"Three car drivers overtook me going up Kirk Brae, just to turn left into Double Hedges Road."

    Well known/unnecessary rat run?

    Well known/unnecessary rat run?

I don't think so, but might depend on one's definition of a rat run...

I think the vast majority of cars go straight up Kirk Brae, and I'm struggling to see why people would go out of their way to take the Mayfield Road/Kirk Brae/Double Hedges Road route. DHR has speed bumps, the junction at the bottom of Kirk Brae can't be much faster than the junction at Lady Road, and you normally have to wait a bit to turn right onto Gilmerton Rd.

Just coincidence that there were three in a row tonight, I think.

Part of the M606 isn't expected to open until Saturday evening after a lorry spilled around 12,000 litres of paint across the road.

Black cab reacting to me signalling right on Lothian Road to move towards the turn into Fountainbridge by revving the engine and overtaking despite being a good couple dozen yards behind when I raised my hand. Argh.

This morning going South down CausewaySide about to turn left into Duncan Street, I was confronted by a small decorator's van turning right from my side of the street - a bit unnerving being driven directly at. He then attempted to pass me on Duncan street despite the parked cars, but thankfully gave up. When we reached the notorious junction with Minto Street, going straight over to Blacket Avenue, I waited as the traffic was blocked up and I didn't have enough sight-lines to push myself and the trailer out into the traffic, but he clearly felt differently and squeezed past us and set off straight ahead despite our presence. I may not have been very polite or quiet in my response to said manoeuvre.

I was walking towards the Roberston Avenue/Gorgie Road crossroads yesterday evening when I heard some impatient hooting. Then the Gorgie Road lights went green, and after that, a car, the driver of which I assume had been hooted at for failing to notice their green light, came flying through what must have been a very red light and nearly took out the car that was legitimately setting off on green...

I take it we've all collectively decided that the 20mph zones in the centre have failed and it's 30mph as usual? No policing of it and nobody seems to be even pretending to stick to the new limit....

Big increase in 20mph zones next month.

Presume it will be widely publicised.

Will need more (some?!) commitment on enforcing.

  12. On bits of my commute most noticably Regent Road, The park, Holyrood Road, I think the traffic has slowed a bit. Instead of doing 40ish, its now 30ish.

Other areas e.g. grassmarket I haven't noticed any difference as motor traffic tends to mostly crawl.

Princes Street is still a drag circuit for buses and taxis.

I take it we've all collectively decided that the 20mph zones in the centre have failed and it's 30mph as usual” The 20 mph sign to a taxi is akin to a cyclist dismount sign to a bike ( unenforced and considered unnecessarily ) don’t think people drive at 20 but may be 30 instead of 40.

Not sure I'd call that a failure. Arguably a massive success.

My piece of anecdata is that Nicolson Road now seems much more pleasant to cycle on.

Along the Pleasance and lower end of the High St most of the traffic seems to be doing 20 -25mph, so not bad, I'd say.

Other than through the park, which was an ignored 20 mph zone anyway, I haven't detected any drivers trying to push me on over 20 when driving. The new zones are confusing as no-one knows when they start, and they often have now redundant temporary 20 mph zones inside them outside schools (eg Easter Road). I'd say that most non taxis are observing the limits.

Cruising speed remains nearer 30. I'd say 26-28mph

Anything more than that looks a bit obvious if you care how you're perceived - but SMIDGAF are still doing 34-ish, typically professional drivers such as taxi / cowboy van drivers

SN63ZNK - Souped up silver Merc.

    • Stopped in the yellow box at junction with Allan Park Road preventing my exit[ -- no biggie happens all the time/*]
    • Accelerated hard and fast round the corner into Craiglockhart Avenue and fishtailed almost losing control
    • Started to overtake (and then thought better of it at the last minute) at least three cars that were turning right at the top of Craiglockhart Avenue onto Colinton Roadall because the car at the front of the queue hadn't notice the green filter.
    • Tried to undertake the car in front of him on his way up Colinton Road
    • The car in front prevented this undertake by pulling into the inside lane. This obvioulsly annoyed him so he floored it so that he could overtake the car and then cut back in in front of it

I thought he must be in a rush to get to the by-pass so he could get to Little France quickly for some sort of medical emergency, but no, he was just going to Tesco at Oxgangs. So was I and I pulled into the car park right behind him so he made absolutely no time savings. Took all my self control to prevent myself from letting him know "You drive like a c**t!". Funny thing was he was in the car with his girlfriend/wife, god knows what she thought of all this? I'm guessing it a regular occurrence, avoid at all cost.

    Thanks for posting this fimm.

I'd have been in that group if my sore throat had gone away.

Glad young Lewis is not too badly hurt.

    Take care.
    Cheers

Did anyone have a bike cam? It's a sorry horrible situation that I even have to ask that. I hope the multiple witnesses and maybe some CCTV result in some serious you'll-have-had-your-licence action from the polis.

Van person revving their engine at me, with passenger in seat, for having the audacity to take primary on the, what, 150 yards between the lights and the passenger's nursery. Mate, the only reason I do it is I need to turn right and turnips like yourself often won't let me out of the gutter. If he was in really *such* a hurry he could have overtaken, but instead he stopped 50 yards down – I was almost worried he was going to confront me but he wasn't there when I came out of the nursery.

Heading up the hill on Dewar Place with two other cyclists. There's a truck behind which is going slowly and keeping a good distance back from us. Driver of Morris & Spottiwood white van isn't having this, so overtakes us all and cuts back in to the left lane at the last second, only to immediately join the queue of traffic on Morrison Street which we all filtered past.

...was the driver eating her tea with a fork out of a tupperware container on her lap whilst driving along the Glasgow Road tonight.

Fortunately for her, my phone was tucked away in my bag else I'd have recorded it.

I did shine my front light into her car but she didn't seem too apologetic..

That last driver (grey car) looks like they really didn't care two hoots about your safety. I've a friend who would most likely have slapped the wingmirror as it shaved the handlebars....

Rob, I had to watch your video three times to finally spot the drivers overtaking the bus. Before then, all I was bothered about was the van.

I must really be inured towards the habits of the motorist's world. :-(
