Last night on Inverkeithing High St there was slow moving traffic all the way up. There is a painted Cycle Lane ~1 m wide and I counted 17 cars who occupied at least part of it as I went past. They must have had ~1.5m of clear space between them and the centre line.
A number of drivers saw me coming and inched further into the cycle lane "If I have to wait, then he so should too."It was sad, petty and quite surprising as people are generally considerate on that road when traffic moves closer. Disproportionate number of SUVS among them. Don't know if that says something.

@Chug I'm not sure what was going through that guy's head. There was a car behind me who had to switch lane to allow him to overtake a bus which was trying to move off.
@Arellcat interesting, I have cars/vans accelerate to pass me on the left here every day (most people seem to turn left here) so I'm pretty numb to that.
@Frenchy I like it. The basic features suit my use case very well. Easy to use, less faff than separate light/camera. Simple mass storage device for retrieving footage. Video split into 5 min sections so you only copy what you need.
However, I don't really use the more advanced features via the app due to a couple of quirks and the process being generally slow and a bit fiddly.
The editor is basic but functional. It only allows cropping, which is fine until your clip spans multiple files which you can't stitch together. You can save your clips on the phone/tablet so potentially you could fire up a more feature rich video editor after the initial cropping.
The Strava overlays look great. I've wanted to use them a couple of times but couldn't because the clock in the device drifts. To keep the time accurate you have to connect it to the device regularly, which I don't. The time on the device doesn't have to be out by much before your synced Strava data stops making any sense. If you were setting out to record a ride with your speed/HR/incline overlayed it isn't too much of a chore to fire up the app while you're eating breakfast. When you're passively recording your daily commute and may occasionally want to show how fast you were going, it isn't really worth it.
@paddyirish not the first time I've heard stories of driver's intentionally blocking cycle lanes. I had it happen to me once as part of a larger "I'm so angry for some reason" incident.
Makes me wonder if they'd do the same if they were queueing next to a bus lane with a bus approaching.

Cheers. That sounds good; I'm used to using command-line video editors anyway.
They claim the battery life is upto 10 hours, is that realistic? It's a non-removable battery, isn't it? Any issues with the weatherproofing? Any footage in the dark?
Posted 7 years ago # -
@Frenchy I've used it in wind, rain, subzero with no issues. Not really sure about the battery life. I charge it once a week and use it for 1hr a day (light on 50%) so the claim does seem reasonable. Battery is non-removable. There is footage in the dark on my channel, can't link it right now as I'm at work.
Linux command-line video editors? Then an extra quirk for you - I've been unable to get the device itself to work as a mass storage device in Linux. Removing the card to use in a reader is an easy enough workaround.

Huh, that's not so good. I've had no problems with the Fly6, so hadn't anticipated this being a problem. Thanks!

paddyirish - you always get one bike lane blocker in a queue but unusual to see them en masse. Some drivers think we are breaking the law by undertaking. I agree there is a risk in queuing traffic. Single occupancy cars are better as no-one can get out (!)
If I see a blocker I always just go onto right hand side but never bother engaging with them as their action is sometimes a considered provocation. Other times lanes are encroached by drivers busy on their phones as they edge along.

@laidback, that's what I would do when there is no cycle lane. Here cars were bumper to bumper moving at <10mph with nobody willing to give an inch.
At the time, I was reluctant to move to the right as it is a decent enough uphill and I didn't want to get trapped out there if the traffic sped up and, pigheadedly, I felt I should have been able to continue in the cycle lane.
Maybe I should have shifted right, but expect some of the drivers would have shifted right as well.

I really don't know what to say about this. Just what does it take to show you aren't fit to drive?

@paddyirish - yes, on an uphill stretch I would want to stay left / use the bike lane.
Quite right to expect it to be free.Posted 7 years ago # -
"Quite right to expect it to be free."
No such thing as "free"
Hardpressed motorists paid for that tarmac (and every other bit).

@stickman - thought I recognised the judges name. She was on the panel that refused to review the sentance for the motorist who killed Audrey Fyfe . http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scotland/10333991/Motorist-who-killed-two-cyclists-has-controversial-sentence-upheld.html

Holy crap - I just finished reading @stickmans article there about Duffus - Utterly ridiculous that this man is allowed his licence back. involved in deaths of 3 people all while driving recklessly then during this last ban was caught driving without insurance/licence (sure on a race track - but sounds like he'd been doing it for a while)
"In 2014, despite his ban, Duffus was caught riding a motorbike at Knockhill racing circuit in Fife, where one of the corners is named after him. Two off-duty police officers spotted him and he found himself back in the dock.
He escaped a conviction for driving while disqualified but was found guilty of driving without insurance and fined £300."
Unbelievable that he's able to get his licence back at all (the fact he WANTS it back tells us a lot...) .
Posted 7 years ago # -
I don't think the Knockhill thing was a conviction for riding on the track. You don't need a licence to ride there. I think he must have ridden his bike to the track on the public road.
This is clearly someone who should not have access to motor vehicles. If I were the Inland Revenue I'd assume his attitude to paperwork to be the same as his attitude to road safety.

"
He listened as his advocate Robert Frazer told how the ban had caused “a considerable degree of inconvenience” to his family.
Lady Dorrian replied: “That’s what it’s meant to do.”
Mr Frazer then said Duffus’s wife had to drive him to and from work every day – and presented testimonials to the court about his client’s “good character”.
"

"My client is guilty as sin but respectfully would prefer to not be punished because of how inconvenient he'll find the whole thing."
Posted 7 years ago # -
Unbelievable. He should never have got his license back after the second horrific incident. What do you have to do to be banned for life ?
Posted 7 years ago # -
I presume that's Allan Duffus of 'Allan Duffus Motorcycles' of Kirkcaldy?
Remind me to carry on not going there.
Posted 7 years ago # -
I presume that's Allan Duffus of 'Allan Duffus Motorcycles' of Kirkcaldy?
That seems likely, although the shop is "Alan Duffus Motorcycles", so either he or the Daily Record is spelling his name wrong.
Posted 7 years ago # -
I wonder if his customers realise he's killed 3 people?
And I wonder if Yamaha know?
"Alan Duffus Motorcycles is Scotlands only Exclusive Premier Yamaha Dealer"
Posted 7 years ago # -
... who is also Alan Duffus, proprietor of Park House B&B, Kinnesswood. One to avoid...
Quite how he managed to kill someone in a car by hitting it with a motorbike (the 1983 incident) and didn't kill himself, I don't know - must have been some speed involved. There's even less justice in that than one of Lady Dorrian's courtrooms.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Certainly looks like the same gentleman (Alan, vs Allan):
Posted 7 years ago # -
In 2 of the 3 death crashes Duffus caused, he wasn't actually convicted of causing the death (as if somehow these weren't linked).
@IWRATS - The driving without insurance at Knockhill was amongst pedestrians at the event which was a public place, but not on the road which was where he was disqualified from. As explained on motorbiketimes.comPosted 7 years ago # -
This is INSANE! and it's compounded with the "his family have been inconvenienced because he hasn't got a license", what about the victims families?? AND he's sells motorbikes!! What was the judge thinking?
Posted 7 years ago # -
I would not seek to defend his behaviour on the road but, as cyclists, I'm sure we are all sensitive to the press distorting a situation by not presenting the full facts.
He was found guilty of driving without insurance (whilst moving a bike that someone else was to be using on the track) but, as reported, believed he was covered by the event insurance.
That he was not was down to him not having signed in, an admin issue. It does not alter the fact but suggests an error rather than reckless intent.

Someone on a side street who'd cleared two wee peepholes on their iced up windscreen and thought that was enough. Wee lad on his way to school ran across the road in front of him without looking; car was going slow and the boy was never within 10m of the car, but it highlighted the utter laziness, selfishness and stupidity.

I just witnessed a black transit van squeeze a cyclist to the kerb at the pinch point outside the Scottish Widows building on Morrison Street. Cyclist was (rightly) having a "discussion" with the driver as they went towards Haymarket.

Not today's rubbish driving.... but....
This evening my bridge team has been drawn at start of national event to play against the person featured here. So I shall have "the pleasure" of sitting at a table with her for 2 hours. Imagine how I am looking forward to this. Not.
We're at Melville Bridge Club at 1 Pinkhill, 7.30pm start should anyone want to pop by and say hello to Tracy. (Bike parking poor tho!)

Not sure what I made of this but:
person driving car with a very small dog in their lap.
Unwise, or serious distraction?Posted 7 years ago # -
fimm - totally wrong - but will be approved of by some dog loving drivers. Not covered in HC?!
jules878 - just read about Tracy's 'incident'. In a hurry to get into the Porsche centre it seems and cut across the 77 year old knocking her off her bike causing fatal injury. That is covered in HC and one of the items in the Spokes video and booklet. Tragic.
