@kaputnik - I noticed that last night too, total chaos.

I wondered if temporary traffic lights onto the roundabout would help ease the problem or just shift it further away from the roundabout?

Mini-man who drove 1-2 meters off by back wheel coming out of Craigleith Shopping Centre onto Groathill Ave yesterday evening. Apparently I should have been in the gutter. You should be in anger management.

I encountered a suspiciously multi-tasking motorist this morning. Reported via 101.

If they hadn't overtaken in such a ridiculous manner they might even have got away with it, but alas my spidey senses were alerted.

Someone got as far as having their rear wing alongside me before they realised/remembered about the traffic-island/pinch-point on Peffermill Road, whereupon they thankfully stopped sharply rather than swerved sharply.

A couple of drivers yesterday decided that the reduced visibility and handling of driving in the rain at night meant they should accelerate harder and faster when going for an overtake. The first nearly smashed into a Keep Left sign before a roundabout and the second played chicken with a coach.

This morning I nearly saw a smash at the same roundabout as an oblivious driver failed to yield to traffic already on the roundabout. Both cars came to a halt in time.

I would like to bring to the attention of the parish some eejit this morning who attempted to squeeze past me in slow traffic.

Their wing mirror was about to go under my handlebar when I noticed what they were doing and indicated displeasure.

Stationary traffic was about 20m ahead, and I was in the centre of the lane.

Private hire taxi at Blackford/W Savile terrace junction, I'm in bike lane going straight on up the hill, taxi to my right, taxi then just goes into the bike lane (where I am), no indication or anything helpful. It turns out he was turning left, and obviously that required him to be in the bike lane a good 20 metres before he could actually physically turn left. To be fair, he did indicate once I started shouting at him for nearly running me off the road. Also in his defence, he was very likely distracted by the plum on a folder (see Today's Rubbish Cycling) cutting in front of him from his right.

A lot of them out and about last night!

Me on Facebook: One of your van drivers regarding starting TN05 cut me up turning from a side street onto main road (then went into advanced stop box at red lights when it was already red and slowly moved over the white line while still red). He had good line of sight of me approaching and I had to brake sharply to avoid hitting him putting myself and others potentially at risk. Curious whether this is something your company takes seriously?

Eden Group Thank you for the feedback. Off course this will be investigate further next time the driver is in the office. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Eden Group Can you confirm the exact location and time of the incident please

Thanks. Turning from Moredunvale Road onto Old Dalkeith Road at approximately 17.45

Also, a JM Builders van cut across traffic that was starting to move on Melville Drive to turn up Marchmont Road. Tried to bully his way past me despite me have right of way, when I held my nerve waved his fists in annoyance and mouthing presumed insults.

This morning, cycling through holyrood park, beeped at apparently purely because I was on the road. I presume, as I always do, a friendly beep from a cycling fan and respond accordingly :)

    "respond accordingly :)"

So do you have pre-autographed photos or do you offer to sign the copy of the Sun that's inevitably sitting on their dashboard?

I love the feel of fresh adrenaline in the morning.

Its good to get a reminder of why we need lanes not lines on some roads............

@Stickman - I like the way phones light up their stupid faces.
Serious aggro from a chap driving along Commercial/Salamander St last night. He rolled into the ASL behind me, and as I set off I may have wobbled a bit (maybe intentionally). Seemed to take issue with my presence - lots of revving and angry looks. I filtered at the next set of lights - same routine. He made a big fuss of overtaking, just to have to wait to turn right. I may have called him a clustering crumptart.

Got a reply from Stagecoach re my recent incident which is quite good IMO - reads a little less like a form letter than Lothian Buses' recent efforts:

    "Good afternoon Mr X

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us and bring this recent incident to our attention.

We were very concerned to learn of this incident and would like to assure you that we deem conduct such as this not acceptable. At Stagecoach East Scotland we invest a great deal of time, energy, and resources into providing comprehensive training to all of our drivers. This training covers all aspects of the drivers’ role, but has a particular emphasis on safety and as such, receiving complaints of this nature is always disappointing. I can confirm that all drivers employed in East Scotland have attended a Cyclist Awareness course over the last 12 months, and this, along with other aspects of the training programme are regularly monitored with employees undergoing retraining as necessary to ensure these standards are maintained throughout their employment.

Your email was passed to the relevant Operations Manager and I can confirm that this incident has now been investigated, and the driver identified and interviewed in line with company procedures to ascertain exactly why he behaved in this manner. I can confirm that following this investigation the driver has been dealt with in line with internal disciplinary procedures and will be undergoing retraining as necessary to ensure improved driving practices ad vigilance going forward. However, you will understand that due to the confidentiality attached to such matters we are unable to elaborate in any further detail about the particulars of the action taken.

Please accept our sincere apologies for this drivers actions, and we hope you can take some comfort from the fact that our actions will prevent instances such as this from happening again.

We again thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention, and should you have any further concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards

    Customer Services
    Stagecoach East Scotland"

A woman driving onto Inverleith Row who apparently decided just to pull out in front of another motorist. Much screeching of brakes occurred and a collision was avoided. That other driver should have been wearing a hi-viz car..

The rider of Papa John's scooter SN63PWO, who made a point of rolling into 3 consecutive ASLs between George St & Dundas St. Worsened by a marginal RLJ & multiple sharp lane changes without indicating. A pox on him & his company.

I was driving today for the first time in ages, and was reminded time and again why cycling to work is so much better. Not just the queues, but the general meanness of other drivers not giving way when they should, blocking box junctions and - most annoying - calder road traffic blocking the roundabout at the top of broomhoouse road.

I was trying to turn left so, being unable to penetrate the line of cars feeding across the roundabout into the right hand lane (of the exit), I had to take the left then attempt to merge before the bus lane starts. Jeeze. Talk about uncooperative. Unbelievable.

Thankfully, back on the bike tomorrow. How did I do the car commute all those years?

I got a lift into central Livingston with a colleague at lunchtime yesterday. Colleague is pulling away from some traffic lights, but apparently not fast enough for the idiot in the car behind, who proceeds to overtake. In a 30 zone when my colleague is driving at 30. Oh but look, there are temporary traffic lights, so idiot has to jam on the brakes and ends up in front of us in the queue...

I didn't realise that a Nissan Qashqai was a type of bike, as apparently it's bikes that cause all the problems on pavements.

The Sherriffs comments are pretty typical.

I think you need to take particular care driving in such an area.

Driving on the footpath is fine.

Just to let all forumites know, after a huge long wait, good news in that the driver who right-turned through me (when I was going straight ahead in a marked cycle lane), destroying my recumbent tricycle and busting two ribs received four penalty points and a two hundred pound fine in Edinburgh Sheriff Court. My ribs still hurt, of course, but at least I'm alive.

This started out as a fairly bog-standard situation: I had to break and swerve because on-coming vehicle on wrong side of road failed to notice me until very close. Given that it's a fairly regular occurrence I didn't react at all, no hand gestures, no shouting, nothing. But as we passed the van driver shouted something at me and I couldn't resist going back to ask find out what he'd said. The rest of the encounter was quite strange and resulted in a threat of violence by the army uniformed driver of white combo van WV07 WFA.

I had a close encounter on Monday morning with a Mercedes driver who decided he was far too important to sit in a traffic jam, and was about to use the bus lane instead.

I had the same thoughts, but I however was entitled to use the bus lane. For my own part I slotted myself through a gap that the driver didn't realise existed. However, Cyclo Math correctly predicted that our trajectories would intersect at that precise moment, and the torpedo nearly became a statistic.

I did eventually get a bit of an apology from the driver.

But more generally, what the heck is going on with the traffic in the evenings? The number of vehicles seems completely off the charts. This evening I wasn't riding home til half six, and yet the Calder Road was chockablock both ways, the roundabouts were jammed, Longstone was jammed in both directions, and so was Slateford.
