In the meantime, d'you want us to email our local Tesco saying we're never going to shop there ever again whilst they employ such careless/dangerous tubes as was propelling BD11 OKT around Bruntsfield this afternoon?

Speaking as someone who probably has this psycho as the local Tesco delivery driver, I am 100% in favour of trying to get him sent on an anger management course !

The bit about him driving just off your back wheel was bad enough and worth reporting on its own.

The whole knocking you off your bike is a whole new level of awfulness.

Bruntsfield Hotel has CCTV according to Streetview but the cameras look like they might be angled too far down to pick anything up beyond their car park.

Oh, and his number plate looks a bit like b*ll*ck.

Def call the Police and let them know a witness has come forward. After all, if you read in the paper next week that a tesco van hat hurt someone else up there how would you feel??
Put up with the inconvenience and report it asap mate.

Tescos do have tracking in their vehicles. They do take it very seriously. Since they installed tracking and started employin customer service reps to do deliveries instead of driving their accident frequency and insurance rates dropped.

So report it to Tesco. Explain when and where and they *will* take it seriously and deal with the driver.

Yikes. **Very very** unpleasant, but glad you're OK.

Just to endorse what others have just said, now knowing you have an independent witness puts the polis thing on an entirely different footing - at least in terms of evidence, and the chances of the PF taking it further (which in practical terms ought to make a difference to how the polis deal with it).

And yes. Get on to Tesco too.

    Hot bath, fine wine, pronto.

Pretty clear case of someone needing their licence away until they have either a head injury or a brain tumour that radically changes their personality for the better.

Here's a good way to think of it in my opinion:

You might not feel like it's really worth the hassle of following up, and after all, the witness could probably do without the hassle, and the driver's probably a nice guy supporting 15 starving kids and he was just having an off day, and only tried to run you down due to momentary inattention.

    BUT

How will you feel if you read in a month or a year's time of a cyclist killed under this guy's wheels? It would be difficult to explain why you didn't try to drive the message home now to the family of the deceased, wouldn't it?

Go for it. Your local councillors / MSP / MP will be pleased to offer you advice if the police try to give you the runaround too, and are only a writetothem away...

In fact, perhaps one of our resident policemen will be able to advise on the best course of action when an upstanding citizen finds himself in this position?

The response to my complaint from Lothian Buses:

"Thank you for your e-mail. I have received a note of your e-mail to this office regarding the actions of the driver of a Service 3 bus on 07 September 2012.

Here at Lothian buses we take great pride in the driving standard displayed by our drivers. We take road safety and the comfort of our passengers as a priority and we have a full support team to enable the drivers to achieve the highest standards. The Company invests heavily in Customer Care and Driver training and we have twice in recent year been voted the UK’s best bus Company, this accolade is awarded by the travelling public.

However, the actions taken by our driver, as you have described, fall short of what is acceptable from our staff.

As part of our driver awareness training Lothian buses filmed a short information film called the Shadow Cyclist Vs Bus the purpose of this film was to try and make our staff more aware of the needs of cyclists and to give them the road space required. One of the main comments received from our staff was surprise at the speed a cyclist can obtain.

With this in mind I have asked our Driving Standards officer to undertake a covert check of the driver concerned upon which the appropriate action will be taken to ensure that this driver is not involved in a similar incident.

Please accept my apologies for any distress that may have been caused and I would like to assure you that we do take this kind of complaint very seriously. "

My own view is as there are a surplus of drivers and people looking for work it is quite acceptable for people involved in this kind of incident to cease driving. Lets a raise the standard.... Fewer but better drivers. Just heard about this now and hope you're recovering.

Yep, no shortage of people who'd be glad to have a job as a safe and courteous delivery driver, rather than (as in this case) potentially losing the supermarket business from a well-networked, though small, section of the community.

With a witness I suppose they'll have to be careful not to try and whitewash it - wouldn't do to reply to the injured member of the public saying nothing's doing and then discover there's an independent account to the contrary?

I'm sorry to hear about this, recombodna.

I think if your witness is willing to talk to the police, you should contact them. The driver can't be allowed to get away with that. You could have been seriously injured or worse.

    Hope you're not too sore.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Having an outlet like this does make a difference. Incidents like this happen so quickly it's hard to get a grasp on what has happened to you. My knees were still shaking today. I've talked to a lawyer and I tried to track down my witness today but to no avail. Will email through the school forum though. I was glad someone else saw it as I can't quite believe it actually happened..... I am driving and cycling like a nun at the moment.... I'm expecting a phone call from Tesco tomorrow and I will take it from there. Though from the email I got from them they seem to take this sort of thing very seriously and rightly so . S

It is possibly useful that they have some tracking device on the van - presumably GPS - as this should be able to back up your story of his mad dash to leave the scene.

I say possibly because their device may not be that sophisticated.

Best result is if witness comes through. Good luck.

I've been following this thread since you posted about your incident, Recombodna. Really hoping you can track down the witness to take this forward and am wishing you a quick recovery.

The literal shrugging off of these sorts of incidents by the police, particularly when they have the potential to have been fatal, anger me no end. A stronger stance on things like this to make a point needs to be taken. A statement by L&BP expressing their condolences after fatal accidents make a mockery of the police's unwillingness/inability to do anything with non-fatal incidents.

Great to see Tesco and Lothian Buses taking these sorts of complaints so seriously. Will be interested to hear what you get back from Tesco, Recombodna.
