It is very clear on the video. (SP10 CVJ)I'll post a link when its uploaded.

What is the best contact to report such incidents?

@richardlmpearson: Talk as soon as possible to the nearest police station to the incident. You can't report traffic incidents over the phone so don't try: your time will be wasted and they'll eventually tell you to report it at the station.

I've never been able to provide video evidence so not sure what is the best way to supply that. Youtube URL? Others will no doubt advise. This should probably be an FAQ of some kind.

@richardlmpearson to supply video evidence to police you need to give them a CD/DVD of it - they won't take USB dongles and not sure about YouTube being classed as evidence.
Back in the stone age, that lot!
Do go into a police station to report, preferably with the disc.

@richardimpearson - I'd add (to useful advice from dougal and twq) that I found PC Grant Palmer (number 11344) at St Leonard's very sympathetic. He even told me that video evidence was equivalent to a witness account.

I hope that this driver is more responsible in future.

    Dear Sir and Madam

I am reporting a serious traffic violation by the driver of a vehicle bearing your company insignia, Apex Hotels.

The vehicle in question is a truck with the registration number SP63 CAO on the top left of the vehicle.

My partner and I were cycling west by the Water of Leith Visitor Centre on Lanark Road, between Craiglockart Avenue and Inglis Green road, on 7/.2/15 at 13:30. The vehicle in question was driving very closely behind us which was quite intimidating.

Cyclists need a lot more room than this driver was giving us, as even small surface irregularities can cause a deviation from the intended course. Cyclists are also much more vulnerable to side-winds, especially those caused by high-sided vehicles.

At the traffic lights at Inglis Green Road, I pulled alongside the vehicle and the driver was speaking on his mobile telephone. He gestured with his free hand as he pulled away.

I would be interested to hear what comments you have about this before I report the matter to the Police.

    Regards
    Colin

    Dear Colin,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention and I appreciate you informing us of this.

Using the detailed information you have provided below we will now investigate this further following our company investigation process and discuss with the driver who was working at the time.

Again thank you for sending this to me

    Regards
    Danielle

Danielle Ramsay | Group Recruitment Manager

    Dear Danielle Ramsay

Thank you for your letter of 10 Feb 2015 concerning the traffic violation by the driver of one of your vehicles.

Please can you confirm if the driver has been traced? If so, can you tell me what his response was, and whether any action will be taken against him.

    Many thanks for your co-operation.

    Regards

    Colin

    Hi Colin,

Thank you for getting in touch and enquiring about the status of our investigation. We have carried out an investigation and have taken appropriate action against the driver concerned.

    Regards
    Danielle

    Cheers
    Colin

Yesterday. Cycling down Morrison Street in cycle lane. Van passes inches away on my left, shouting at me. Then he turns left into Dalry Road while I keep straight on. He does a U turn in Dalry Road and then turns left into Haymarket Terrace (something we have discussed in depth on this very site!). Impatient chap.

Rosie: I don't use that cycle lane as I don't think it helps to be wedged between two lanes of moving traffic like that. It's a really poor cycle lane bit of paint and it would be better for it to be removed. I take a strong primary and make the cars wait behind.

Stickman: You're right, no doubt. It's psychological. 3 fairly fast moving lines of traffic is something that really daunts me and the red cycle lane seems to be "my" space (with its carefully placed man-hole cover/pot-hole dead centre).

  10. If you are heading straight on to HT, I'd advocate being primary in the outside lane.

The first set of tramlines is tricky, but only as you need to also control the traffic behind. I find a stare and a traffic police style halt signal works a treat.

The second sety of rails are then relatively easy and can be taken at cruising speed.

You do have to be aware of naughty mororists undertaking you and trying to nick your lane after your wee shimmy crossing the first pair, so back into primary asap.

I've probably made it sound trickier than it is. Confidence really is the big requirement here.

    ****!!!!!!!!

That is even worse than I had imagined. It is a nice touch that every other driver manages to use the other lane.

Good luck Richard, I think that might be the closest pass I've ever seen on Video. A real heart in mouth moment.

I hope the police catch up with this gentleman and ensure that he is aware that he's at risk of having to carry his ladder to work.

@richardmlpear Please report him to get that idiot off the roads before he kills someone.

On another note @BikeabilityEdinburgh, can you check your PM's please?

@SRD hmm, it sounds like the 'rubbish driving' cyclist may have been inspired by this motorcyclist, whose videos were doing the rounds on the internet recently... Risky! (opps, sorry for CNN commentary)

@SRD I had to look that up, but it appears so. In the Daily Mail article that came up from Googling it says "After the incident, Balding wrote: ‘I was in the car behind & thought ‘what the hell is she doing?’ Then thought “That’s my girl”.’" so a bit more rubbish driving... They should car-share!

This thread is now about rubbish rubbish driving.

The motorcyclist in NY has staged those I hope. Replicating it on a bike in West Dunbartonshire is as the cyclist says himself - risking his life.

Any vigilante action needs to have a very clear exit strategy which neither the motorbike nor bike had.

I once saw a man on the glasgow underground time something to the split second that would have gone terribly wrong had it not been so well timed. He knocked two skinhead's bonces together (they were the facist type skinheads, heading on from Hillhead in the Partick direction). Vigilante was able to get off the train as the doors shut whilst the skinheads were still dazed and confused. I would never have the sang froid for this type of independent intavenshun

Taxi driver who sailed through a red light at ped crossing on the approach to Drum Brae roundabout by the drive through McDs, nearly killing me in the process.

He was in the left hand land on opposite side of road, so his would have been the fourth lane of carriageway had I been on it so not like we're talking about an amber gamble gone wrong. He either didn't know or didn't care that there was red light, neither of which are reassuring.

And I'm obviously not cut out for the internet generation - by the time I had managed to navigate to the camera app on my phone he and the two cars in front of him crossed the roundabout and gone speeding off to (I assume) the next red light.

From a distance, I saw a car setting off the wrong way around Arthur's Seat from the roundabout opposite the south end of the crags. They probably took a cue from another car that was parked the wrong way on that road.

Yesterday seemed to be the day for it. Had a stupidly close pass on the trailer around midday by a Kuritol van - it was quite deliberate as they slowed down waiting for a chance to retaliate to my remonstrations (which were not forthcoming - I've learnt my lesson there).

Last night going eastbound along Meliville Drive I moved into the right hand filter lane to turn right into Marchmont Road; the pedestrian lights going to Jawbone walk were on green, so the traffic turning right from Marchmont Road wanted to take its chance to cross over. First a police car pulled out without looking, shortly followed by some sort of 53-plate Renault thing into which I couldn't help but collide. No damage done to me or the bike - the bumper of car seemed already quite battle-weary, but astonishingly no-one stopped as I peeled myself in disbelief off the floor (artistic license there - it was remarkably undramatic).

Erb. People pulling right out of side roads into which you're turning right is not pleasant. Even the car with which the collision was experienced didn't stop?
