And don't forget to photograph cuts and bruises.

The standard of driving experienced on today's commute was really low, too many "incidents" to list. Motorists were incompetent, inconsiderate and impatient.

I took the short way in on Gilmerton Road today due to the rain. It's not nice especially in the rain due to the poor road surface. I'll have to lower the level of bad weather that drives me to come in the short way as opposed to quieter but longer routes.

@amir - Probably teaching my granny to suck eggs here, but Lasswade Road is normally much nicer than Gilmerton Road, and not much longer. I take Gilmerton Road when there's heavy rain to avoid going down the steep bit of Kirk Brae in the wet, but you may trust our brakes more than me.

@frenchy from Gilmerton Station Road, Newtoft Road or Ellen's Glen?

TBH it may just be the day - no one likes rain (even motorists with roofs and radio 2). But the surface is sketchy going downhill.

I do take Lasswade Road on the way home sometimes when I can be bothered with Kirk Brae (or Orchardhead Rd) but the surface up top is worse than the return on Gilmerton Road.

Newtoft Street, of those two options. Taking Gilmerton Dykes Road avoids the long queue at the west end of Gilmerton Dykes Street which occasionally occurs (I enjoy the descent past The Murrays, as well).

Ellen's Glen Road probably just gives you the worst of both routes.

I thought that too. It was mostly fine heading out along the A70, but so much traffic on the A71 past Hermiston and heading into town, and drivers not really looking where they were going. The rain got heavier as I approached the Calder Road/A720 roundabout, which was particularly unpleasant today.

Kids and I waiting to cross at ped crossing on Dalkeith Road and just after the green man come on, so it had been red for a good 5 seconds, a blue Audi SN17 YCB drives straight through, I gesticulated at the rear of the car but he was too busy looking down at his phone. Sigh.

"he was too busy looking down at his phone"

One of those situations where it would be useful to beam a message straight to their phone with some line-of-sight/low range technology. "You nearly killed a family of three at that red light you ran".

Driver of a British Gas van tonight paying more attention to his phone than to driving.

Yesterday, in a long line of people passing me slowly and with a decent amount of space on Kirk Brae, this guy felt the need to rebalance the cosmos (Apologies, I swear loudly, and I forgot to rotate the lens on the camera, so the front view is vertical): https://youtu.be/nnjdQNADB1s

Around 5.15 this evening the driver of a white Ford Fiesta accelerated towards some people crossing Queensferry St outside Ryan's Bar, tooting her horn repeatedly to get them out of the way. She then turned down Hope St Lane, but not before beeping her horn, revving her engine and screaming out of her window at a guy scooting his bike along the pavement who was crossing the lane.

Totally unfit to have a driving licence.

Posted a few weeks ago about poor driving whilst using a Mobike in Manchester. One instance was a bus driver who accelerated and overtook me as I stopped at a traffic light which had just turned amber.

I remembered the VRN, so complained to First Buses. They got back to me saying that they can't identify the driver from the VRN, only from the route number+time+location. This strikes me as odd.

  13. Well, at least they are apologetic...

"Thank you for your recent contact in regards to the driving standards you have witnessed on the 27th July 2017.

Perhaps its just me, but there was a lots of impatient dangerous driving this morning on the way into work, noticeably more than usual. Not nice to cycling in.

Middle aged driver of SL10EJX blue Hyundai i30 heading West along West Mains Rd spent the whole way from Cameron Toll to Charterhall looking up and down at his phone. His eyes were off the road and on the phone at least 50% of the time

Chances are his phone switched multiple cells on that trip which corroborates the journey and rough speed, and if he sent any texts during that time, then coupled with your witnessing, surely that's a nailed down prosecution?

A bin lorry being driven from East Parkside into the wee spur opposite the end of the Innocent, completely cutting the corner in a way which would have had dire consequences for anyone who was aiming to pull up on the correct side of the road at the line between the block-paved/tarmac sections.

Private hire vehicle in a queue of stationary traffic opposite St Michael's church on Slateford Rd decided to pull a 3-point turn, forcing me (filtering on the inside) to pull up sharply as he reversed straight across my path. If I had been filtering on the outside (as I often do - there's a bus stop) or a second or two earlier on the inside, I suspect I'd have been SMIDSYed.

So because it was an out-group (an OAP), it was the OAP what done it, not the car itself...

Newspapers should do background checks on all drivers that crash to find out if they are cyclists or not.

Then they could write the headline "Cyclist crashes car into..."

This morning: "Highway maintenance" truck driver who undertook me via the bus lane (illegally) as I was driving east past the Plumb Center on Gorgie Road (I was keeping to the 20 limit), and then they illegally turned right up Robertson's Avenue. Or are highway maintenance workers allowed to ignore the rules of the highway?

Someone's decided to rearrange a railing on Gilmerton Road using their car. Police in attendance, but the car is blocking the northbound lane.

    Edit: near Liberton primary.

Last night I met Ballistic Bob, previously of Chewin' the Fat fame and now hangs about near Easter Road stadium, shouting abuse and brake-checking anyone who prevents his prompt access to the red lights.

He'll be gaining speedy access to a heart attack at this rate.

    Bizarre one, wasn't it?

Pretty sure it was here. The car was spun round perpendicular to the road, facing west. So either the car was facing that way when it hit the railing, or it was going fast enough for the back end to spin round 90 degrees when the front left of the car hit the railing.

Car and railing both gone this morning.

Yes, that looks like the spot. I wondered if it could be a Satnav crash as it wouldn't be the first time a motorist has tried to drive up a footpath and I think they could only have gone into it head on.
