Someone drove into a lamppost on my street, leaving it not quite upright and with a cracked base.

A Forth Valley Division spokesman said: "The moral of this story is our officers regularly cycle to work and you never know when you might encounter a police officer."

new 20mph zones. Two instances of impatient drivers yesterday - no happy about sticking to the limit ;-
1. cycling along Russel road in the morning, car ahead of me doing around 20, car overtakes me then attempts to overtake the first car but has to pull in again sharply to avoid oncoming cyclist and car (just at council depot), then proceeds to toot horn at driver in front who's clearly going too slowly, then racing past , clearly going far faster than 20mph.2.Driving work's car round Castle Terrace at 20mph towards Lothian Road, behind another car doing 20, , the car behind us goes racing past both to make it to the red lights at Lothian Road just in front of us!

Was given the finger yesterday by a driver I pointed out had driven the wrong way down a one way street (new street - the various diversions at the moment and the disappearance of the no entry sign caused another two cars to indicate they were going to turn down but we're happy enough with my shake of the head.)
There is a sign with the motorbike flying over the car.

White van driver making angry gesticulations after I waved him past the end of a road around Magdalene something I which I was awaiting to emerge from, after indicating that I was going in his direction, there would not be enough room between him and the parked cars for me to go through and that I was accompanied by a six-year-old to whom I would prefer not to demonstrate pulling out in front of a vehicle with priority.

Is that the Forth Bridge? Railway bridge in the background?
Posted 7 years ago # -
Yes.

Either
"How on earth did they do that at 40?"
or
"Isn't it impressive how much momentum is carried by a car going at 40mph?"
or
"Just how fast were they driving...?"Posted 7 years ago # -
Probably the middle one, or could be the last one. If you think about it, you could probably get a car into that position at 10 or 15 miles an hour. So you've got lots of spare energy to add a flip or two as a flourish.

Crash involved a lorry - that's a lot of momentum / potential energy to add to the impact. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-39817040

The lorry was parked a little further along the bridge with another car and shocked looking passenger between them. There was no obvious damage to the truck to other car but as I was moving along the cycle path I can't be certain.
There was a shocked looking person in the passenger seat of the car chatting with police person, but perhaps they were just a witness.
I'm always amazed when cars manage to roll on Maybury Road and as they tend to do it coming off the roundabout I assume speed isn't the main issue. If a car doing 40 hits a pedestrian the chances of survival are grim so there is a lot of energy involved.Posted 7 years ago # -
Lorry driver fell asleep and drifted?
It's not something I've seen so much in the UK but during my various stints of continental driving I have found it common to see HGVs veering significantly out of lane.

Seems the Tory revival got all the toads of Toad Hall excited. Very assertive motorists. Guy emerged from the Meadows onto Buchleuch Place on the cycle path at a good lick in a car which was surprising.
Driver of a coach behind me at the Summerhall Junction as I waited to turn right made complex hand gestures indicating a desire to eat me I think.

@iwrats, yes lot of mental drivers as I returned from south side at lunch time. I was on an electric bike in my tweed suit, no helmet. Invincible. They cannot comprehend the thrust
Had pleasant chat with cyclist pegging me at traffic lights. He has two electric bikes. Same as the council

Some twerp either a) didn't see me in the lane I was cycling in on Calder Road and tried to pull into the space I was cycling or b) (and this is what I thought at the time) didn't like my lane position and swerved at me.
Should really have got the plate but ho, hum, what difference does it make?Posted 7 years ago # -
This is utterly unremarkable - we all deal with this every day, but I just got given this camera, so I thought I'd give it a go... bear in mind I have an 18 month old on the back, so the punishment pass at the end is particularly annoying, and I imagine that was for have the gall to overtaking them while they were parked up...

@algo: report it - it may seem an everyday occurrence but I reported a close pass and got a great response from the police. They want more incidents to speak to drivers about. If people start hearing family, friends, workmates got warnings from the police (and prosecutions soon) then they may start taking more care.

I think that's what might be called "entitled driving".
Let's assume they weren't considering you in any way (in a 'punishment pass' sense), it was certainly inconsiderate and impatient driving.
In light of the current close pass initiative, worth reporting.

I think you're right - I doubt there was any explicit malice. I have had previous with the vans of the fruit and veg shop driven by the same driver though. There was a lot of revving as it overtook me the second time, but maybe be that's just incompetence. It wasn't really the proximity of the passes that bothered me, more the necessity to get in front.

Similar incident to yesterday on the Calder Road - this time a taxi driver.

Angry male driver who shouted out of the window of his car as he was passing me on Strathearn Road that I should have pulled over to let him and the driver of the car in front of him by. I raised my right hand in apathy as I cycled at ~20 mph. Shortly afterwards, I caught up with both vehicles at the traffic lights at the junction with Marchmont Road... Looking in his rear view mirror, the man lifted his hand and tapped the side of his head with his index finger so I returned his gaze, lifted my hand and tapped the side of my helmet with my index finger in reply. The traffic lights turned green soon after this exchange; luckily he turned right as I continued straight ahead.

Probably some rubbish driving involved, on whose part remains to be seen
Slightly surprised/alarmed that it appears a pursuit was happening down a narrow, probably busy shopping street in the middle of the day...

Or not (as such) -

"A police car responding to an emergency call crashed into a car exiting a parking space on Raeburn Place"
You would expect a police car responding to an emergency to have siren/lights on and if so then bad driving is firmly with the person who moved out from a parking space regardless and into the police cars path!
Posted 7 years ago # -
You would also expect a person exiting a parking space to check before pulling out

Chris Froome "rammed on purpose by an impatient driver"
Posted 7 years ago # -
Had to complain AGAIN to Lothian busses about bus driving into ASL on full red light at the King's junction again. Driver seemed to think that because there were no cyclists in front of him, he could proceed.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Froome - that was in France!

The east-bound lane of Gilmore Place is blocked part-way along for some kind of road works, with prominent signs indicating to give priority to traffic coming from the King's Theatre, but as soon as a driver makes it through in the other direction then anyone behind itjust follows mindlessly regardless of what is coming the other way... Yesterday, an oncoming van driver came to a complete halt part-way through the gap to let me through safely; today, an oncoming car driver didn't bother stopping so I waved my hand in frustation which they didn't seem happy about.
