I once saw an idiot drive straight through a red light
Once every couple of years I stop at a green light for no reason. Total brain failure. It'll get me killed eventually.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Didn't witness the bad driving, but a bus stop on Clerk Street in Loanhead demolished by a car on (I think) Thursday night. Fortunately it happened at night, with no one at the stop.
Just back from a few laps of Arthur's Seat. Forgot it was the Easter holidays... Most driving was about as good as I would expect (i.e. barely). I even got some friendly hazard flashes when I pulled in to let cars past when there was space.
However, there was one incident. Just after I'd past the steepest bit going uphill, I heard a car speeding up behind me (so he'd just got there, I hadn't held him up all the way up the hill). I was trying not to leave enough space so that no one would sneak past on the narrow bits. I was trying to communicate this to this guy, who by now was revving up alongside my back wheel. But he clearly though there was plenty space, or just didn't care if he knocked me over. So he squeezed past, and even wound down his window to shout 'Get on the cycle path, you silly mare!'. Note that there was a passing place less than 5 metres ahead...
I would not have been super surprised by this behaviour during a rush hour commute. But this was an old man, in the car with (I assume) his wife and grandchildren, presumably out on a nice day up Arthur's Seat. How can anyone be so angry??
For info, Mike Hosking is maybe best described as a Kiwi Piers Morgan-Lite.
@claire3000006
Cycling uphill in park and getting bullied by driver? So typical and makes me so angry.
He referred to a cycleway - did he mean the pavement?
Driving in park on upper Dunsapie road is a non essential privilege and should be withdrawn? (discuss - there is another thread on this).
Less able visitors could be driven up on an e-bus every 15 mins. Over to HS!
Yes, I generally avoid it at weekends for that reason. Got caught out by the holidays. Before work on a weekday morning is perfect, until the rush hour traffic down Queen's Drive starts. Yeah I didn't think it was a cycle path on that stretch...
I was overtaken by a large truck on Balcarres Street this morning despite there being another large truck coming in the other direction at the time. It was not overly close, but the overtaking driver had to start pulling in before completing the overtake and the driver of the other truck had to pull over (possibly regardless of the overtake) to provide space to get by. I came close to catching up with the truck as the driver waited to turn right at the end of the road and then overtook shortly after the driver joined the end of the lengthy queue of traffic on Myreside Road.
Looks like pulling out in front of police car bmw
Had to slam on the anchors in the rain this morning crossing Princes Street from the Mound. I had green, but a Lothian bus steamed across my path from the east.
Have enquired of Lothian Buses if there might be a timing problem on those lights.

If only the police car had Hi-Viz and bright lights...
closest/most terrifying pass in months just as lights changed when about to turn left off Grt Junt onto Ferry Rd. Caught up with him 20 secs later as he turned into Leith Library so I followed him in.
"SMIDSY"
am trying to be much calmer these days (aka less sweary), but I had to fight the urge to put my dlock through his windscreen.
Took primary in an ASL on Melville Drive, as there was a parked car not far ahead. Driver behind gets as close as possible whilst the light is still red, then accelerates as soon as the amber light comes on. They shouted "Move over" as they passed. "No", was the reply.
Worse was to follow at the Dalkeith Road/Peffermill Road roundabout, where I was going straight on, but a left-turning driver still overtook me as the lights changed. The driver behind them then passed far too closely as well - perhaps made easier by my being disoriented by the first driver.
Daft Tesco artic driver got himself stuck in West Tollcross today. Drove in and struggled for about 10 mins to negotiate his way past parked cars.
The firefighters even came out for a amused look at his efforts.
sooner we have laws banning these massive delivery trucks from city centres the better.
Saw an absolutely HUGE lorry in the old town last week - I swear it was a 10 wheeler trailer. It appeared to be making deliveries...
From a social media friend who teaches English in Poland:-
Me: What do you call someone who does motor racing?
Student: A motor racist?
Rather like that term for automobile hater, especially speedy automobile hater.
Actually rubbish infrastructure. Middle Meadow Walk to Forest Road yet again. The lights go green for Meadows cyclists and Teviot Road drivists and the drivists always think that means they can charge into the left hand lane without looking.
I refused to back down, as I do these days. Much gesticulation. I caught the guy up five or six times up to George Street but he wouldn't listen even though I called him Sir and wished him a fine morning. Tried to film me with his dashcam. I ended up blowing him a kiss as I left him stranded in the traffic.
I do wish the council would just change the phase on those lights.
A change in the phase would be a good start. It is preferable to go through on red to avoid that issue, particularly if there are vehicles illegally stopped to drop off thier children for George Heriot's or loading thier faces with Steak Bakes.
Yep, through on red FTW
loading their faces with Steak Bakes
But my face quite likes to be loaded with a steak bake as a winter warmer? I'm not the bad guy am I?
Witnessed a perfectly executed left hook by a silver Golf this morning turning left from South Clerk Street to Hope Park Terrace - cyclist clearly experienced and was on the brakes in time... annoyed but brushed it off - the car then sped down to run a red turning left into Summerhall Crescent.
beeping, tailgating, and even an attempted undertake on the pavement today from a driver who was behind me in the bus lane climbing burdiehouse road. I slowed to just keep rolling as I approached the queue of traffic at the lights, hoping not to have to stop, which apparently frustrated the driver enough to try and undertake me on the pavement.
People who attempt overtakes on the pavement or (the other favourite) by going the wrong way around a roundabout - what are they thinking? "When my driving instructor emphasised making progress this was definitely what was meant."
Cycled round Arthur's Seat tonight. The gate at the bottom of the hill was closed, so drivers were turning right here. No problem with that, other than the fact that it's a Give Way junction, and I was coming towards them. But no, force the cyclist to come to a stop so that you can squeeze through even though they have priority. Three or four of them did this, and was starting to think I must have been going the wrong way up a one way road all these years.
@Frenchy. me too. No problem at the bottom but did meet a red car on the south side, it's driver going the wrong way up Queen's Drive presumably because the bottom gate was closed.
Also, driver of a silver Ford Focus, NM08CWL, who is parking their car on the North Meadow Walk next to the Buccleugh St cottages.
