This usually means 'you say you like this product and we'll give you money'.

Just heard a trailer for "How Dolly Got Rotherham Reading". The on-line blurb includes "In 2007 she took South Yorkshire by surprise when she turned up in Rotherham - not a city used to celebrity visits. But what happened next? Did her library capture the imagination of Rotherham's children? We follow up to ask whether it was just a flash in the pan or a serious project."

I suspect that the answer is that it kickstarted something - rather than a programme that kicks a failure.

Either way is it possible to imagine a town/city-wide cycling initiative highlighted/promoted/enabled by someone with real celebrity/fame?

You mean in a non-Duffy-riding-a-bike-through-a-supermarket type way? I don't see why not.

Potential problem - do you know of such a celebrity?

There was a programme about a woman who tried to get everyone to leave their cars at home for one day in a congested market town in Yorkshire. (maybe same person?)

It worked when the cameras were on....

Afterwards everyone had to drive with a vengeance to make up!

Think the key is NOT finding one.

Thing about the Dolly Parton thing - reading - is that she is genuinely passionate about kids and books due to her own childhood.

It would need someone like Chris Hoy to decide that he really wanted to work on a 'get kids cycling' project (not just for "sport") - he has been the figurehead for various cycling things and he does genuinely want more young people to cycle.

It will be interesting to see where he goes after (probably) 2014. Maybe stay within sport, or something completely different.

Graeme Obree is also an inspiring person. But neither has the personal financial resources to 'just make it happen'.

Yes, Dolly is worth squillions while Chris Hoy and Greame Obree are not footballers...

    "Yeah, SHE was being towed!"

    Really? Meheheh!

The difference is between an activity/skill which everyone agrees is a good thing and one which is widely (although not universally) scorned. Dolly Parton wouldn't be able to get people riding, I wager.

Yes but to be fair he's probably driven everywhere and doesn't get time to ride a bike, choosing horses as the royals seem to do.
