Elephant and Castle has become the latest victim of Transport for London and the Mayor’s strict adherence to ‘smoothing the flow’, ensuring the free flow of motor vehicles at the expense of the safety, convenience and comfort of pedestrians and cyclists.

And it's not just London - which has done more than most places to encourage cycling.

Cars are necessary/vital/modern/objects of desirable economic growth/objects of everyone's desires/etc.

Keeping them moving is the most important job of traffic engineers and town planners.

    There is no alternative.

I am surprised they hold up Trafalger Square as being an ideal place for pedestrians. I found it a horrific place to navigate on foot, huge numbers of car clogged junctions to cross. It took ages. I would hate to have to try it by bike.

I don't remember Trafalgar Square being that bad in the evening rush hour when I was en vélo, but Hyde Park Corner was certainly quite exciting. I do remember, on the rare occasions I was on foot, that there seemed to be people everywhere, all the time.
