That article which predicts that in clogged up city centre's cars to be going less than 16 mph by 2027 which is less than the strava average for male cyclists

Starts to fade out in the boldness of typeface just at the point where it starts to get ludicrous, almost as if the pay wall sensed its idiocy

FFS what do the torygraph writers think is clogging up city centres? Why are bus lanes called bus lanes?

(I am just filling in the bit that IWRATS could not bring himself to continue with.

By “optimising traffic light sequences”, they mean optimising MY journey at the the expense of someone ELSE’s journey.

And often someone else’s journey is a more space-efficient mode, e.g walk, bus

More of the article to read here, if you can bear it:

We're laughing, but that article is why Leith Walk is getting dredged and enclosed.

    YES!

This is exactly what traffic flow exponents (apparently) fail to understand.

Essentially impossible, unless it’s agreed that certain routes have significant pruiorities over others and that these main routes only intersect with a flyover...

my hometown has one, and only one street with synchronised lights. if you stay on the speed limit, you get a full set of greens--speed, and you have to keep stopping. it's a wide street, so this is a good way of stopping speeding. but i can think of other streets in town where better driving could be managed with this, but it's never been expanded, not sure why--canadians are more car-centric than europeans.

"As soon as I got home I went onto Google Streetview to check there *was* actually a give-way there the car was supposed to be stopping at..."

am i right that they actually exited that street from the wrong lane (4 seconds)? and it is a side street, so you had right of way?

    @the canuck - yes.

(This afternoon I pulled exactly the same manoeuvre (whilst cycling) as the driver in that video. I obviously checked that there wasn't anything coming, but the layout of the junction and the cars parked opposite do mean it's easier to do what the driver did.)

@canuck the term is "green wave" and apparently the UK discouraged it in the past!

Faux-by-four turned left off Leith Walk into Pilrig Street and into me, because his green light meant he could "go go go" and the fact there were still pedestrians crossing was of no concern to him.

The driver of an orange Biffa bin lorry turning left out of Queen St into Hanover, while holding a cup of coffee.

One handed driving of 15-odd tonnes of heavy machinery round a tight and crowded street corner. What could go wrong?

@Frenchy No but that wasn't for lack of trying. Inches.

Man in a fluoro tabard in a car leaving this opening onto Croft-an-Righ on Sunday morning was looking to his left but didn't look to his right, endangering the largest wingpiglet on our way to Skelf. I didn't have the camera running so was going to pop over to see who owns it and if they have CCTV.

@wingpig - I think that's owned by HES, used as storage space or something.

Re green wave: I swear that when 20mph went in (either the City Centre or North phase) they re-did the lights along Queen Street and Lothian Road to timings that worked for cruising at 20mph in light traffic. I might be imagining it, but I do remember seeing something about traffic light timings in a relevant press release.

I drove along Queen Street from Albyn Place as far as Queen Street Gardens East on Saturday evening and I did notice that the traffic lights seemed to be timed to allow 20mph traffic to move freely. Starting from the lights at the bottom of North Charlotte Street, I had a clear run (apart from one driver stopped at the kerb about 50m ahead of my turning - but the more sedate traffic made pulling out to pass them a lot less stressful than it would have been in the past).

Driver in front of me was a few seconds slow of the mark when the lights changed to green, so I wasn't at all surprised to see the glow of a phone in their lap. Exchanged glances with them. Then they swerved at me. Like, *at* me.

Be careful out there. South Edinburgh has some very naughty people.

While there is no evidence of the cause of death I have to assume that the sparrowhawk(?) carcass on Maybury Road would not be there if it wasn't for the driving. :-(

I guess there will be fewer dead pigeons in my garden this year.

That's sad but there's a healthy population of sparrowhawks in Edinburgh. Another bird will move in to the territory quickly if it was an adult that you found.

The last count had thirty five territories inside the bypass.

"I drove along Queen Street from Albyn Place as far as Queen Street Gardens East on Saturday evening and I did notice that the traffic lights seemed to be timed to allow 20mph traffic to move freely."

that would make sense--I had to go from West End to Leith and went along Queen St. The first time, I felt like i hit every red going--it was a windy day and i couldn't get any speed.
the next time, i got green lights all the way nearly to the roundabout, when some nefarious pedestrians had the cheek to press a walk button...

Whilst pedestrianising, I was waiting to cross Ferniehill Drive at an uncontrolled crossing. Long queue of slow traffic, so I was expecting someone to stop and wave me across, but instead a driver stopped directly in front of the crossing point. I crossed in front of their car, since this was the shorter way and I thought there was no possible way they couldn't see me, but when I was right in front of them, they started moving forward. They stopped when I shouted at them, and then waved their hand to suggest I should have gone round behind them. I offered them some directions in return.

They then drove down the wrong side of the road to get to the front of the queue.

non-scientific observations have led me to conclude that most drivers don't realise that they aren't allowed to stop over ped crossings.

Driver of large blue car turned right in front of me at the Slateford Road / Chesser Avenue junction while I was standing on the pedals and accelerating hard - leading to much breaking, swerving and swearing from me.

There were roadworks on York Place last night with a tar lorry and a fire to melt the bitumen or whatever it is. Anyway, traffic down to one lane. If *you* saw a workman with a giant cauldron would you (a) slow down as you passed the roadworks or (b) accelerate through and nearly ram the cyclist in front?

Massive white merc just rolled out of The Pitz five a side at sighthill in front of me. He looked at or through me then crossed the carriageway, wide turning circle, nice and slow and off he pootled towards Edinburgh. I was very happy yo doff my cap
