Modern petrol engines are so quiet these days, normally all you can hear is the tyre noise. No different to an electric car really.

So my incident I reported a couple of days ago I can now confirm was with RIG 4886 - one of the long black vans used by the fruit and veg shop on Argyle Place. This morning I'd estimate its speed on Sciennes Road at around 45 mph. I wasn't run off the road this time, but the driving seriously scares me...

If you can be bothered, go to St. Leonards Police Station and try to talk to whoever does 'community policing'.

Small grey van was very impatient getting past some cyclists at Haymarket junction this evening, and once past the station went revving off down Haymarket Terrace.
Of course I caught up with him at the lights at Roseburn, where he then illegally stopped outside the ScotMid. An important and valued member of the local community who should not be impeded by cyclists, if the Community Council is to be believed.

Might have had a can of coke thrown at me by a passenger earlier. I think they were "just" littering, but it wasn't far away from me. Looked like a wee kid, possibly just bored and throwing a tantrum.
Is it just me who's had a lot of stuff thrown at them whilst cycling? In the last year I've had two separate egg-throwing incidents (one successful, one miss), been hit with a stone and now this can of coke.

" Is it just me who's had a lot of stuff thrown at them whilst cycling? "
This isn't rubbish driving, but last summer, twice had stones thrown at me on NEPN from the Boswall Road bridge. So far this summer no problem encountered.

Dear MacTours,
At shortly before 6pm on Wednesday 10th August I (cycling) was followed up Waterloo Place then Regent Road by MacTours vintage bus #292 JSJ 747. As I approached the roundabout by the old Royal High I was aware of the bus being extremely close to me, growing closer and moving right as if the driver was about to attempt to overtake prior to reaching the traffic island/keep left sign. Further along Regent Road (where the road has the fence in the middle) the bus was still very close - about a metre away behind and to my right. As there are parked cars along this stretch of road I prefer to stay at least a car's door's width from the cars, but was fearful to do so with the bus so close. I made waving-back gestures to the driver, which he clearly saw but chose to ignore, merely coming closer and pulling alongside. He should hopefully be identifiable from the time and vehicle number. If not, I have a photograph showing his face as he gave me a sarcastic thumbs-up as I photographed the vehicle's registration. Please apprise him of the dangers posed by car doors to cyclists (and the dangers of twelve-tonne buses, for that matter).
Regards...

What a disgrace that this is even necessary!

As I was joining Melville Drive at the traffic lights at the west end of NMW this morning, despite the fact that I had set off onto the road on the full amber light and the traffic to my left was approaching at well under 20 mph, the driver of the car closest to the lights chose to keep going as if the lights weren't changing to red so I ended up swerving around the front of the car. I lifted my hand in frustration and then pointedly took the middle of the lane for the 50 m or so until the driver ended up at the back of a traffic queue as I continued on the bike lane.

What a disgrace that this is even necessary!" its is a disgrace, but at least this option exists in England and wales in Scotland unlikely to be an option so subject to the whims of procurator fiscal

"Dear wingpig,
I have had an opportunity to investigate your complaint and traced the driver concerned. As we operate within the tourist sector I expect all my staff to maintain the highest of standards, this particular driver has failed to sustain our requirements. I have passed on your email to my colleague who will deal with the driver, part of this interview will be to remind the driver that cyclist will need more consideration as a road user. I am also concerned that the driver saw fit to gesture to you and draw the bus closer to you, this is unacceptable and will also be dealt with by my colleague.
Please accept my apologies for my driver’s behaviour and the upset you experienced. Also thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact me on this matter."
I shall thank him for his swift and positive response. Way faster than LB.

A 30-year-old man from Andover, who was driving one of the lorries involved in the crash, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed until 5 October.

Re the necessity to hear the approach of vehicles, those old enough to remember when there was a cycle week on the Isle of Man may also recall the locals referring to bikes fleein' down off the Mountain as the whispering death.
I've no idea if the stats reflected this.

Driver of a Peugeot people carrier thing on Great Junction street who undertook me through the Bonnington Road junction/bus lane in order to join the obvious long queue for the Leith Walk lights.
Must've been frustrated at being stuck behind me while I waited for the pedestrian crossing and casually approached the red traffic lights.

Dunedin Canmore van pulling out of Moreddun Park Road, blocking the cycle lane; driver on the phone, confused look on his face when I suggested not putting it away.

Driver of private hire purposefully pulls into ASL at red light, jokes and laughs with passenger while I point at the box. As light goes green he sits there revving. Oh great, one of these...

Travelling on a motorway. Just terrifying.

Saltire Bakery van driver on his mobile phone as he drove through Charlotte Square this morning.
The large crowd of children heading into the book festival clearly didn't make him think twice.

Large Yodel van who pulled up and completely blocked a pedestrian crossing my kids and I were waiting at, literally 2 feet in front of our faces, only for the driver to jump out to use the adjacent ATM. Politely asked him not to do it again and got a grudging acknowledgement. Wishful thinking though.

Close pass from a white van man earlier. For the first time ever, though, the driver wound down the window and apologised to me.

Used to live beside. It's a bad 100m of road. IMHO the problem is a factor of it being far too wide and straight, wide enough for even a speeding driver to pass a stopping bus without slowing down much. Drivers turning out of Springwell Pl, Cathcart Pl and LIDL need to be super cautious of these manoeuvres. It was even worse when the petrol station was open.

Edinburgh Taxi cab 1262 - I'm sorry but bicycles are just inherently quicker at getting around town at rush hour at this time of year. We're not the ones holding up the traffic!
Motorcyclist (SM14 HMD) - please learn some manners and be courteous to other road users. Your erratic behaviour this morning was disconcerting to those who were near to you.

Turning right off Niddrie mains road this morning, I have indicators on the back of my seat that are brighter than most motorbike indicators, so it's impossible not to see that I am indicating. Was overtaken whilst in the middle of turning, when I was already on the other side of the road. Guy couldn't wait a couple of seconds for me to get out of his path and stay on the left, he had to do a crazy veering round me on the right as I was heading onto the side road.

Heading west in Corstorphine yesterday just before the old childrens home and just about wiped out by some driver taking a right coming the other way.
The stupid idiot only looked at the stationary line of cars who kindly left him a gap and didn't even look at the bus lane until he heard an emergency stop from my brakes followed by some cursing from me at his stupidity.
Thank goodness for disc brakes

Another driver failed to give way to me at Teviot Place this morning despite, on this occasion, having just given way to the bicycle ahead of me. I swerved to the right to avoid the faux by four as the driver pulled out slowly in front of me and then caught up alongside the right hand side of the vehicle and stared at the female driver. She seemingly realised her mistake and slowed down, at which point I completed the overtake before switching over into the left-hand lane and then turning off to head down MMW.

Close passed by 2 vehicles in convoy at Haymarket alongside the taxi rank - an estate car closely followed by a taxi. Both were close enough to be slapped by my right arm without full extension, so it was tight, although only the taxi got that treatment. An interesting conversation with the driver ensued - apparently I'm supposed to ride in the door zone and the reason he was so close was that there was traffic coming the other way - he just would not listen to a contrary point of view. Think Highway Code Rule 67 covers us for this (cycle well away from parked vehicles), so will try quoting that next time (futilely, I'm sure). Anyone have any other leads on appropriate legislation to quote?
