Overtaken by a van driver on a bend, who then slowed down and moved left to negotiate a speed cushion, apparently oblivious to the fact that I was still there, not quite overtaken yet. He then pulled in outside the same shop I was heading for, didn't find a parking space so drove right onto the pavement diagonally from the corner, across the dropped kerb.

I got to the door of the shop first, naturally, thought about saying something like 'that was a bit of a squeeze there' but having seen his parking performance, decided against. I even held the door for him, although I did think about starting to pull it closed as he was half way through to see how he liked it. I don't think he even registered I was the cyclist he had passed 30 seconds before

@sallyhinch, that would have tested my zen. I was close to losing t with the various taxis on Friday but employed very powerful mindfulness techniques

It was cowardice as much as anything kept me quiet, TBH. I couldn't see the conversation ending well and I wasn't frightened enough to raise it out of anger.

11 this morning (Sunday) - in theory the road should be shut to traffic. This looks like nothing - but it was really scary to pass at this speed this close. I was going lamentably slowly admittedly but I did not enjoy this at all (EF17 YRT)

Grr. There's a good example of someone who simply does not give a toss about anyone except himself. That's a max of 18 inches between the bike and the wing mirror. EF17 YRT ? Report...

@algo, you appear to have had a police officer witness the pass as well!

Drop a dime on that dirtbag. Police matter without a doubt.

If car not meant to be in the park won't they do him or her for that too?

@iwrats "dirtbag" - are you really Clint Eastwood behind that name?

Clearly the driver wasn't fooled by the police outfit for some reason ...

    @iwrats "dirtbag"

Is the idiom not colloquial for this part of the planet's surface?

It's sad that your daughter already has the resigned look of "another close pass" but the start of the video when she's looking around her nonchalantly made me smile.

I'd be tempted to tweet that to Historic Scotland and copy in all & sundry

@algo I remember passing you at the start of the climb ( on my bike). I said hello. I remember this car racing past. Also on the descent a green/blue Volvo estate hammering past. Almost caught it up at the Commie Pool. Wanted to ask how the 20 limit was working for him. Anyway I found myself thinking again why is this road not shut on Sunday and why is the speed limit ever ever enforced in the park. I have had too many high speed close passes in what should bea leisure facility.

I thought the climb up Queens Drive was shut on a Sunday ? I remember the barriers at the bottom being closed, is this no longer the case ?

Terrible pass algo. Doubt the polis will do anything though given past episodes.

"11 this morning (Sunday) - in theory the road should be shut to traffic."

"I thought the climb up Queens Drive was shut on a Sunday ?"

Am confused by this - it may occasionally be closed for events, but the High Road otherwise remains open as far as I'm aware. From the (mis)managers' website (my emphasis):

    "Park roads
    Sunday road closures
All roads in the park (except the High Road and to access car parks) are closed every Sunday, from:

8.30am, re-open for 6pm in summer (late March/early April until late October)
8.30am, re-open for 4pm in winter (late October until late March/early April)
The High Road is also closed every night in winter from 3.30pm and will re-open each morning, if it safe do so, at 8.30am."

Many thanks all for the empathy and understanding. The gate was open at the bottom - I don't know if this means the car was really committing an offence or not. Unfortunately the polis are unlikely to do anything about this given my previous experiences but I may well put it in anyway and will probably follow @HankChief's suggestion (any help as to exactly who "all and sundry" should be welcomed :-))

@GDR thanks for the greeting - I hope we said hello back - what bike were you riding? I am still recovering from injuring my back so am even slower than usual. I usually find it a very cheery experience going up there - most people overtaking us on bikes and greeting us on the way past, and my lamentable speed meaning we often get into races with people walking up - I am very grateful for this as it usually spurs my daughter on to actual push on the pedals :-)

My mistake, I've not been round Queens Drive on a Sunday for a while. It definitely SHOULD be closed !

Historic Environment Scotland seem to operate two main twitter accounts:

The former seems more appropriate for this.

Well, with 2 independent witnesses, and video evidence of careless driving, I'm sure the police will be enthusiastic to put it forward for prosecution.

    Right?

@algo you did indeed say hello! I was the rather large person on a titanium kinesis bike. I was wearing a blue jacket. I also always say hello to folk but find it amazing how many people just blank you. I also go fairly slowly so perhaps I am not deemed to be a proper cyclist!

Overtaken this evening whilst I was exceeding maintaining the 20mph speed limit on Mayfield Road. Utterly ubiquitous, and not worth posting about, except the vehicle in question was a police car, so presumably was being driven by a police officer

@algo - that road should as you say be treated as a privilige for people to use powered vehicles on but sadly the petrolhead community use it as the sunday cross town shortcut. No doubt they blame HS for putting gates across lower road.
Other users are car assisted dog walkers and loch side picnicers.
I rarely take people up there as if person is on a trike we have to just keep in middle of road till a lay by gives safe space to go by.
People though will try and intimidate as it's stressful driving at 6mph when you've got a dog to walk!

We had a respite when the road got frozen so considered too dangerous to drive. HS kept barriers closed on at least two Sundays in Jan. Cyclists went round barrier and had safer time despite the ice. People also ran and walked away from revving engines.
For a while it was almost like a park.

Close pass from the driver of a bin lorry this morning. I had to slow down significantly, and the driver coming in the other direction actually had to stop to let the bin lorry driver complete his manoeuvre. I was overtaking a stopped bus at the time, and being hemmed in on both sides by large vehicles was rather uncomfortable. Anyone know the appropriate email address to send complaints to?

Also, lots of drivers hadn't cleared the snow from their vehicles' roofs this morning.

@Frenchy One of my cycling colleagues got a face full of snow from the roof of a passing car. He was not impressed.
