@geordiefatbloke Probably reported as 'car stops for rest on traffic island'.

Bad things (driving) comes in threes:

Last night, the lady checking facebook on her mobile whilst driving, albeit slowly in the heavy traffic along Melville Drive at the West of the Meadows. She almost dropped her phone when I beeped her. She then indicated left as I was alongside her to turn into Tarvit street and I wasn't entirely sure whether she was going to let me go first or bully her way past.

Then another lady on Tarvit street who suddenly decided to move from being stationary in the left hand lane of queuing traffic, into the right hand lane without looking or indicating. If I was half a second later she would have got me.

Finally the chap turning left from Gilmore Street onto Home Street, when the lights had long changed to red (unless the Gilmore Street lights stay green for much longer than the ones for the traffic turning right from Tarvit Street).

"(unless the Gilmore Street lights stay green for much longer than the ones for the traffic turning right from Tarvit Street)"
In the past on here there's been some discussion that it is the other way round (i.e. the Gilmore Place lights go red before the Tarvit Street ones do).

The driver who veered right from the centre lane when he saw a parking space --- without checking for my existence over his right shoulder. His window was wound down so he heard me loud and clear after that.

(Wellington Street, Glasgow, ~1840 last night)

*SWEARING* Left Hook last night. Very apologetic but being hit makes me angry. Sorry.

An hour ago, on the Leith Walk/London Road roundabout. I was on the roundabout, about to continue onto London Road. I noticed two white vans waiting to go south towards Leith Street. One of them had enough time to go before me, the other was obviously being driven by a complete idiot who didn't even think to look if something was coming. That his view was momentarily blocked by the first van is no excuse.

My apologies to the pedestrians in the area that may have heard my very loud swearing at almost being hit full on.

The taxi driver who started performing a turn in the road on Gilmore Place this evening despite the fact that I was clearly approaching from behind. As he finished reversing back towards me and was up against the curb at 90 degrees to the flow of traffic I took the opportunity to overtake past the front of the vehicle - he took exception to this and hooted at me. I responded to this with a hand gesture and he responded with an abusive shout as I cycled away...

*note to self* Don't ever learn to drive, then forget how to drive, then drive into Condor2378.

I must admit, I did at one point think 'She gets it, you can cool the jets' but I am acutely aware that I'm sitting 30 feet above car level, watching a 3x2" YouTube of it and not flooded with noradrenaline.

If I am calmer in your circumstances, then I'll get snooty about, but in the meantime I think we can all be glad there is one driver who is going to check the holy hamhocks out of their left mirror before hooking, so...yeah, I think you're golden.

    Thanks Uberuce.

The camera doesn't catch the bit as I'm moving off where she says "You should have. ..." which is when I go back and say(shout) "I should have what?" but I think she realised that I had on a helmet/hi viz/several lights/was over to the left so she apologised again after going down that dead end. If she'd said anything like that I'm sure I'd have turned into the Hulk or something.

Tl;Dr Contact with cars makes me gggrrrrrrrrr.

I thought you were quite restrained, considering.

If she'd looked at all she'd have seen you. A clear case of 'brain sees gap in another lane and goes for it'. She's simply lucky you weren't a bus.

I confess that as a driver it can be very hard to distinguish bike lights, especially when there is water on mirrors, windscreens etc. It makes everything all sparkly, and with cars also having bright sparkly lights, discriminating between what is a narrow and fast-moving bike and what is a car that is just glistening at me, is difficult. If there is another car just behind you dazzling you too it makes it very hard (to avoid being blinded you dip your internal mirror which reduces what you can see, and your side mirrors might not be set up to perfectly catch the left-filtering bikes - they do have blind spots!)

This is no defence for bad driving and not shoulder-checking of course, but just to say that even the best-lit cyclist can actually blend in with the background on a dark, wet night.

    /me shakes his head

Did the driver blame the sun in his eyes? I'm glad I saw that just now rather than an hour ago, as I have just turned right at that junction... thankfully the car nudging out did stop for me.

    Posted 10 years ago #
  16. There was actually no reason other than "I didn't see you". Unfortunately the camera hadn't fired up after I switched it on at the previous junction, so missed a good long while with me sitting directly in front of him waiting to turn!

Just got a reply from the Head of H&S at Historic Scotland after my run-in with one of their Fiats. Turns out both he and the Chief Exec are cyclists.

Offending driver identified and subject to ongoing support to improve his roadcraft as he is inexperienced.

I'm happy with that. One more drivist on his toes for the winter.

Got a positive response from CityLink from their coach driver's close pass and indifferent attitude when approached.

[+] Embed the video | Video DownloadGet the Video Widget

    Their response:

Having watched the video clip you have provided, it is clear that the driver has not left enough room for overtaking you. Please accept my apologies for the driver’s actions and, from the information you have provided, we have traced the driver concerned and will be speaking to him regarding this as a matter of urgency.

We have completed a great deal of work recently in highlighting good driving behaviour. This includes the need to consider other road users, particularly cyclists, and it is disappointing that on this occasion, the driver has failed to put this in to practice. I give you my assurances that the appropriate remedial action will be taken with this driver.

So if you've got a bad experience with them it seems an email to Complaints@citylink.co.uk can be quite fruitful.

    "I'm happy with that"

And glad you took the time to report it.

Always good when companies/orgs take things seriously.

    Every little helps...

Changeworks Recycling Luton Van turned from Teviot Place onto Forrest Road merging just behind me coming from the Meadows. Swung very fast over to the left and almost brushed against me forcing me to pull over to the side and brake almost to a stop. This was pretty aggressive - I get the impression it was intended to demonstrate to me where I should be. I also wonder sometimes whether it's clear that the phase from the Meadows and Teviot Place are synced.

    Basically no.

    REAL problem with that junction.

Few nights ago now (and in Stirling), but one of the most dangerous overtakes I've had in a while. Idiot didn't even save any time, since I overtook him a short while further on.

@algo I Clarenced this junction back on 12 March as I regularly have an issue with the traffic coming from Teviot Place changing lanes to the left without indicating or checking. I can't see how the Council thinks it is not ok for the traffic from Lauriston Place to merge with that from Teviot Place but that it is perfectly fine for vulnerable road users to do so.

I have just followed up on my previous email...

@davidsondave - thanks for this - perhaps I should also Clarence it. Would you propose an entirely separate light phase?

I got an excellent reply from Changeworks Recycling:

    ===

Thanks for your email and apologies that you felt the need to email us about your experience this morning.

We take all reports of bad driving very seriously, all our drivers are regularly assed each month for their driving skills so this type of incident should not have happened? Did you happen to get the registration of the vehicle? if not no problem we can trace the vehicle from our vehicle tracking device.

We shall now bring this matter to the attention of the drivers supervisor and the staff member shall be dealt with appropriately.

Thank you so much for bringing this matter to our attention and as a cyclist myself please accept our apologies.

Presume you pointed out the inadequacy of that junction in your original email?

In view of "as a cyclist myself", perhaps you could ask them to point out to CEC (as a company that uses vehicles in the city) the inadequacies of this road layout/signal sequence.

Not as a way of excusing driver(s) of course!)

@chdot - I did indeed, and also again in the follow-up…. I didn't suggest that they pointed it out to CEC, but I could do that and will do if I get a reply.

The driver who did the classic look-left-while-turning-right manoeuvre this morning, exiting a side road. I stopped dead in the middle of the road but there was a fraction of a second when I wondered if I was going to perform something more drastic to avoid sprawling across the bonnet.
