Ratcliffe Terrace - van parked on double yellows in the bike lane at the bottom, woman opens her car door as I approach halfway up, a car parked on double yellows in the bike lane at the top, then a guy pulling out from Grange Loan with the nose of his car covering the bike lane.

A saner person would consider not cycling that way at all.

But but that's the Quality Bike (i) Corridor.

Minto Street is much safer than it looks. Good sight lines and decent roadcraft from the bus drivers. (Reminds me - must write e-mail of congrats to Lothian Buses for good driving on Monday.)

I agree, IWRATS, it is my normal route from Gilmerton to city centre, but today I was going from KB to George Square.

That's odd - that story's been up for an hour, but there aren't tens of angry illogical diatribes about how these people represent all drivers and are responsible for the ills of the world...

You're right. There must be something wrong with the internet. I'll try switching it off and back on again.

I obviously didn't expect very much out of the drivers navigating the cramped car park of a popular out-of-town shopping complex in the combination of rain and seasonal retail frenzy this afternoon. They were taking similar miniscule amounts of care when pedestrinating between their vehicles and shops.

Grrr. Coming home from Harrison Park, micro-srd riding in front of us, but on the pavement because the rest of us were walking/roller-blading. Car reversing into driveway on Polwarth gardens. Passenger stops to remonstrate with me about him because 'we almost didn't see him'.

undertaken far too close by Brakes food delivery lorry this morning at the top of Queens St Gardens East.

Felt like it came from nowhere. Should have chased him down, but by the time I'd composed myself he was several 100m away. Terrifying.

Might be worth reporting if you're on Twitter (though expect standard response).

Goes to the driver of a fire engine who at about 06:50 squeezed a cyclist ahead of me onto the pavement at the Leith St pinch point (opposite the new John Lewis door) rather than hanging back five seconds to pass safely

The siren timing was very 'get out of my way' and not 'I am here'

I confess that a fire engine siren encourages me to get out of the way (in a safe place) rather than just note their existence, especially on a bicycle.

Far too close a pass on Duddingston Crescent this morning. I chased him down and caught up with him about 1k away in the car park of Southfield Medical Practice, by which time I’d calmed down enough not to be all sweary.

Me: Do you know how close you came to me back there ?
    Him: Yes.
    Me: ??????????
Him: The car next to me wouldn’t allow me to move over, I had no option but to pass close.
Me: You could always have not passed and waited 5 seconds.
Him: I don’t see why I should have to.
    Me: all sweary.

    End scene.

DRIVERS who kill are more likely to be punished with community service or fines as low as £1000 than a prison sentence according to figures which also reveal that hundreds more charges of careless and dangerous driving are dropped before they ever reach court.

Statistics obtained by the Herald under freedom of information reveal that only one out of 11 motorists who were charged and subsequently convicted of causing death by careless driving - for example, using a mobile phone at the wheel - was jailed in Scotland last year. The sentence was six months.

I popped out of the Goldenacre Path on Warriston Gardens, and needed to cross this road to reach driveway entrance to Goldenacre Bowling Club/Bridge Club. (Limited cycle parking is at top of drive/rear of building).

A car was pootling a along Warriston Gardens and indicating right into driveway where I was also heading. I waited for the car, and then cycled across the road behind it, as it turned into the driveway.

I had expected the car to accelerate up the driveway, but it fooled me by stopping abruptly about a yard over the entrance driveway. Silly me had failed to anticipate this, so also had to stop somewhat abruptly and my front wheel was less than a foot from the bumper. (Possibly my fault for being a little too close, and/or not anticipating the stop).

The driver then placed the car into reverse without looking, and started moving towards me. I was too close, and it all happened too quickly for me to take avoiding action, but thankfully shouting and arm waving alerted driver before she made contact.

(She was evidently using the driveway entrance to facilitate a three point turn in the road so she could park in the street.)

I got a mild apology from driver. I was very restrained in circs given she almost reversed over me. I said I hoped she had learned to look more carefully before both stopping abruptly and also before reversing. This got a shrug of the shoulders as if I was making an unnecessary fuss, and she pootled off.

I'm not sure but I'm guessing that G4S security vans aren't allowed to use turnings which are "bus, taxi, cycle only". So the driver that turned right from South Charlotte Street onto George Street was merely upholding the reputation that G4S have carved out for themselves in other spheres.

  25. I gave a big shoulder shrug and a point at the big painted bike in the Morrison Street/Haymarket bike box to the driver of Taxi 104 this morning.

Well, the tirade of expletives that came back instantly made even me (who could hold hid own in an Irvine Welsh novel) blush. I assumed I was the proxy for someone else whom he hated.

He then drove further forward, over the ASL so I could hear, not just lip read his verbals, which was I suppose thoughtful.

After all the usual anti cyclist rhetoric, I rather naughtily suggested I could smell stale alcohol and asked if he was hungover and wanted a paracetamol. Surprisingly he managed to up his anti. He left me as the lights changed asking "when was the last time you were under a cab?"

Thought I'd better report that one. Defo an angry older man (maybe 70?) whom I won't engage with next time

Ian McR, that's a classic. Yesterday, same thing, car behind me overtook on a blind corner rather than wait a few seconds. Then an oncoming car, overtaking another cyclist came right over onto my side of the road for an oncoming close pass. Musselburgh drivers...

@Edinburgh Cycle Training that's terrible. Glad you got the taxi number to report. Particularly his parting statement given what happened on Princes Street yesterday.

@Ed1 - expected driving standard from someone in a Focus ST, unfortunately.
