@paddyirish - when they started developing that site I did expect issues close to the entrance but up until now have been largely pleased with the way most traffic I encounter behaves. As I said in my email, it's a very wide road and quiet so plenty of room for all. It appears this 'individual' was upset at having to slow past the island. Usual story of the driver delaying himself far longer than the actual delay that got him upset in the first place. All to rush another hundred yards down the road.

    Thanks all for commentary.
I completely agree in retrospect that using the right lane on this approach is the best way to ensure that this can't happen.
I am however 90% sure the driver knew I was going right because yards before entering the roundabout I had flicked a brief hand signal and did a shoulder check to ensure they weren't actually edging past me. It wasn't enough of a shoulder check to make eye contact but it would have been hard to miss.
She was accelerating hard as soon as she entered the roundabout behind me. She had loads of time to ease off, or heavens forbid, brake, if my direction had genuinely caught her out. I was traversing the roundabout for a full 5 seconds.
For my money it's either a deliberate punishment pass or a SMIDGAF.

  3. Ah, now the signal obviously doesn't get caught on camera and changes things a bit.

Tonight's muppet (checking video to see if I've got the number plate). Some may say it was only a a pigeon, but the driver of the Edinburgh Council liveried Vauxhall Astra Estate may not have hit it if she'd been travelling at the 20mph limit, not overtaking me while I did 20, while holding her mobile in her hand on the steering wheel (that does not count as hands free).

Another driver who has problems turning right from Roseburn Street onto West Coates.

This time a dark blue transit van belonging to SG Joinery (will check the camera later for the number plate).

I turned right with him behind me. He appeared to be trying to undertake me, so I held my left arm out to hold him back. When he did overtake he then drove right next to me for 100 yards or more, shouting angrily at me (hint for the idiot: I can't hear you if the window is closed). I ignored him, only glancing over to make sure he wasn't going to cut across me.

Another local firm I'll be telling everyone to avoid.

    @deckard112

Scotstoun Avenue has always been a muppet magnet for precisely the same reasons that it should be safe for all.

After finding myself enraged once too often, I quit using that road entirely, about three years ago.

The cut through into Dalmeny village is crap anyway

So, @bax, do you go past Dalmeny Station and up the hill to Dalmeny that way or head out the B800 and take a left?

That's a different van - will check the camera again tonight to make sure I've got the name right.

Station Road then up the hill, yeah

B800 now and then for a bit of variety

@bax Sorry to hear that, I have to admit I've never had an issue on Scotstoun. I usually use the Station Road route coming home to Dunf (coz I get to go 'wheeee' down the hill) but having tried it the other way I prefer the cut through. The road quality on the climb up to Dalmeny is shocking.

Got a prompt reply from Barratt saying they have passed my email to the site contracts manager who will contact me directly, but that they will also discuss my issues at the Considerate Constructors meeting on the site next month.

  13. Idiot who passed me so close and gave me such a fright on Ferry Road this morning around 6.10 that I let slip an extremely loud, expletive-heavy yell and quite startled a nearby pedestrian.

Hadn't expected it at all - heard traffic coming up behind, looked over my shoulder to check and the first car (maybe two cars) passed me with lots of room to spare. Next thing I knew a white car skimmed by my elbow, almost making me jump out of my skin with fright. Cars following him (or her) passed in an exemplary fashion.

If I was being pessimistic I'd say it was done deliberately.

Will check the footage tonight to see just how close it was.

A couple having an animated conversation in their car while travelling along Leith Street and the driver totally failed to see me while changing lanes. The first I knew of their presence was the left-side indicator hoving into view near my feet. I was right-of-centre in my lane and started moving left but this didn't actually help... the driver was just followed me... for the first time ever I rapped on the passenger-side window to get a driver's attention. The passenger looked about ready to murder my for having the audacity to interrupt their conversation. The driver just looked perplexed.

I hate Leith Street. To be honest I'm quite sure I hate my whole commute. There's barely a stretch of it that is comfortable and safe. Most of it is neither.

Chap on his phone yesterday who overtook me heading down Fountainbridge towards the bottom of viewforth and the cinema.

There was loads of space behind me so I overtook a chap on a mountain bike in front of me. suddenly the guy was right next to me about a few CM's away having caught up and decided that one handed overtaking was a good plan. I think he might have actually completely failed to see me if I'm honest. I tried to catch him up and saw him throw his phone across onto passenger side. This is when a camera would be nice but I don't really want to have to have one just to go out for a 3 hour sunday road ride!

Lothian Bus (703) SN55 BJZ. on Dalry Road this morning at about 0810. Heading east on Dalry Road. Regardless of just coming from behind me, seemed to forget I was there and moved right across the front of me on to the advisory cycle lane and squeezed me to the kerb to get into his bus stop. I have on video and will post later.

Holland & Barrett lorry BF11 ZBW aggressively tailgating me this morning on the way down Dalkeith Road. I was going at the same speed as the bus in front of me, and there was a cyclist in the lane to the left of me. Lorry was surging towards me, pretty damn close, and beeping his horn.

I managed to get a photo of his licence plate when stopped at the next set of lights.

Photo attached. Was going at same speed as bus in front of me and lane to left was not free. Unnecessary behaviour IMO (and not in keeping with Highway Code). Appreciate you taking it on board. Thanks.

The driver of a van (belonging to "Express Heating") that slowly passed by my office window on the (supposedly) pedestrian/cycle path "The Walk" at Heriot-Watt, revving the engine loudly to try and scare a woman walking ahead of the van into moving out of his way, but she did a pretty good job of ignoring it completely.

The driver that squeezed their car past the cyclist outside the parliament. I was coming from the other direction (in my own car) and was shocked at how little room the driver left. He didn't even come close to crossing the white divider line!

Possibly also counts as rubbish parking or littering, but presumably some driving was involved at some point:

It was being guarded by two polices in a police car, parked on one of the few paths around that end of the Links not restricted by the expansive Mela fencing.

I've been cycling my SO to work on my way in, while she figures out the route and gets used to cycling on roads.
The very first car to pass on Monday passed way too close. Not a good start. This morning, a car pulling out of a side street didn't really stop as we passed.
I totally understand why people may try cycling for a bit, then abandon the idea.

A few years ago I had a couple (with matching his and hers bikes that I assume they got on the bike scheme) who would arrive at work at the same time as me. As they locked their bikes up they would be discussing all the near misses they had on their way there. They lasted about a fortnight which I think showed remarkable resilience.

The driver of the circa 15 year old BMW who squeezed past me heading east along Bankhead drive. utterly pointless as I was indicating that i would be leaving the road to join the cycle path up ahead. He passed through the lights on Broomhouse Rd (?) as I was arriving there so had gained naff all as a result.

Also the idiot who came out of the Roseburn Maltings development while looking to his left all the way as he rolled over the stop line, into the road then only noticed me sitting in the middle of the lane (decided it was safer to simply stop than go round the front, obvs) when he turned his head and completed the right turn onto Russell Road. Had the cheek to flick me the vs and swear at me when I suggested he might want to look where he was going.

Yesterday, cycling home about 6pm, on the hill from Dalmeny Estate Gate to Dalmeny village, there were three cyclists about 100m ahead of me, spread out about 100m themselves. A silver car over took me and moved in, then a black one came out and tried to overtake the whole line- blind corner not far ahead. Silver car compounded this by trying to overtake the cyclists as the black one was overtaking it, moving out into black car's line. Cue loud horn blaring from black car's driver who then performed the desired manoeuvre. If another car was coming the other way round this corner, someone would have been toast.

Have you seen Magnatom's latest video? I believe there's a German word which sums it up perfectly:

Big grey ute liveried as "PXS Restoration" or somesuch, who seemed offended by me going ahead of them at the Morrison St/Link ASL and slowing down (rather than ploughing through) a pedestrian crossing opposite Ryrie's and so punishment-passed me rather closely heading up Dalry Road. They then turned into Cathcart Place, where they were still clearly in view, trundling slowly along when I passed its end.
