Coming out of Livingston North station car park. The main access is down the middle, with parking either side. There's a car looking to cross the main access, which I am riding on. It is downhill. I clock that the driver has not looked at me yet, so swing a bit away from him to give him more time to see me.

He still hasn't looked. I get on the brakes, but to be honest I really need new brake blocks and I'm not stopping quickly enough. He's still coming. Now I start yelling. He's going to hit me.
    I'm going to be hit.
No, he's spotted that he has a woman on a bicycle in front of his car and he stops. So do I.

To give him credit, he apologised and waited until I got myself together before he went off. I was pretty shaken.
"I didn't see you" he said. Well, yes, you wouldn't have pulled out if you'd seen me.
"Well look next time," I said, and "You didn't hit me..."

Had a good rant with one of my cycling colleagues and felt better. (Bike will be off to the shop this weekend for a bit of a service!)

Open-backed truck thing jumping the red from Commercial Street to Bernard Street this morning whose driver and passenger both felt somehow entitled to splutter and scream at the pedestrian who'd been about to start crossing because the lights had turned red and the only vehicle coming off the Shore was signalling the other way.

Someone with a half-defrosted rear window who felt it necessary to overtake at 30 in the last twenty metres up to the Dalry/Murieston junction.

Someone trying to squeeze between a cyclist going past a bus and me in the right-turn lane on West Maitland Street.

@Rulou - yes, very interesting that you had a similar experience. I wish I could say I was surprised, but I'm really not :( #professionaldrivers

@Fimm - I have had the exact same things happen to me along that road only the car didn't stop but shot straight by, missing my front wheel by inches! Given the amount of black ice on the roads this morning - you were particularly lucky that both you and the car could stop!

This happened in almost exactly the same location as a fatal crash in 2012. Given the driver ended up inverted it seems lucky wasn't more serious.

You often hear about cars flipped over and I find it a bit hard to imagine how this happens in a collision. How fast do you have to go for a typical car to flip over when you make a sharp turn or brake, or hit a kerb or something?

There is of course the famous Mercedes that flipped over in the Moose Test, but it seems cars generally manage up to 70-80kph and then skid rather than flip.

    "the driver ended up inverted"

I chose that phrase deliberately as I wasn't posting in the sentient beings thread. It's also interesting that the news is reporting it as a crash rather than an accident.

Although many drivers do speed on Maybury Road I would suspect that this close to the roundabout that the driver was within the legal limit. On a skid pan I assume it would be very hard to roll a car so assume that something in the collision with the other vehicles caused the car to roll.

Given that there was three vehicles involved without further details it's impossible to say who is at fault. Perhaps the driver lost control accelerating away from the roundabout or perhaps one of the other vehicles crossed the centre line and initiated the contact. I'm assuming that the civic was heading northbound and the others southbound but again that could be incorrect with the civic rolling up the hill rather than down.

Alongside a black car, me in "cycle lane", at Summerhall when the car started to indicate left and move across me. Great.

A bit of shouting, they relied on me slowing down so they could complete their manoeuvre, rather than holding off their lane change until I'm out of the way...

Cue the "I'll look straight ahead, both hands on steering wheel, no acknowledgement that I've just tried to left hook you" response to my death stare!

Richardson said it was aggravating that Keith was going more than 100 km/h in a 50-km/h-zone, he was driving the wrong way on a one-way street in a busy residential area, his blood-alcohol level was .215 and he had a bad driving record with multiple fines for speeding convictions.

Honked at twice in 2 days:

    1) While taking the lane through a traffic island.

If you're indicating you would've liked to pass me through that island (instead of waiting the 5s until it was safe) I'm 100% happy with my road position.

This was followed by a decent pass with plenty of space.

    2) Just before signaling right to turn off the road.

If you come up behind a vehicle which has moved to the right of the lane (noone behind me when I did this) and is slowing, and you can't figure out what's going on, you shouldn't have a license.

This was followed by an aggressive dive for the gap between me, the kerb and the parked car a few meters ahead. I managed to curtail it with a slight wobble left, resulting in a further 1-2s delay (for a total of ~7s).

EDIT: I know honking isn't the most dangerous thing but the complete lack of patience is frustrating!

http://www.caledonianpropertyservices.co.uk/ van blocking ASL at north bridge/High Street going uphill this morning. Move in front of van because that's a tight corner. Honk. Look round, guy is gesturing at gutter. Shout to point out he's in the ASL and it's for bikes. Get full "ya fanny" flappy hands by face and face pulling (plus words I can't hear so I give him the finger (...I know, but come ON).

Get to work, call company - ah logo'd vans - and get told (1) I'm in the wrong because I gave the driver a rude gesture (2) if being honked at startles me I ought not to be on a bike anyway. No response to my repeatedly pointing out that he shouldn't have been in the ASL and that I don't have to ride in the gutter, and I would appreciate it if they would make this clear to their drivers - no response except angry and defensive reiteration that their driver was in the right. Now FURIOUS after putting the phone down on their rep. RARRRR. Regret my middle finger only because it has lost me some moral high ground. But not that much.

Likely "man-with-van" company. The only time I get that sort of response to a complaint is from a sole operator or small business.

Reputable (and larger) companies will respond to complaints more constructively - if nothing else, those answering the phone will have some customer service awareness and make noises such as, "I'm really sorry to hear that... I understand that this was frightening/upsetting/a negative experience for you..."

@wingpig - I was wondering what caused the big grey metal pole at the top of Easter Rd/London Rd to be flattened and wrapped in police tape.

@earthowned There was a small squadron of Highway Maintainers parking their vans at inappropriate points around the junction when I went past a few minutes behind you. At least they were highly-visible, whereas someone almost ran into the large red fire engine parked on the junction last night.

@stiltskin Caledonian Property Services - reasonably big I think? @algo, @Roibeard I think a letter to whoever is in charge might be in order..!

Perhaps leave Caledonian Property Services some feedback ... https://www.mybuilder.com/profile/view/caledonian_property_services, or indeed if you google them, you can "be the first to review" them with google reviews.

It's a one man band, privately owned company. I wouldn't waste the effort with someone as small as this.

Inverted car about 50m E of Lochend Road exit onto A8. Must have had some acceleration/impact to have got up to speed from Newbridge Roundabout to do that.

Traffic down to 1 carriageway, directed by Police while recovery in operation. Good clear interaction with Police Officer who acknowledged me as soon as he saw me and checked my intentions while managing the drivers.

There was also a van off the road this morning near the bottom of the Lanark Road. Its front was all stoved in by the extremely study lamp post. Polices were in attendance.

Jack-knifed lorry on Stevenson Road caused TRAFFIC CHAOS last night. Don't know how it managed to get into that position. Thought it would have to be going fast to do that?

Another one I just remembered- a McQueen Dairies Van crashed into the Gate on the old A90 route between Dalmeny Village and Agilent.

Odds high on a "sat nav sent me there" story and "I was so busy looking at that, that I didn't look ahead to see a bl00dy great gate there..."

    @paddyirish, this one:

Sat Nav error (or handbrake left off) was my first thought too but I think McQueens would likely have recovered it quicker if it had been their driver at the wheel when it demolished the gate. So possibly more likely to have been joy riders when then driver left the engine running to jump out and make a delivery.

It might end up being a good thing if it encourages the council to speed up the improvements to access on this section of the NCN 1.

Yesterday, Lochend Rd. Hurled at least three lines of abuse from the passenger side for not riding in the door zone.

Today, Easter Rd. Given a full overtake length blast of the horn after taking primary through an island.
