CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Might be OV61 FKR, a silver Seat hatchback?
(slow morning at work, like a puzzle)
edit: OV07 FKR, the Merc mentioned earlier seems like a better bet, it is silver and I think there is an estate version of that car.
edit edit: this thread is moving faster than I can type, sorry.

Edinburgh's Lord (or Lady) provost's official car has the registration S0, as it was one of the first cars registered in Edinburgh which originally issued plates with the letter S (then various combinations such as FS, SF, SC, SG, SX etc. Midlothian was SY and their provost originally had SY0. Letih issued WS plates up until 1920 when it was colonised by Edinburgh. Bristol took over WS in 1974. Individual towns and burghs have long since ceased issuing their own plates.
Lanarkshire was VD.
"Won't surprise you to hear it was a middle aged bloke in a suit"...as a suit wearing middle aged bloke I'm struggling to see the relevance to the story?
sorry deckard112. written in anger and while still feeling vulnerable from this bully-boy who clearly thought that his car entitled him to scare the *** out of me.
I'm sure there are many middle aged, suit wearing, mercedes-sedan driving blokes who do not behave in such obnoxious ways.
(and yeah, i should have said saloon not estate - i was clearly more shook up than i thought)
That's a rubbish start to the day, SRD. Did 'HelmetCamMom' capture anything?
I had a strange encounter with a motorist this morning, and descent of the red mist that I really would've been better to ignore. Turning left out of Craiglockhart Ave I accelerated then spotted the red lights at the ped crossing beside the Blue Goose, so I coasted towards them. One car a short distance in front, but the impatient driver behind me decided to undertake using the bus lane to get in front of me! Perhaps he didn't spot the red light as quickly as I did. Just as I started fuming slightly, the amber light came on and I ducked left into the bus lane, accelerated and undertook the car driver, and slotted back in to take the green light and turn right into Inglis Green. The trailing car driver didn't attempt to overtake all the way to the Calder Road, possibly because I was hauling right along, but I should've set a better example as well (so ought to post this in the rubbish cycling thread too).
This loon forced their way past me, close enough to touch, and straight into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist who had to swerve hard left to avoid being barged off the road.
Out of my way! I'm a car!
(Click image to see it properly. Not quite got the hang of sizing these right.)
Turning right onto Bristo Place from Forrest Road earlier, I spotted a van parked in the left-hand cycle lane so stayed in primary prior to turning left onto Lothian Street... Cue an impatient motorist who undertook me at speed only to pull out to negotiate said van and corner.
was from ...a Lothian bus driver.... sigh.
Dear Lothian bus:
I would appreciate you checking the external cameras on bus number 423, service 25, yesterday evening at approximately 5.20-5.25.
I was cycling west bound along Princes street and passed a stationary lothian bus. As I passed it, the number 25 overtook me at speed along the tram tracked side of the road. The bus then pulled in to a stop and sat there for at least 5, possibly 10 minutes.
The overtake was much too close owing to the width of the road, with well less than the recommended distance between me and the moving bus. It also seems to contradict the training that your drivers have been given concerning overtakes of cyclists before pulling into stops. Given that the driver was apparently in no hurry to go anywhere, this close and unnecessary pass was particularly egregious and well below the standards that we normally expect of your drivers, which is why I am contacting you.
This from Saturday, but just falls into the "why oh why" category. And typically because I was riding the short distance from the fishmonger to the supermarket in question I hadn't put the camera on...
Heading from Welch's to the Newhaven Asda. Decide to ride round to the car park (because I couldn't be bothered parking up at the 'opposite' end where the bike racks are) and just before a 90 degree bend, with a pedestrian island in the middle, muppet in a silver Vectra decides to overtake. Of course being a 90 degree bend I'm actually quicker than her round the corner, so being cut off just before the turn means I have to brake, then there's another 90 degree bend, then the car park, so no speed difference. She takes a different route through the car park, but because she's looking for a space and I'm just heading to the building, I get to the top before her. Just shrug, and as she has the window open say, "Well done."
Saved, quite literally, about half a second in time...
Must. Get. Past.
Dear Lothian Buses,
Could you please retrieve and review the camera footage from vehicle 160 (SN57 ODF), the single-decker vehicle performing the #12 service at 18:50 on Sunday 5th June 2015?
At about 18:50 the vehicle turns right out of Constitution Street to head along Queen Charlotte Street, Links Place and Links Gardens.
Firstly, please check whether or not the driver drove across the second stop line out of Consitution St before or after the light had turned red. Secondly, please check if the distance maintained from the cyclist in front (who turned left down Links Gardens Lane) is what might be termed "dangerously close" and thirdly, please verify the speed at which the driver then drove along Gladstone Place and Claremont Park, only to then have to wait at the red light at the end of Seafield Place.
The cycle facilities in Leith Links/Claremont Park have recently been improved, resulting in a new raised-table speed-bump structure being built across Links Gardens to link a new spur of the cycle path with the opposite footway, which will become shared-use for pedestrians and cyclists. This may result in higher frequencies of cyclists using this bit of road. Driving a heavy bus at the edges of the raised-table speed-bump at speed is very likely to damage it - please ensure your drivers are therefore aware of this facility so that they may modify their behaviour appropriately. This particular driver also needs to be apprised of the need to keep a safe distance behind cyclists, even those travelling quite quickly, especially through an area thick with pinch-points, parked cars and turns-off.
In the end, I reached Seafield Street well in advance of the bus, which then waited for at least a minute at the southbound stop before turning in the Fleming Place turning circle, further underlining the complete lack of necessity for the driver to have been so impatient.

Unless you got that within (say) 24 hours - and a follow up after they had looked at video, that's not really good enough.
They seem to have changed 'dealing with complaints' process.
Previously much more open/informative.
(It's happened to me too.)
I reported the incident within an hour of it happening. Only got the reply this morning.
Overtaken by a modern style mini (sorry WC!) on Arthurs seat VERY close at the steepest part of the hill. About 2 inches from my foot and had to swerve into the side of the road.
Caught them at the other side of the seat where they were having their lunch and had a wee chat (very calmly and.... sweatily) about why they shouoldn/'t ever pass on that bit and also why they should give people plenty of space. She seemed genuinely sorry and had no idea that it was too close. Well fingers crossed she remembers!

Thanks, I'm afraid that doesn't surprise me. By then they will have seen the videos OR not got round to it before it was recorded over??
anyone agree with me that being the jam in a lothian bus sandwich on Princes street merits reporting? wasn't on the narrowest bit, but close enough for me to touch both buses if I'd wanted to....
Yes
Unless of course you put yourself there...
But YOU wouldn't...

Overtaken by three motorists far exceeding the 30mph limit on Silverknowes Road towards Marine Drive this morning, the third of whom was driving his Black BMW hands-free as he had both of them on his mobile phone as he passed me and my daughter.
I'm assuming that this is going to involve some rubbish driving, but does anyone have information about a road closure due to an 'incident' around the King's Theatre?

I shall be cycling in that direction relatively soon...
Nothing obvious when I passed by just after 6pm.
Just to make you all feel a bit better about Lothian, the best I can get out of First in Glasgow is the same boilerplate letter around a month after reporting the incident. I have a sample of four data points now...
If you're after a digger, don't use these impatient chumps:
Was in Canada - riding the Bow Valley Parkway on a fully laden touring bike and moved out a bit to avoid some cracks in what I think is termed the pavement over here. As I pulled back in a red truck/SUV thing zoomed past, young male passenger shouting aggressively and then giving me the finger. Doubly annoying given the Parkway only exists to allow slow speed scenery gazing -if red truck was in such a rush, he should have used the parallel highway (on which it is also legal - thought often disconcerting - to ride).
the best I can get out of First in Glasgow is the same boilerplate letter
Take heart, although not from First, my most recent complaint resulted in a final warning for the driver, and one in the past, "as a result of this and other incidents, the driver no longer works for our company".
Should I start stenciling on the top tube? Perhaps ø (crossed out steering wheel) or similar?
Robert
"Should I start stenciling on the top tube? Perhaps ø (crossed out steering wheel) or similar?"
NO
Not least because you have no reason to believe that they are not driving for someone else...
