The driver who overtook me on Gilmore Place into oncoming traffic, presumably after taking umbrage to the fact that I used the bike lane and ASZ on Tarvit Street to get past them while the lights were red. I did try to remember the numberplate, but didn't quite manage. Something along the lines of SH30 TWZ which was a small, red SUV type thingy.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that Decorum Decor don't also practise Decorous Driving. Not rubbish though.

Today's rubbishness came from all the drivers whose side windows have fogged up so will happily drift sideways into your lane as if you're not there. I swear the number of people that did that to me this morning is unnaturally high.

Unlikely to be SH30 - that would be a car registered in 2030, and we're not quite there yet...

Since the new registration number system started in 2001, only vehicles registered in 2010 can have zero as the second digit (10 or 60).

@ejstubbs aha, thanks! SH60 TWZ is indeed a red Citroen.

I don't normally post on this thread as I see so much of it. This one, however made me Laugh Out Loud.
Kirkliston: Eastbound at about 20mph in a 20mph zone approaching the bear left turn onto Burnshot Road. I can hear the sound of an accelerating engine as a blue SUV attempts to overtake before turing left. There is clearly no time for him to do it, so he goes flying past me, indicating left and is going so fast he has to overshoot the junction. Perhaps to his credit, he didn't attempt to left hook me, but I suspect he wouldn't have made it anyway. He must've done a U-turn because he went past me about half a mile later, while I was still laughing. MGIF!!!

This guy appeared to be using his car to make a point.

I was confused why he didn't move back left after the pinch point until he shouted out the window about the cycle lane. Positioning advice from the guy who crossed into the cycle lane at the pinch point and is currently parked in the middle of the road.

@Rob - typically irritating behaviour. I wonder in what other contexts people who have no experience or knowledge about a subject feel they are entitled to shout ill-informed advice. I think I might go out later and shout at some tree surgeons and offer them some fashion advice.

I have had enough of my very very short school run with the kids up Warrender Park Road - I am going to video it next time - the behaviour of some the drivers (many of whom are parents of kids at either the high school or the primary school) is reprehensible - it is an awful rat run. On Tuesdays I give my eldest a "backie" on the pannier rack - some may say this is irresponsible and that's an argument for another day - but a parent almost killed her this morning as we turned off the road. She accelerated to pass us and at the last minute realised there wasn't space and performed an emergency stop. Large white audi which I will recognise again but didn't get the plate.

We'd be left with a shorter list if we ask in which cases people don't talk about subjects they have no experience in.

Letter sent to the headmasters of James Gillepsies (primary & secondary):

    Dear Sir,

I am writing to report a serious incident that I witnessed outside the school on Friday 24th November 2017 at 08:38.

A boy in the age range 10 to 14 (along with some others) was walking to school, heading west along the south pavement of Warrender Pk Rd. He proceeded to cross the gated driveway entrance to the area currently being used a car park in the high school grounds (off Warrender Park Road, opposite Marchmont St). As he crossed, a small white council gritter (or bin?) lorry exited the car park through the blind gate. The driver saw the boy at the last moment, directly in front of them and applied the brakes very hard. So much that you could see the cab bouncing up and down afterward. The boy took fright and jumped back, but as he was in the centre of the front of the lorry by this point, there is no way he would have been able to escape had the lorry not braked. It was a very close call indeed - less than 1 foot away from being hit. Even I took a sharp intake of breath it was so close.

The "car park" in question has a high stone wall, gate and the exit is blind on to the pavement where hundreds of school children cross every day. In the original plans for the high school, this area was designated as "disabled parking only", yet it seems to have been misappropriated as a general purpose car park (and seemingly a service vehicle entrance as well).

In my view, it is unacceptable to have vehicle movements through this gateway during school entrance & exit times. It is an accident waiting to happen.

To prevent a future accident, please could you do whatever necessary to return this "car parking" area to its original purpose i.e. disabled parking only and ensure that the gates are kept locked during school entrance & exit times.

Please could you let me know your thoughts on this matter.

    Your sincerely,

    nedd1e_h

And the responses from the headmasters:

    Dear,

Thank you for letting me know about the near miss below. I have passed this information to the High School. My understanding is that the car park is now required (both primary and secondary staff use this car park as both school staffs have grown in number) We cannot choose the times of council contractor waste uplifts unfortunately so children will need to be reminded about this being a road junction. We will remind children at school assemblies and I will remind parents in the school newsletter that this is a road junction and children need to treat it as such. In particular there will be delivery lorries and waste contractors’ vehicles using this entrance and caution needs to be exercised with these.

Thank you again for reporting the near miss

    and

    Dear,

Thank you for drawing this matter to my attention. We will look into what further measures can be taken – especially in these darker mornings – to improve safety in and around the campus. I have also been in touch with the headteacher at the neighbouring Primary School to raise awareness.

So, essentially, it's up to children to avoid being squashed? Fffffr..

@unhurt - Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

As I said in my letter, vehicles exiting the driveway cannot see pedestrians and the pedestrians cannot see vehicles. And the pavement appears somewhat continuous.

I see many adults crossing it who don't bother to look, as looking properly actually involves stopping (with hundreds of other kids/parents running up behind you), then peering round the wall.

    See: https://goo.gl/maps/6N2VqUNxajA2

Imagine if this incident were reported as a "Health & Safety at Work" nearly-killed accident and the relevant H&S procedures applied. What would happen then?

I'm so flabbergasted by the reply from the one headmaster, that I can't even think how to begin to respond.

    Any ideas...?

    <Edit>

And by the power of Google, here's a lady demonstrating how to peer around the wall, while allowing the baby/buggy to come into the line of fire: https://goo.gl/maps/2GwSor3uLxy

@Rob: I was confused why he didn't move back left after the pinch point until he shouted out the window about the cycle lane.

You didn't feel it worthwhile pointing out that the road markings on his side obliged him to give way to oncoming vehicles?

@ejstubbs I sure did! Unfortunately that was about 4 hours later and I was at my desk.

I guess in his mind they were both car lanes and he's more entitled to use them than someone on a bike. I encountered someone a few weeks ago who appeared to want to remain in the right hand lane for the entire distance between two of the pinch points, eventually moving over around the half way point where we met.

@ejstubbs I misunderstood what you said so the above probably doesn't make much sense.

I don't think priority through the pinch point was the issue here. At the time I thought he was simply a "get in the cycle lane" nut and had purposefully moved slowly into/through the pinch point in order to force me over. When I yielded instead he had to make his point another way.

On further reflection I suspect he was caught in two minds about whether he should go or not and blamed me when he made the wrong call. Maybe if I'd been in the cycle lane we could've gone through together and neither of us would've had to slow down.

Tailgating driver of Gordon Bow Ltd Vauxhall Corsa Van who decided to follow less than a car's distance away from the little ones in the bike trailer around Silverknowes Roundabout this morning, then aggressively rev his engine when politely asked for more room. https://youtu.be/13px0DzzSqs

Now, how do I get that video to play without having to follow a link?

I think this is done automatically if you link to "youtube.com" rather than "youtu.be". I think.

Have you complained to Gordon Bow?

Just had a wee trip to Glasgow for a thing in Hillhead. Such a nice clear cold day I took the bike over on the train rather than use the underground. I may not complain about Edinburgh driving for a few days. Yikes! Did enjoy the short, confusing but restful bit of segregated cycle route past the temple on Berkeley Street, but not getting close passed by several city buses, one coach and many, many cars.

At least he drove through the pinch point really slowly and didn't swerve around the speed cushion. Unfortunately, I was already committed to stopping by the time I could tell so it didn't exactly make any difference.

Don't taxi drivers risk their licences if they get reported to the police?

My understanding (which may be wrong), is that they'd have to do something seriously wrong to lose their licence. Probably dangerous driving conviction levels of wrong, although a build up of more minor things may well be enough as well.

In my effort to encourage harmonious relationships, I stopped on St John's Road to point out to the driver of Edinburgh Judo's tiny car to point out he only had 1 brake light working.

All smiles and thumbs up :-)

The car in front was another tiny Edinburgh Judo car, this time the driver was eating out of a bowl in lap with a spoon.

A scowl from me and a polite word which got a reply of 'I was only doing 2mph... I've finished it now... etc'

I hope they compare notes when they get where they're going.

The drivers of those Judo cars live round the corner from me. Despite their size they are often on the pavement...
