Oh, I forgot that it's one-way so they weren't driving at me on the 'wrong' side of the road but they were still driving at me in any case, which I wasn't happy about. Looking at the junction on Street View I see that it is a "Traffic calmed area" that they were entering in a far from calm manner: Google Street View link

There's definitely an issue with driving in that area -- last year when I was around in the evenings for my crochet course (avec Mme Iwrats) I often heard / saw 'supercar' like behaviour - lots of revving and accelerating from high performance cars. very intimidating and unpleasant.

Not so much bad driving but an indictor of it being extremely likely judging by a conversation I had earlier. Started off nice enough with a 'your brave cycling in that' but degenerated into comments of 'cyclists deserve it if they cycle in conditions like this' and 'it should be compulsory for all cyclists to wear high viz'.

I pointed out to her that most cyclists would probably adjust their cycling to suit the conditions and that all drivers should be doing the same. I also pointed out that high viz didn't stop a driving failing to hit me.

Still annoyed at her for such stupid comments and wondering if she should be on the road!

  5. Yesterday, Gilmerton Rd:

Do people use Collideoscope? I quite like it as it's map-based, so it's easy to find reports from the same location.

  6. This morning 9:17 Mayfield Rd/Esslemont Rd.

Traffic lights were green in North-South direction, car coming from Mayfield Rd south at fairly high speed turned right into Esslemont Rd almost hitting a cyclist who was going south along Mayfield Rd. Cyclist slammed brakes and wobbled into Esslemont Rd to avoid the car, car driver slammed on brakes and managed to stop in the middle of the southbound lane before hitting cyclist.

I was observing from the toucan traffic lights (waiting to cross into KB), another cyclist next to me turned around and commented "that was really close!"

At South Charlotte St - liveried Dove Davies white Transit van driver got into an argument with a Lothian Buses driver, abused his horn plenty, then when the lights changed, angrily tailgated said bus extremely closely at huge revs into Lothian Rd, tooting all the while. All in the midst of a complete deluge. Moron. Have informed his employers.

Chap turned right from side road onto Gorgie Road, got rather too close to me, then decided he wanted to stop and talk to me about something. I'd just been to the dentist and was in no mood to discuss the finer points of headwear, bin-men outfits, or who pays for the road (and why this is relevant to not hitting a fellow road-user) so I just told him to go away and wouldn't talk. Possibly I should have at least found out what he wanted to say...

You mean he didn't look like he wanted to apologise??

I don't think so... and certainly "Sorry" was not one of the words I heard... something about a light, I think (this was after 9am, so broad daylight (if grey and rainy) - oddly enough I had my rear light on as a token effort, but not the front).

Nothing startling on my journey today, only 3 RLJ at Groathill/Queensferry Rd junction and 2 drivers not realising it was dark.

I've been through there a few times since and I'm fairly sure he was fully on the other side of the road before he could see around that blind corner.

Naturally, I passed him at the next lights and he wasn't seen again.

    @charlethepar, from that article:
"Goble gave no explanation in court for acting in the way he did and insisted he was a "keen cyclist"."
So there should be an issue with a lifetime ban once he is released then.

    decent enough letter from Asda:

I'm really sorry to hear about this! I can understand your concern as this certainly isn't the way in which we expect our drivers to behave. I'm pleased you've taken the time to let us know about this.

From the information you've provided, I can see the van belongs to our Chesser store. I've shared all your feedback and concerns with the Management Team in store so they can take a look into the issue further. They will take any action needed internally alongside the colleague involved to ensure this experience and level of service isn't repeated in the future. Changes will be made to ensure all of our drivers comply with the High Way Code and are considerate to other road users and pedestrians.

Any actions the store feel need to be taken will be internal due to Data Protection of the colleague involved can't be discussed further. I can assure you the matter will be dealt with accordingly.

I can only apologise for this experience. Thanks for making us aware and allowing me to address your concerns in order to make improvements.

Thought I'd give slushy Meadows a miss.

As sides of road (aka QBC) were slushy I stayed out in prime. Empty road behind and in front. Checking rear view mirror a white van is coming up from rear and tooted his horn before actually overtaking near Buccleuch St. On recliner with rear light - quite high one too so obviously too visible for him. Bad cyclist!

Of course he joined queue of traffic at Melville so went alongside as doing right turn. Looked at him with an open handed - 'what that's about?' gesture.
This angered him greatly causing him to shout loudly at me. Gist was that I should be 'in the gutter/paying road tax/not impeding his way'.
Driving gets worse with the weather. Hope his aggression serves him well.

That's a record btw. Under 4 minutes of cycling on a quiet road and first driver I interact with is an idiot van man.

Sheriff Linda Smith banned Yeardly from driving for four years, and fined him £450. She said: “You have pleaded guilty to a very high level of alcohol.”

Myself and SK60 KLJ black jeepy thing, both heading south this morning on Murieston Crescent, the driver decides to pass at the bump out just beyond the junction with Murieston Terrace, only to stop a few yards later at tail back from Dalry Road junction. FFS

Dark green Jaguary thing spurted loudly past on the tramside hatching on York Place, then pulled to the side (with hazards lit) to let its passenger get out at the gallery.

I would normally post someone else's video, but I think in this case since the police have essentially said they can't be bothered to find out what happened, the victim has encouraged this to be shared....

@algo, is it known why the police won't prosecute?, video is horrific.

@559 - if you read the description, the victim says the driver exploited a loophole which he doesn't want other drivers to exploit. In the comments there is some reference to this being a courtesy car which may have something to do with it. I don't know any more I'm afraid...

In an unusual move, the nose of a white car was inserted into the non-car-width space to my left as I sat in as primary as possible a position in the lane-marking-free roundabout end of Elm Row; impatient turnips usually prefer to steam past on the right, but perhaps this one was turning left (without indicating). Unsurprisingly, the same car was actually going straight across and then along York Place, where they had to wait until the gallery to steam authoritatively past.

Couldn't find a "rubbish sticker" thread so I'll put this here, I was cycling behind a van (white, of course) today which had a sticker on the back saying "this van stops suddenly" - at least they're letting us know that they can't drive considerately :)

Was brought to you by the impatient chump who tried to overtake me on FamilyNetwork9/Meadowhouse Road (narrow with speed bumps) into the face of an oncoming cyclist.

Fortunately he aborted the manoeuvre when he got shouted at by me and the other cyclist.
