For the next cc 'on the cheap' piece. I've got a couple of cheap as chips bike locks in increasing thickness. Oh, and does anyone have an old 'good' cable lock they don't want anymore? Just for comparison to the cheapies... I'm sure I did but I can't find the damned thing...

Yes.
I prefer angle grinding!

Ah yes, but the average bike thief is probably more likely to be carrying bolt cutters!

I've an EBC D-lock I got free for submitting a photo for the catalogue that you're welcome to hack to pieces if you so desire.

I'll have it!
I have a broken (lock bit) if Anth wants to scale up his testing.

Done.
I probably still have the keys and everything!

Cool, just trying to work out if I have a lunchtime free this week!

Here's a tip for if (when) you lose your keys for a cheap D-lock. Use a hammer.
A friend of mine gave me an old kid's MTB but it was locked to itself and he had lost the keys. We got out his tool kit, and I was about to start sawing with a hacksaw when I thought I'd bash it a bit with a hammer first. Three (yes just 3) blows from a medium weight hammer on the protruding lock barrel (the straight bit of the D) and pop went the lock. 30 seconds work. I was shocked how easy it was to get an apparently sturdy looking lock off the bike, without damaging the bike nor indeed the lock.
Buy a decent lock for your bike folks!

Might be fun to try freezing the lock before hitting with the hammer.

Yet to find a bike lock my Dremel's cutting disk can't get through in under 30 seconds. Most locks are nearer 3 seconds. Of course, it needs mains power, but I do wonder if the rechargable Dremels cut as fast.

I wouldn't want to waste the £70 a Kryptonite Fuggedaboudit costs to try and see!

You planning some lunch time destruction... Need a hand! ;)
I have a cordless Dremel and don't mind cutting through the remains of any locks but I doubt it'll be as quick as a bigger rotary tool.

Sadly I forgot to take the locks with me!

We use Abloy 340 hardened padlocks at work and I can confirm that two big blokes swinging on a good 5 foot set of bolt cutters managed to destroy the jaws of the bolt cutters and barely dent the surface on the padlock!
Dunno how they'd cope with a cutting disc mind you, or what a similar chain would weigh! :-oTo my mind, a lock is a deterrent to casual theft, anything that needs a (noisy) cutting disc you are unlikely to beat by strength alone and therefore is an effective detterent to many thieves.
One has to look at the value of the bike, the risk of theft (location/desireability/proximity of more vulnerable bikes/predictability of it being there etc etc) and choose security levels accordingly.Any lock can ultimately be broken, it's merely a question of how much time/noise/effort is justified/acceptable to the person breaking it.

Couldn't find an underground car park for the hand-over.
We put our hoodies up to hide from the CCTV.
Didn't notice the bugged buggy.

I hope there was an appropriate exchange of passwords;

Is Riego Street not ill-lit or be-pillarèd enough for shady exchanges?
I hope Anth had his hat on.
Wonder if the filmic portrayal of bootleggers and gangsters as always wearing suits and hats did for the suit and the hat what the populist media is currently doing for the hooded top?
