Lots of tooting at the Clermiston Road North junction this morning. Impatient driver behind someone who rightly decided not to proceed as he would not clear the pedestrian crossing outside Royal High school.

Ellersley Road again ground to a halt today.

There are temporary lights which drivers continue to drive through without the exit being clear so they enevitably blocked up the lights. Which is a shame as this stops the traffic heading the other way from clearing the obstacle just before the lights and so nobody can move.

    Except me ;-)

The answer was of course to get out of their vehicles and start moving the cones around (eliminating the safe walking route) on one side and mounting the pavement on the other because the car/bus/lorry is king :-(

Officers using lights and sirens chased the dangerous driver for about seven miles, from South Queensferry into Clermiston, where they were eventually told to back off due to the danger Mitchell was causing in a built-up area.

Mitchell, who has recently been employed by BMW, claimed he had been in an “emotional state” after visiting the graveside of a friend who had been killed in a motorcycle accident.

Update on Ellersley Road. This morning we had 3 workies directing traffic passed the (switched off) lights.

    Was flowing much better.

A quick response by the West team and developer to my (and possibly others) complaints yesterday.

@HankChief I got stuck in that in a big white van last week (returning to Enterprise at the Zoo) - the problem is that you can't see ahead far enough to know if you're going to get stuck in the lights section. (Unless you're in a big white van). Made even worse by the bus stop being just a few yards at the far end of the lights, so as soon as a 38 is going through, you just know that everything will get stuck.

Sounds like Judge Sean Morris should be cloned and installed in every motoring court in the country. Finally someone who gets it...

    http://metro.co.uk/2017/05/10/model-said-oh-my-god-youre-joking-to-judge-as-he-jailed-her-for-four-months-6628625/#ixzz4ggwKRXls

"Judge Morris told Katir: ‘You took off and drove like a lunatic through extremely narrow streets.
‘Anyone who drives like a lunatic when there are blue lights behind must understand that they put life at risk.
‘I’m reducing it [the sentence] because you are a mother, but that doesn’t give you a get-out-of-jail-free card.
‘The public need to know this. If people don’t stop when required to do so by police and choose to drive dangerously at speeds putting people at risk, then the courts will lock them up.’

Further quotes collated from other reports:

“I’ve just watched a terrifying video where you are flying around corners at 50mph where you wouldn’t know what was coming the other way, going around small roundabouts at 60 and doing 79 in a 30mph zone.
“You then tried to get away by going over some park land and you smashed into a house.
'I'm not bothered about your life. I'm bothered about innocent lives and a policeman's life. You are so lucky that you are not here on a manslaughter charge. You could so easily have been.'

    I've also just spotted:

    https://twitter.com/CourtNewsUK/status/862326881210773504

Driver who deliberately rammed a cyclist after he shouted at her for using her mobile phone has been jailed for three years

A woman who rammed a cyclist into a tree will give birth in custody after she was jailed for three years

The cyclist attacker (38) said: 'I love you mummy,' as she was led away and wants to know if mummy can be there when she gives birth

    Dear Lothian Buses,

I was just stopping outside the library on George IV bridge on my bicycle and as my foot went on the kerb I was startled to hear a very loud klaxon behind me.

I turned round to see your driver shouting at me and, I think gesticulating.

    Use of a vehicle horn is covered by rule 112 of the Highway Code;

The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

    while stationary on the road
when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am

I think the bus was stationary and the horn use was certainly aggressive. It served no purpose at all as there was no danger to be averted. I suspect your driver used it as a weapon to frighten me.

May I ask you to review the on-board footage at the time to see if your driver was acting according to your driving standards.

It was a real shame as your drivers on Minto Street today were exceptional, but I do not have their plates or fleet numbers. This guy let them down.

    Thanks

    IWRATS

@iwrats, shame indeed en route to roseburn today I had a driver fail to check before pulling out kind of leaving me with nowhere to go on west bit of Gorgie road or is it east bit of chesser. Nowhere near as bad as the taxi driver at saughton park roundabout who kept coming out of the lane despite seeing me on the roundabout coming off with the old priority which definitely left me nowhere to go.

On the plus side, roseburn primary school racks being very well used by bikes. Also route along George street then down to princes street then Waverley all went relatively smoothly. Can be hairy on a bad day tht route.

  13. A council pick up lorry driver passed me WAY too close on Lower Granton Road this afternoon and to rub it in pulled over kerwards before he was past. Only an emergency stop prevented me being knocked off.

He heard my shouts and stopped. Blamed me for not cycling in the gutter. Refused to believe a cyclist should never cycle in the gutter.

Bored, I pulled away in front of him (in a better primary!) a wee while later he overtook me perfectly. I looked into his cab and shouted "thank you"

He slowed sharply and pulled over, deliberately trying to knock me off. Shouted and swore that if I ever swore at him again, he'd drive over me. Clearly misheard my "thank you" shout -not that that excused his attempt at hitting me.

    Council have been emailed.

I'd inform plod too, but after spending an hour giving a (second) statement at Gayfield last night - after being deliberately hit 3 months ago, well, I don't know if I can be bothered.

I really must get a camera.

@Chrisfl - CCTV footage of that here: http://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/shocking-moment-woman-uses-car-like-a-weapon-against-cyclist-in-stoke-newington-road-rage-revenge-a3535346.html

    Terrifying.

@ECT - Hope you're all right. Hope you do manage to report it to the police as well, but quite understandable if you don't.

  15. Thanks Frenchy, I'm all good!

Its a real shame that proper dafties like this seem to be more common. I don't think I can go a month without encountering one.

The only one that ever really bothered me was the one (mentioned above) that I was speaking to Plod about. He did deliberately hit me (3 times) and I really thought he would get out his car and knock me out. I was pretty shaken for a few days.

I'd like to think that this council boy will be spoken to in a manner that makes him realise his livelihood is at stake. If that doesn't change his driving behavior, nothing will.

Horribly close pass last night courtesy of a black cab people carrier. Definitely a punishment pass for me having the audacity not to cycle on that bit of Fountainbridge where what appears to be a cycle lane suddenly becomes a great hummock of concrete and tarmac. It's dangerous enough having to contend with appalling road surfaces without that. I've had three deeply unpleasant taxi incidents in my commute this week alone. Haven't managed to get any numbers. Anyway, thanks for listening. Feel a marginally better now.

I was in outside lane from Haymarket Terrace going past station heading towards Clifton Terrace/West Maitland Street.

A large black car - RV15 RNJ - tried to squeeze past me in "my lane" and was so close that I had to pull over into the right hand lane (in which there was no traffic thankfully).

Black car reached 3rd place in queue at traffic lights (waiting for traffic from Dalry Road) one place before me.

And then achieved 5th place in queue at traffic lights awaiting turn to Torphichen Street.

I sailed past to reach the (surprisingly empty) ASZ.

His need to push past me seemed somewhat pointless, but perhaps he just hadn't seen me despite my flashing lights!

Today's rubbish attitude to other road users; chap driving slowly past me with his passenger side window down so that he could tell me to "Use the cycle path".

Not that there is a cycle path for me to use; that tarmac at the side of the road is what we call a pavement and it would be illegal for me to cycle on it.

Not one but two real elbow scrapers, first a faux-by-four Mercedes absolutely bombing it down Harrison Gardens and going very closely past me (with passenger in seat) — both inconsiderate round the corner from a school at 8.40am and utterly pointless given they ran into a clutch of too many cars attempting to negotiate the Ogilvie Terrace corner all at once. At home time, a white van in Lothian Street completely ignored me bearing right on approach to the roadworks at the Bristo Place junction and whizzed past, probably at well over 20mph. Do I need to mention I got to Tollcross before they did?

8:25 DDC Joinery van on Gillsland road (DDC Joinery Services) S?004 JWG, who pulled up alongside me , blowing horn and ranting, then proceed to try drive van at me but engine cut out so he got out to rant. I was cycling in a straight line on the road, just outside the parking bays on the left hand side of the road, Driver was ranting that I should have been on the other side of the line in the parking bays, but then was also ranting that I had swerved out into traffic from the left( parking bay) and into his way so due to some strangle quantum entanglement I appear to have been doing both at once. Either way annoying start to an otherwise lovely day. Bah

We got peeped at twice by white van drivers at the weekend. No-oe else had a problem. Just the white van drivers.

To be fair, @cyclingmollie, I don't think they always have a problem with cyclists. It's just a bit of fun mate, a bit of banter init to cheer up the passenger with his feet on the dashboard and only the Sun for entertainment.

Last night doing laps of Arthurs Seat going along (I think) queens drive (between meadowbank and parliament roundabout) I was pootling behind a set of cyclists and a wee red car doing bang on 20mph in primary position. At the curve a big 8 seater hackney tried to come around me without seeing 2 oncoming vehicles. He paused next to me obviously expecting me to move right over, which I of course did not do. I held my position completely and he was forced to almost stop and pull in behind.

Felt a bit petty, but hopefully taught him a lesson.

Jacko Builders white van impatiently overtook me eastbound on Granville Terrace to get to the red light in front of me, where he proceeded (quite deliberately by all appearances) to block both the ASZ and the wee feeder cycle lane. When I caught up with him at King's Theatre, he was indicating right but straddling the two lanes, blocking the left turn. This obviously left me lots of space to overtake him to get into the ASZ, while he desperately tried to shuffle rightwards as the filter light came on. At least it wasn't just cyclists he was inconsiderate towards.

And speaking of ASZs, there is definitely an Edinburgh driver mentality that they are only to be observed if there is a bike already in them, otherwise they're fair game. Lothian Bus drivers, who are reputed to be well trained, are frequently guilty of this behaviour.

Agreed about the ASLs. The bus drivers who really annoy me are the ones that stop with their wheels on the stop line, such that quite a lot of bus is in the ASL.... Grrrrrr.
