My apologies to the cyclist who was going round the roundabout from Duke St to Easter Road as I was entering it from Vanburgh Place. I hate the fact that there's a junction on the left with Lochend Road as you approach, it makes for any number of distractions. I must do better :-(

The MGiF who over took me and another cyclist steaming down the hill in Juniper Green with loads of space but neglected to consider the five on coming cars who had to swerve into the gutter to avoid said drivest, I hope they enjoyed their 3 seconds of empty road as the inevitable queue for the Gilespie Crossroad loomed.

So this morning down in Bruntsfield we're waiting at one of the crossings as pedestrians along with people on the other side. Lights go red for vehicles and traffic duly stops. Bit of a delay before the green man comes on. Obviously too long a wait for one of the drivers who starts off through the red light.... closely followed by the driver behind them .... with the green man now on for people to cross!

These people have passed a driving test haven't they?

@twinspark That's interesting - I've seen a couple of incidents recently where drivers have stopped at a pedestrian crossing red light, then once the pedestrians have finished crossing, simply started off through the (still) red light - as if it only applies while there are peds actually on the crossing.

They do that with car traffic lights too. Yesterday at the Gilmerton Rd / Liberton Rd, the lights from Gilmerton Rd were stuck on red (possibly because a lorry had moved into the ASL and somehow confused the camera there into not seeing any waiting cars?)

So, after a while, drivers started to edge forward through the red light when Liberton Rd was clear. All fine so far, but then more and more drivers just followed through the red light at increasing speeds, even when a new flock of cars came down Liberton Rd. - they still had green lights and the drivers didn't expect cars coming out of Gilmerton Rd., leading to a lot of sharp braking.

Funnily enough, I saw one driver raising the middle finger to another driver who had almost crashed into his side. But the finger man was actually the one who had ignored the red light!

Driver of white Transit YT59VFO who laughs in the face of highway code rule 162. Why should he wait for a sufficient gap to overtake into when he can use his giant van to create one?

Rain brings out the rubbish driving as usual. On the ride home tonight:

    - taxi in the Haymarket jug handle went through the red light as I approached then turned right towards town (think it's a no right turn there?)

    - massive marquee lorry parked facing the wrong way in the Sacred West Coates bus lane

    - private hire cab stopped in the ASL at Roseburn

    - car pulled out of a side street in front of me on Baird Drive

Still, can't have a segregated cycle path - those b****y lawbreaking cyclists demand enough as it is.

If he'd driven his car on the wrong side of the road and killed several people he would have gotten away with careless driving and not dangerous, judging by recent reports.

There is an (often huge) gap between what charges get laid and what gets pursued at court.

Very odd wording in the article too:
"The dramatic incident, which happened yesterday at Midlothian Snowsports Centre, Hillend, saw the blue Peugeot career down the approach road and collide with another car at around 12.45pm."

Makes it sound like the car was out of control, perhaps due to a handbrake being left off, rather than being driven dangerously.

    complaint sent to the council:
I am writing to complain about the aggressive behaviour of the driver of the above licensed taxi [W309 PSX].

At 08:46 this morning, I was cycling westbound in the rain along Riversdale Crescent. A taxi was coming towards me. Between us the road narrowed in a traffic calming measure. I judged I would reach it first and the taxi would probably give way.

Instead, however, the driver accelerated aggressively, overtaking another cyclist as he did, and I braked and moved to the side to allow him through. I shook my head to indicate that I thought his actions were inconsiderate – I made no other gesture or comment. But as he passed he screamed four-letter abuse at me.

Could you please speak to this driver? His bullying driving is concerning and dangerous, particularly on a school route like this, but more so is his clear and unwarranted aggression towards other road users. It is uncomfortable knowing that I might share a road with someone with such clear anger management issues."

The inability of W309 PSX's driver to behave properly has been noted before elsewhere. I've reported it at least once.

Yes, I found it ironically reassuring when I googled his registration. Not just me!

  19. Has anyone on here ever asked/FOI'd the council to see if there have been multiple complaints against a particular cab/cabbie?

If you had used such an excuse years ago you would have probably been hit with a charge of not taking conditions into account. Nowadays it seems to be accepted for all manners of poor driving.

The driver who hit me used that line despite it not even being sunny!

  21. Googling the taxi came up with http://mccraw.co.uk/dooring-depressingly-common/

Totally emphatically disagree with this: "I could write to the council and report the taxi – 8am, no stopping zone, W309 PSX (taxi number 1199) and a clear offence under Construction & Use… but what’s the point? It would merely be noted as no death occurred"

It's always worth reporting bad taxi drivers. There may not be much action in individual cases, but if there are repeated complaints (like here) then it may lead to something. Perhaps if he had received a warning the first time he may have been more careful this time.

Reporting a taxi driver to the council (and similarly bad commercial drivers to their company) doesn't take much effort, it's not like going to police where you have to waste an enormous amount of time and essentially collect all the evidence yourself and still nothing happens.

One taxi I reported had been previously reported by another forum user several months earlier - despite the physical (and behavioural) similarities we had noted the reply to the latest complaint claimed it had not been the same driver. I would imagine there's be some record somewhere of which of a multi-user cab's multiple drivers was at the wheel for any given session but it was seemingly not something the licensing office demanded or saw.

I had a taxi complaint rejected by the licensing office who said no female drivers were registered for that vehicle (or words to that effect) but I know what/who I saw very clearly. One suspects dodginess abounds. And the licensing office is about as much use as a chocolate teapot at preventing it, or pursuing complaints.

You would have thought that an unregistered driver would be a pretty serious infringement.

  25. I had a reasonable response when I reported a driver. In any case, it's not much effort to send an email.

I just don't get it how people go through the trouble of uploading a video to Youtube and write a blog about it and then not bother to send the link to the council. Perhaps you don't get the response you want, but you're not investing much effort sending the mail, so why not?

It's different with the police. I would think twice or three times now before contacting the police; it's not just that they are usually unhelpful unless you have collected bullet-proof evidence, the bigger problem is that you have to be prepared to spend a lot of time. Either it's not enough for a prosecution, then nothing happens, or it is, then you have to take a a day off work and spend a day in the court waiting room without ever saying a word.

I did include a link to Google with my complaint so hopefully the video will have been seen this time around.

Airport roundabout. First driver goes through the green light that controls access to the roundabout. Then slams the on brakes at the no longer used give way line. Taxi runs into the back of her.

Interesting to consider the insurance liability on that one!

The short answer is that it will be 50/50. A longer answer might consider the need to be able to stop in the distance available & the also muse on the depressing stupidity of not being able to understand a perfectly simple junction. :-(

@MurunBuchstansang I had the exact same rejection of a licensing complaint - different gender. This is definitely an easy brush off for these drivers, apparently the cab I complained about only had one lady driver. Black cab? Yeah right. Interesting to see if others have this too.
