@riffian: the attendant has to report that to the police. Should be fairly easy to track them down if their kid is at that school and if the details were being recorded for a ticket.

Saw similar to that in stockbridge and immediately gave my name as a witness. I was later interviewed by the police who told me the driver had said he didn't see the attendent. I recall laughing at that and just told the police he was an absolute liar.

B****y hell Riffian. That's awful.

Rear ended by BMW Mini SG60 AAJ at the junction at the bottom of Yeaman Place this morning. Totally inexplicable as I had just passed her a few seconds before and we were both about to enter Dundee St. No apparent damage done and I stayed upright. I asked her how she didn't see me and she said she thought she had more space. Can't really understand it as we were both going in the same direction. The suspicious part of me suspects she was distracted perhaps by a communication device, but I didn't see it in her hand. I had my daughter in the bike seat 5 mins previously, so could have been worse.

Yes, it was pretty shocking. I and a few other parents gave contact details to the parking attendent. He'd radioed into his office. I hope he persues it with the police.

Seem to be a lot more mobile device users recently. I spotted 2 yesterday and 1 today and my commute is very short / mostly off road.

You should see the cyclists in Amsterdam; 1 in 4 texting as they cycle.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I'm just back from Amsterdam. There's a fair amount of less than attentive cycling, but they can afford to. It's safer, they're generally not sharing car space and are very attentive when sharing space with pedestrians. Although I would point out that 1/4 texting while cycling is a ridiculous ott exaggeration.
The near-continent drivers are very good re vulnerable cyclists.

The problem here is deplorable brit/UK attitudes across all groups.Posted 9 years ago # -
@basecut - glad you're ok. I'd be rather perplexed if someone touched me with their car. A taxi attempted this on arthurs seat laps today but a deft avoidance tactic from me saved the day.

Looks like they couldn't identify the vehicle?

One website's "ploughed into parking warden" is another's "driven at parking warden".
EEN hyperbole, meet BBC understatement.

The driver who didn't bother to stop at the give way line and just pulled out of Leamington Road and turned right on to Lower Gilmore Place as a cyclist (not me) approached on the road with the right of way. I have also experienced being cut across like this by vehicles on occasion in the morning, although there has been a spate of cyclists not giving way and continuing straight over the lifting bridge recently to mix things up, which has nearly resulted in me cycling into the side or back of them on a few occasions.

Green Volkswagen Golf SP51 ??? with four men inside, driving fast and aggressively along St John's Road towards town. Firstly tried to overtake a bus but oncoming cars stopped them. I think the bus driver quite rightly positioned himself to stop them trying the same move again. Eventually they weaved past and then started honking and shouting at a motorcyclist to get out of the way. I last saw them speeding off at I would guess approaching 50mph
If you see this car stay well out of its way.

Metallic blue hatchback veers towards me and fellow rider as we ride the country lanes above Linlithgow. Most blatant punishment pass ever. Got no ID apart from that.
Posted 9 years ago # -
@jdanielp - i'm confused - where was the original cyclist going?
Posted 9 years ago # -
@SRD the cyclist was heading West on Lower Gilmore Place, presumably about to turn right onto the lifting bridge. The driver was turning right from Leamington Road so was pulling out straight into the path of the cyclist. As it turns out (see the rubbish cycling thread), the give way line is all but non-existant these days, not that I would say that that excuses the driver for not looking anyway.

Eurch. Much stupidity on the way home, starting with the EMHorsburgh mini-coach being speeds limits exceedingly impatient along Cluny Gardens and ending with three or four punishment passes and a near-left-hook on Portobello Road.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Eurch indeed. Saw a coach turn left into Hope Park Terrace from the middle (straight on) lane at the end of Buccleuch street. Thankfully no bikes were in the bike lane or left lane but it was scary to see. Motorbike then pulled up next to me in the ASL at the end of Marchmont road and overtook me very fast and aggressively on the turn into Grange Road so close that he brushed against me. I didn't *quite* catch him at the Causewayside lights - probably just as well....

@Darkerside:
What was the fallout of that incident? Did she stop?
Posted 9 years ago # -
There wasn't actually contact (the noise is me clattering through a pothole). But no, she didn't appear to notice quite how close we ended up.
Neither did I until I checked the video, to be honest!

I get the impression that one was incompetence rather than malice. An observation failure sufficient for a driving test fail, certainly. If you'd been on a motorbike, could you have stopped/slalomed?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Definitely "just" incompetence, she didn't look particularly alert...
I have no motorbike experience (I'm watching Long Way Round at the moment, but I doubt that counts), so I'll defer to others of this parish to give opinions! I'd be amazed if a motorbike could pull off the slalom.

@darksider nice skills to avoid that manoeuvre! It's probably one of those situations that an experienced rider doesn't really get phased by as you are used to scanning that far ahead and anticipating the car just pulling out but one that would have seen another cyclist catapulted over the car. Another reminder that I need to check my brake pads

Had about 4 close passes/ unsafe lane changes between Haymarket and Bread St (via Torphicen and Morrison Streets) on the way to work this morning, with the worst being an MGIF from a blue Transit van in Bread St. Felt a bit jumpy by the time I made it into the office - not one of the better journeys in. People are just too complacent in cars and just don't watch where they are going (I suspect I'm as bad when I drive too).

@NiallA - Yeh it does get a bit hairy there some mornings; more so when there appears to be a back-log or back up (i'm presuming from a couple of tram passes or something). Sometimes they (drivers) queue in two lanes along Torphicen st when actually most of them want to go left and are jostling for position. you really have to have your wits about you.

saw a BMW driver yesterday evening straddling the Tram lines (in a queue) at Haymarket. He was oblivious that he was holding up the tram (and everyone else at haymarket) as the lights were all on Red until the Tram could clear the junction. Sat there for about 4-5 mins I think. if he'd positioned or moved his car a bit better the Tram would have sailed through and the traffic would have got flowing again. I really thought that we'd hit a stalemate and be stuck there for evermore haha
Posted 9 years ago # -
Beano: that must happen several times a day, despite the yellow boxes. Some drivers are completely oblivious.
