Thinking of cycling to Falkirk today on canal path (late start owing to jetlag). Any suggestions for lunch beyond Ratho?

    "Thinking of cycling to Falkirk"

It's further than you 'think' if you follow the contour canal.

    Detour to Jupiter??

How to get there from Ratho

    Other stations are available!

Complete flat can be tedious - no downhills to look forward to!

    So.... how did it go?

I cycled to Morningside and back 3 times today on bike business. Rather have been out of town.

is there an emoticon for a sore bottom? 20 miles on rough terrain probably not the best thing after 3 weeks of bike...

yes, cycled to linlithgow, caught the final moments of the canal fun day (and more importantly the last ice creams) and then train home.

all good except the *##&^#%$!! gates and some yobs on bikes who came out from under a bridge with headphones on and no bells, causing my bike to go over. i lost my cool totally with them. not good for the kids to see.

the gates a total pain - the tandem with panniers does not fit through most of them.

oh, and lift at linlithgow out of order. but the new one at Haymarket very indeed.

    But the tandem fitted train?

Were panniers catching on gates as I find the Helios pretty compact and would have thought it would go through?

Sorry - you're getting a third degree! Our canal path correspondent SRD!

Don't think sore bottom. Think toning!

    Well done.

awww. thanks. :) most of it was really a lovely cycle.

tandem was okay on train. not great, but okay. basically, i put it in first, so there wasn't room for the other bike on the supposed bike carrier. but if the other bike had gone in first, the tandem would have blocked path to route. but it fit into the vestibule, and I was able to move it on and off without too much hassle.

helios fitted through first gate, but none of the rest. don't think taking panniers off would have helped. ended up up-ending it. wish I had a few more inches.... luckily other bike had sleeping baby on it, or we would probably just have turned back.

In answer to the original question (for next time...), the Park Bistro couldn't be handier for the canal.

The lift at L'gow station seems to be quite unreliable and is OOO about once every two weeks or so.

It being broken might have saved you some dissapointment though. It's quite a tight fit for a "normal" bike and would probably choke on a tandem.

The Haymarket lifts are fine (as long as you don't end up on P1 or the Potter-esque P0) but for true bike friendly design you have to visit the Tay Road Bridge.

I'd forgotten about the lift (Dundee end).

Thanks cb - we saw that and Mr SRD (at whose request this thread was posted) said 'no one told us about that one!'. The forum is clearly perceived as 100% reliable (and permanently on-line) . next time we'll try to give you more lead-time :)

"The forum is clearly perceived as 100% reliable"

    But of course.

    "(and permanently on-line)"

I get the impression that quite a few people are using the rss feed to keep up with topics -hence fairly rapid responses.

Other people log on occasionally and post sparingly. (Both methods are legitimate/welcome.)

tandem was okay on train. not great, but okay.

Technically 'they' could have refused entry but as long as the doors weren't blocked. One option is to take off the front seat post and bars so bike fits under the bar thing they have. Then put post back in roughly to lock bike in position. With QR it doesn't take long.

Maybe that wasn't problem? I've taken it with no problem on Glasgow - Edinburgh trains on the longer space (beside toilet with curved door).

LB - yes we were in that same space. okay on its own (as long as no wheelchair), but slightly less ideal with second bike, kids, childseat etc. But it was fine.

ref to vestibule was just that it rolled in/out/around the corner fine with minimal hassle to other passengers.

Alibali - had to upend tandem at lift at Haymarket, but quite easy, and it sat nicely on panniers. Just wish I were taller and it would be a doddle.

LB - yes, that was the space were in. It was okay, but with two bikes, and childseat on one, not much room. When I mentioned vestibule, I meant that I was able to get the bike in/out the door without difficulty.

Probably easier if not in a rush, and with two kids :)
