  1. I seem to remember there was debate on here as to whether they would explodify a metal tower in the same way as a brick one. The short answer appears to be 'no'. Spotted sparks coming out form the side of it today about 6-10 feet from the top, looks like someone was inside cutting around - 30 minutes later and a crane had lifted the section away.

I wonder if they're going to work all the way down the tower like that?

Photo is taken through glass and blinds at work, and then taken by my phone of the image on the LCD screen of my camera. So. Er. Not the clearest. (although the post-apocalyptic look maybe suits the shot!)

Will have better following access to Photoshop (and if they're still dismantling at lunchtime when I go along for a look...)

    I love the photo!

But that's an awfully dull and methodical way to bring it down. I wan't a portly northern man in a flatcap with a watch and chain stacking pit-props and tyres under the base of it, setting fire to them, poking around the base muttering "any minute now. eee" then running for his life when it decides not to come down as planned and shouting "D'Y LIKE THAT".

  3. No more sparks since that top bit came off (still annoyed I missed the moment it actually got winched away), so I wonder if they'll explode the rest of it after all? Where's Mr Dibnah!?!

Wonder if the Evening News would want one of the pictures...

They should repeatedly ding a large weight on the top of it until it scrunches up.

  6. I like Wingpig's suggestion - like a giant can crusher. Still no more sparks. Hopefully saving it all up for aboiut 12.30ish to give me some great 'sparks against the gloom' shots.

fantastic photo, love it. Imagine being the guy, or guyess whose job it is to be inside, prob on a scaffold, burning away, in the half dark, doesnt sound like fun ! Big chain, big truck, drive away, quickly, chain cuts through base of chimmney, timber !
Apparently the chain method is still used to cut ships in half, al be it slowly and with a crane !

Maybe it is like the Twits, and they will take it down once small slice a day over a long period of time so that nobody really notices it's going. Until it's gone.

Might be some kind of robot inside.

Helped build a machine for doing that to large pipes, but it had to work 5m below the sea bed...

How can 'we' be taken seriously as 'the cycle lobby' if you post completely unrelated photos!!!

two weeks back I was cycling on the canal at the demoilition site and the wall had been removed from one side of the brewery which allowed view of the entire S&N brewing process, various very large tanks and cauldrons from the top of the building all piped into each other down to ground floor. Alas, no camera.
