It's not right and I'm sure the incident will be busy feeding the cycle of 'bloody cyclists' small talk around the office

I prefer to think it might make her think twice before using her car as a weapon again in the future.

I hear on the grapevine it's safer and more effective to use a foot against a mirror rather than a hand.

Been there before myself. I understand the inner feeling of "that's not appropriate behaviour, I'm ashamed of myself", but when someone backs you into a corner with a few tons of metal and a hundred or so horses power behind them, it's hardly a fair fight is it.

If it ever came to anything I'd tell the plod that the mirror made contact with me.

@IWRATS who got nicked and done? The close passer or your friend?

White car coming down the slope at Shandon Place at Margiotta, going at a decent speed, overtook a cyclist (not me) immediately veering left to avoid the wee traffic island and then right again into the colonies without really slowing down. The overtake didn't look particularly safe and it was school pick-up time as well so the speed was pretty unwise too for that stretch.

Actually last week - prompt response from BT Openreach, though some of it looks like a form letter. (Close pass by driver of Transit + trailer who then (after I filtered past in slow moving traffic) took the right turn at the next set of lights at the same time as me)

    Dear Vez

Thank you for contacting us and making us aware of your issue. I'm really sorry for the distress that has been caused. We are very conscious of our Openreach brand and have clearly not reached the high standards we set ourselves.

I've been able to find the details of the driver from the registration number you provided. The full details of the incident that you supplied have been passed to the driver's manager and they will deal with this matter as a priority. In addition they will make sure everyone located in or around the area in which the incident happened are reminded of their personal responsibility to drive safely and with consideration for others.

The complaint will be dealt with appropriately through our internal disciplinary process, the outcome of which will remain confidential.

I caught the back end of a disagreement between a vulnerable human cyclist and the driver of an enormous SUV thing on Giles Street this morning.
I've had a few incidences of having something approach from Henderson Street far too quickly and without slowing down sufficiently to either let me round the corner first or to take the turn slowly enough to leave more space on the inside. From what I could gather this cyclist had been subjected to the same - the driver had stopped on the corner, clearly displaying how she'd left two feet on the inside at the apex of the curve and more space on the other side, where there were the usual several parked cars which might have left some unsightly red paint on her shiny black bumper if she'd scraped them. She seemed to have been objecting to the cyclist's request not to be squished against the kerb. I couldn't get through the space on the left where the cyclist was, so was waiting until they'd finished. In an apposite demonstration of the way large and heavy vehicles get their way on the road, a bin lorry then approached from Henderson Street, whereupon the driver started moving again, whilst continuing to insist she'd left lots of space, she hadn't been going fast and whatever. I don't think "just always drive carefully, madam, please" went down very well but she was sort of stuck with having to just drive on as there was a bin lorry behind her. The cyclist said he was OK but frightened.

I nearly got taken out on the Clerwood Terrace/Clermiston Road roundabout today, I was turning right from Clerwood Terrace and car approaching on Clermiston Road from left just went straight out in front of me. Just missed me, I think they only realised I was there when I shouted at them inches from their passenger window. Given the jolt it gave them I think I may have woken them up.

Also, don't know if there's a "rubbish pedestrians" thread, but two separate incidents last night of pedestrians just stepping into the road without looking causing much squeaking of brakes from me but fortunately no collision despite their best efforts, one at Abbotsford Park/Morningside Road junction, and one at Colinton Road/Merchiston Avenue junction.

To all those impatient drivers that nudge out of junctions when waiting for me to pass: that's only going to slow me down as I brake thinking that you haven't seen me.

Heading south on Liberton Road late last night, just before the turnoff for Gilmerton Road. In the right hand lane, as the left hand lane is blocked by roadworks. Oncoming driver swerves at me and sounds the horn. Don't think they actually crossed the line into my lane before swerving back, but still terrifying. At the time I thought maybe they'd just got confused and thought that I was in the wrong lane, but they were travelling in a nice straight line in the correct lane until they swerved at me, and weren't indicating either. Blue hatchback of some kind, on camera but no VRN since it was dark.

Gave Charlie irons the v sign at slateford today. His bus anyway gave me bad punishment pass. I was hanging back just as well as would have run out of road. He had taken up all the advance box unnecessarily, I watched him do it, lights at red. I went in front, lights changed almost goodnight Vienna. Tense moment when he waivered as if about to stop and I Considered catching him but settled at one v sign for one bad punishment pass

MGIF Taxi (large new style taxi, not black cab).

Reg SJ10 VOD (not sure about first letter, but I remember the rest accurately).

    5.10 - 5.15pm ish y/day.

We were both queuing (me in front) at light on Hutchison Terrace in left lane to turn left towards Asda.

On turning left I immediately indicated I'd be turning right onto New Market Road, and pulled over to the right.

The MGIF taxi pushed past me on my left, and then indicated right to turn onto New Market Road in front of me! Nice.

We then both turned left onto New Mart road, and I wasn't far behind him when he stopped at offices along on right (Dunedin Canmore by looks of it).

Oh, and I almost forgot.... Cab was emblazoned with adverts for "Life is better at 20 mph" (or whatever the logo is). Seemed somewhat ironic given the MGIF driver.

I had a truly hilarious MGIF the other day.

I'm in a queue for a red light somewhere. I've pulled up leaving a gap between me and the car in front because there's a pedestrian crossing and I don't want to block it. Lo and behold, the pedestrian crossing lights go red, and then green again. At this point, the main queue isn't moving so I don't move, but the car behind me pulls round me on my left and then pulls in front of me!

    Cheeky so and so.

Important person in a car importantly overtaking an unimportant northbound cyclist on Russell Road between bridges without noticing another unimportant oncoming cyclist in primary with a bright red T-shirt and big bright front dynamo light. We each called the driver a different name.

According to ukvehicle.com SJ10 VOD is a black Mercedes-Benz Minibus.

On the bus today and saw two crackers. A driver overtook the 26 bus and then immediately took a left, luckily for him the bus driver anticipated this crazy move. The other one I saw was a driver going into the zoo/hotel car park via the exit!

Large white Merc that accelerated hard to get through the pedestrian crossing on West Coates at Devon Place when it had been amber for a few seconds. Despite me waiting for the red light and being on a bike I still caught up with him at the red light at the Roseburn junction.

But you know, concerns about cyclists knocking down poor vulnerable pedestrians etc etc.

White van man (James Dunn & Sons, NG11 NBF) texting on his phone when I filtered past him on the Mound. Still texting when he passed me on George IV Bridge, and when I filtered past on Bristo Place. And when he passed me on Potterrow. When I caught up with him again at a red light on Buccleuch St, I stopped beside him and gave him a wave; he put his phone away, wound down the window and gave a thumbs up when I asked him to put the phone away whilst driving.

I last saw him going through a red light at the junction with Grange Road.

Can't find the parking thread so this will do.

Thought there was some big electricity emergency on as I came up Broughton Street as there was an SP Energy Networks Luton van parked totally across the pavement at the top and also spanning the double yellows, all the hazards and strobes on.

Turns out the driver was in Café Picanté getting his chippy tea.

@kaputnik No doubt following the example set by Police Scotland, parked in front of the dropped kerb and double lines on Leith Walk, adjacent to an empty parking space, responding to an emergency in the bacon roll queue at Greggs.

Ridiculously close pass this morning on Inglis Green Road from the driver of a Mercedes-Benz, SK16 AGX. The car was close enough that I could have reached out and touched it.

  29. Filtered past a fair queue of traffic on Atholl Place this AM, only to discover a Lothian Bus fully occupying the box at the ASL. Turned to remonstrate with the driver only to discover he was one of my pals.

We will be having words next weekend at the footy.

I remembered correctly then. It was a large "new style" black MGIF taxi.
