  1. @ih, that's the problem with not actually having been there I guess. You do the same thing when you say, "It is difficult from the clip to get a full idea of perspective and speed" but follow up with an absolute, "I feel confident in saying that the bike right turn was quite legitimate if the car had been driven anywhere on the spectrum of acceptable. It wasn't. He accelerated excessively in the short stretch before his left turn"

While others will interpret as, 'that gap was too short to turn before the car'.

And then fence sitters like me who reckon we probably would have done the same thing, while noting it could have been 50:50 on making him stop.

So in essence only erob knows the actual score, felt they were in the right, felt the driver was in the wrong, and I'll go along with that. WHat is 100% certain is the driver's reaction to any perceived issue was over the top.

@Wilmington. I know, but it is valid to say of something, "although I don't know absolutely everything, within the limits of what I can see, I am confident that..."

"Would that, in practice, not mean slowing down on the bike every single time you come to a side street with a car waiting to turn into the road in case it misjudges your speed"

No, but it would mean covering the brakes and moving right.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  6. Which, in fairness to my response, isn't what you said, "You just slow down to account for it"

"So in essence only erob knows the actual score, felt they were in the right, felt the driver was in the wrong, and I'll go along with that."

When I started moving I felt the gap was there. After starting the manoeuvre I realised he was closer than I'd anticipated he would be. This was my mistake, no denying that. If he was closer because he was going faster than I'd thought, that's still my mistake. Only if he accelerated after I'd started moving could some blame go to him, but I can't tell if that was the case.

After realising my mistake, I dealt with it by getting out the way as fast as I could. I felt at the time, and after extensive reviewing of the video that I'd dealt with it adequately and avoided any incident, especially as he would've been slowing to turn anyway.

"You just slow down to account for it. "

I realise I didn't phrase this very well. I meant, if people make mistakes/errors in judgement you slow down, allow them to recover and have a little 'tut' to yourself.

  8. Ach, combination of me being a picky git as well :)

Like I say, I doubt I'd have done anything differently.

This morning, the car coming from Morrison Street that decided at the last second to make a right turn across Haymarket junction to get to Grosvenor Street, scattering the people crossing on the green signal.

Spotted this one silly person in a grey Astra at the traffic lights at Rodney Street to Cannonmills at the front of the queue. Sprints off to get to the petrol station on the left a short distance away almost but not nearly hits a high roof Renault van that was turning into the same entrance from the opposite direction.

So this person was rushing to get fuel? I'd have thought if you were running out you'd drive cool figuratively speaking?

SB15 BCE - Seems to think an arm held out to the right means "please overtake, eyeball me and cut in asap"

Driver of CCLASP-branded van drifted into left lane at traffic lights outside Playhouse, without looking at the two cyclists that were in said lane.

    "I saw you!"

Aye sure you did pal, you didn't even notice when I whacked the side of your van.

Surely "I saw you, and still almost ran you over" is even worse than "I didn't see you".

Silver Prius taxi shouting at me for not moving sufficiently left quickly enough for his liking. When I attempted to (politely) explain that I was avoiding the potholes he drove off. When I inevitably caught up I explained again as politely as I could to be told there was no need to make a song and dance about it. Next time I'm breaking into song - might as well....

Did anyone else see the car clamped in the West Coates bus lane with an "Untaxed" sticker on it? Could they not also have towed it out of the lane?

He was brought to justice with the help of dashcam footage from the victims' Vauxhall and witness accounts that described his manoeuvre before the crash as "absolutely ridiculous".

  19. If he doesn't get a custodial sentence then there is something seriously wrong with this country.

He got 4.5 years. He'll be able to drive again but will have to retake test.

Why isn't there a lifetime road ban for people like this. Driving dangerously then trying to weasel out of the consequences with a barrel of lies. He should be glad he will be able to walk free in just a few years, something his victims will sadly never be able to do.

I know I'm preaching to the converted but why do I get the feeling the police would have done very little had he narrowly missed the collision while pulling off a stupid stunt like this?

At two different points today I watched enormous HGVs blindly following their satnav south out of Morningside and through all the No Entry signs at the bottom of Comiston Road before realising their only option was to turn onto Morningside Drive.

I know it's difficult driving those enormous lorries through the the narrow streets of Edinburgh, but surely they keep some eye on what the signs outside are telling them.

...and it must be said that the standard of selfish behaviour in general by drivers at Morningside Station has fallen to a new low since the introduction of the road works. I saw four cars go through the same red light this afternoon.

  25. There's a black BMW X5 that appears to do the same 'no right turn except for cyclists' right turn from Melville Street into Manor Place (and thence into St Mary's car park).

There's part of me thinks 'well, they're doing it really really slowly, and frankly I can't understand the changes they made to the road there after I worked on Manor Place for a number of years'. But there's the other part of me that says 'it's the rules!!!!', knows they come along Melville Street so a right, left, left using Walker Street and Chester Street is hardly any detour at all. And. They're driving a BMW X%. Irrational though it is, I tend to think the worst of such urban SUV drivers...

Happened in October, but the police have now "resolved" the issue by telling the guy "about the use of the cycle boxes and conduct to other road users".

EDIT: Should add, language is NSFW.

The roundabout at the end of London Road again.

A minibus for transporting handicapped people, driver was on his phone.

A large van with a trailer pulls out of the Antigua street exit withought stopping. Same thing happens with a smaller van at the B901 roundabout later on. Last two continue on like I was never there.

Followed a van down McDonald Road this morning. At every speed bump it was driven into the cycle lane so only two wheels went over the bump.

I assume he was very thorough with checking his mirrors as there were 3-4 cyclists nearby.

    What?!

So cruising through both stop lines, then getting out of your car and threatening to "rip your f'ing Heid off" is merely worthy of a quiet chat seven month later?

    Police Scotland are truly pathetic.

Apparently so. It took a lot of pressing just to get them to have that quiet chat, too.
