Tried to find the relevant legislation. Not found it yet, but found the exemption for speed limits:

No statutory provision imposing a speed limit on motor vehicles shall apply to any vehicle on an occasion when it is being used for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes [or for or in connection with the exercise of any function of [the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service]], if the observance of that provision would be likely to hinder the use of the vehicle for the purpose for which it is being used on that occasion.

Sec. 87 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Easy to believe the wording is similar for obeying traffic signs etc.

CityCircle coach squeezing me on St John's Road this morning...

They had nearly completed a good wide overtake but a right turning car ahead meant they came back into my lane before completely passed.

I spoke to driver at next lights, saying he should have indicated. He just shrugged.

Reminded me of their impatient driver in the Highlands on Sunday - who had 3 different overtakes of me and created quite a chatter in the peloton about the manner of their driving.

    Company got an email...

Re emergency vehicles: yeah, there's no requirement to be using lights/sirens when claiming traffic rule exemptions (and the police sometimes don't if they're trying to be sneaky).

Similarly, most emergency vehicles would turn of sirens when not needed to reduce the noise pollution. Apart from in NE England for a while, where we had standing orders to keep sirens on even when trundling through housing estates at 2am, after some idiot police driver killed a child.

Close pass from a private hire this evening who then pulled over right in front of me to drop off his passenger. Good opportunity to point out his close pass I thought. This duly done, I then turn left and start slogging up Dublin Street at which point the maniac taxi driver appears on my right having swerved right across the road to deliberately scare me. Have reported the incident and will be getting a visit from Scotland''s finest to elaborate. Sincerely hope it goes somewhere; after the horror of this week it beggars belief that someone would deliberately drive their 2 tons of metal directly at me.

Almost taken out by a left turning police car at the bottom of the Mound.

Apparently it's now ok to turn left there without looking or indicating if you have 'police' decals. And here was me thinking there's no left turn there.

Wasnt even a squad car, just some random blue estate with police written on the back.

The exemption from red signals for police etc is The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, Schedule 14,Part 1, paragraph 5, sub-paragraphs (4) to (6).

The silver private hire taxi driver who chose to cut across the Dundee Street cycle lane immediately in front of me, to turn left into the West Approach Road this morning at around 8.45am. I was going a fair pelt and it would have taken mere seconds for him to wait before taking the turn, rather than revving his engine and deciding to cut me up across the red marked up cycle lane.

  8. You'd think that given yesterday's tragic events, Lothian Buses drivers might think it wise to stay a little further back from cyclists rather than racing up and sitting a few feet from their back wheel on the horrendously-potholed and badly-patched Elm Row.

    But no.

Next time I have to use the bus I'm going to start filming on my phone as soon as the bus comes up behind a cyclist and reporting it if they fail to leave enough room to stop should the cyclist fall off / stop suddenly / swerve to avoid a pothole.

As per other thread, is it indeed illegal for coach drivers to also act as tour guides while moving? Big white unliveried coach with reg PSU 621 heading south on George IV Bridge past the end of Chambers Street last night - driver was wearing a headset with mic, and gesturing down chambers street - while looking down, not at the road in front of him - as he passed the junction (I was waiting to turn right). Clearly giving a tour guide talk.

Edit: have used @Tulyar's info and indeed it is not okay. Emailing info...

@threefromleith - Lothian Buses are all CCTVed, they should be able to act on a complaint even without your footage.

I have to admit I'm still boiling about the death at Princes Street. Cycling in a very unforgiving way.

Lady tried to turn right out of Liberton Dam up Gilmerton Road on the red light in a faux by four when I had green. Rode right in front of her, made her stop or knock me off. Left her stranded in the middle of the road.

Sitting at the lights at Hope Park Terrace a car just drove off and turned left from the right hand lane up Causewayside through the pedestrian phase. Got the plate, can't believe phoning it in would do any good though.

"Thank you for your email. There is no indication to suggest that the driver was given a tour guide – it could have been that he was speaking to his control room.

However if you would like to make a complaint regarding the manner of this driver – ie not concentrating on the road, then I would suggest you head down to your local police station to make this report."

No indication except my eyes, which were there.

Put like that it would be rude not to.

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1981/14/section/24

    allows for a fine of level 2 on the standard scale (£500) should any driver fail to follow these regulations;

    http://legislation.data.gov.uk/uksi/1990/1020/made/data.htm?wrap=true

    (1) A driver shall not, when a vehicle is in motion, hold a microphone or any attachment thereto unless it is necessary for him, either in an emergency or on grounds of safety, to speak into the microphone.

    (2) Subject to paragraph (3), a driver shall not, when a vehicle is in motion, speak to any person either directly or by means of a microphone.

A few days ago I realised I hadn't seen a driver using their phone whilst driving for a while. I think I just wasn't paying attention to it - I've seen 8 in the last two days.

McGills coach driver who was tailgating a cyclist on Princes St - worryingly close behind.

The tragedy of last week haven't changed behaviour.

I doubt anyone will recognize this cyclist but this looked way too close:

Whilst waiting at a red light at the Wisp/Newcraighall Road junction, a right-turning driver cut off a couple of oncoming cyclists. I swore (instinctively), which the driver heard through their open window. I was told to shut up.

Then two drivers overtook me dangerously on Lasswade Road, heading down the hill towards the bypass. Wondered if they were punishment passes for not being on the shared use path, but neither was particularly close to me (the oncoming traffic wasn't given the same courtesy).

I posted a while back about a couple of men in a flatbed transit type thing who cut in front of me, nudging me aside. When I went to report I was advised that I could end up facing a counter accusation and, there being two of them and one of me, a lack of corroboration on my part would mean their account could well be believed.

As a result I dug out the camera which I haven't used in a while. Since then I have reported and submitted two very close passes on video to the #OpClosePass. Feedback on these is that when spoken to, both drivers (2/2) alleged all sorts of behaviours were demonstrated by me (shouting, swearing, all over the road etc) until they were then told there was footage, and shown said footage. I presume there was then an awkward silence since absolutely none of that is true.

I was pretty shocked by this. I would have expected them to either not recollect it or have a misguided sense of safe distance but for both to come out with false and malicious counter claims...

I would strongly recommend if you don't currently use a camera to invest in one. At best it could be your word vs theirs, but add a passenger to the mix (or a car-sympathetic judge) and the truth will be buried very quickly. Thanks to both the police officers who have dealt with these incidents - both very helpful and supportive.

An articulated lorry turning right into Gilmore Place at the KT junction this morning. The driver was far too optimistic about being able to clear the hatched box following a bus and another car in time, with the predictable result that he ended up in the middle of the junction once the green came on for traffic from Gilmore Place. Getting stuck in the cycle box between a bus and a left-turning lorry is never pleasant but it's even worse when you also have to cycle round the trailer because the whole junction is blocked.

The coach parked this morning on the corner of Princes St & Hanover St, forcing me to take an unsafe angle across wet tram tracks

Looked like he was letting a few passengers out to pick up some stamps or some such. Far more important than anyone else's safety

@stressed1976 - the definitive guide is given on the other thread.

    http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=17633&page=7#post-250404

In simple terms call 101 and report it.

    Good luck.

@stressed1976, perhaps just report it and get an incident number? In an update to my post of 5 days ago regarding a deliberate punishment close pass. Seems the reg and description of the private hire checked out (SM07 AVB) but unfortunately the CCTV where it happened didn't. Despite that the PC said they had enough to speak to the driver and let him know what they would have done had there been CCTV evidence of the incident. They did seem to take it pretty seriously, indeed they mentioned operation close pass, which was reassuring. Better than nothing I thought...

Lots of drivers who had failed to see (or maybe just chose not to) the large 'road closed' and 'diversion' signs at the Novotel on approach to Forrest Road from the west today. Cue a large queue of vehicles waiting to u-turn using the old entrance to the infirmary or take a more creative approach to the problem of Forrest Road being shut for no very obvious reason, e.g. take advantage of westbound traffic stopping for the pedestrian crossing, drive the wrong way along the one-way lane towards the waiting traffic, then nip across the pedestrian island.

Man texting whilst waiting at the lights at the junction at the bottom of Minto Street. He was driving a courtesy car. I couldn't help but wonder if these two facts were related.
