Called 101 and suggested he might not be in a fit state to drive.

How long before they stopped laughing and realised you were serious?

Wow, you got through to 101. I never do, just get a 15p bill on my mobile.

Yep 101 is a bit like the speaking clock. A good way of checking your phone is working without the risk that anyone will answer.

They took it all serious and that and want to send bobbies round to take a statement but I told them to just phone me.

I just want the dude to get a chat and the chance to calm it at the wheel a wee bit. You never know.

Good to hear. Possible they won't even do that without corroboration, but would hope that they do.

I told them I was fine and no witnesses and all that. Still they wish to chat and I guess that's fine. I just want them to keep an eye out for the gentleman in question.

    I had a classic today

Lovely driver compliments my light a minute later i am run into by a van, abused, threatened, assaulted

    ...i didn't swear....did i do anything improper?

...i didn't swear....did i do anything improper? " Yes you hit the mirror, if a cylist went past close and hit mirror they may complain if a pedestrain went past close and hit mirror they may complain. ( i know very pedestrains have mirrors but if they did)

I am not saying van was not too close it appears to be, but hitting mirror is likly to cause reaction and unless to warn of impending accident then can not really be proper can it?

So you believe him when he said I hit his mirror? wow... I didn't ...he ran into my hand...wow i mean just wow that you wrote this

I thought with first response, but if you did not then yes he was very reckless and you did nothing improper at all. I like watching motorcycles driving fast on the road (on youtube) and they often hit mirrors so I incorrectlty assumed you hit mirror

...trouble is that even as a cyclist you ignored everything else seeing the video ... the verbal abuse, the threats, the pushing, the close pass and hit, the lucozade bottle thrown at my head... his logic.. even managed the road tax argument. His mirror hit my hand.

...so i guess thats how everyone else will take it ... they will believe i managed to turn round...deliberately hit his mirror when he was behind me ... and then everything else is an irrelevance

this is why i no longer report anything to the police...

So just seeing as you didn't write the company name

Get IWRATS to report it for you as the police seem to listen to him.
Technically, anyone who saw the video might feel inclined to 101 it, if they knew what time it occurred.

Ragingbike, I understand you not wanting to raise this with Police after the shocking treatment they gave you. Are you happy for this to be tweeted to the company (and their customers) to ask their opinion about it?

    Two entries:

Last night, heading South on Clerk Street / Newington Road. At the junction of Newington Road and East Preston Street, the car behind me got honked at by a bus for not moving when the lights turned green (talking to their girlfriend I think, probably not on the phone at least). They then zoomed up behind me and tried to overtake as I pulled up to the red light at the Salisbury Place junction, but only succeeded at stopping at a weird angle in the road.

There's roadworks in the bus lane just before Blacket Avenue, and the car in front of me was sticking to the 20mph limit all the way from the bridges, so I stayed in the outside lane. I was keeping up with the car in front on the way down, and the driver behind me started honking and pointing at the bus lane. I stubbornly stayed in the outside lane - still keeping about 5-10 metres from the car in front.
Eventually, Mr. Impatient decided to floor it down the bus lane, saw the road works and then just pulled into the side of me (no indicating of course, and I don't think there was any contact but it was close), pushing me into the oncoming lane of traffic.
We then stopped at the pedestrian crossing, where he gave me a load of abuse about "cyclists need to be in the left" and drove off while I was telling him that there's roadworks there and I was keeping up with traffic.

I pulled into the bus lane and then cycled alongside him all the way down to East Suffolk Road - he was stuck behind the car that was in front of me. I was pretty p***ed off, and was shouting at him to honk at the car in front of him, asking why they weren't trying to drive them off the road, and asking if it's only cyclists that hold him up.

Then we both stopped at the lights at Cameron Toll junction, where I cycled up to the driver's side window and waved to him to wind it down. He gave me a dismissive "go away" hand wave and then finally wound the window down after I kept talking loudly at him, and said "You were in the wrong gear, your legs were going round like crazy". I ignored that and told him there was road works there and he said "You still should have been on the left" - then the lights changed and he drove off.

And again, my camera was off (battery ran out 30 mins earlier) :(

Second crap driving was less exciting - this morning on Queen's Drive - a driver overtook me at the top roundabout, then squeezed in front of me, leaving about 20-30cm between my wheel and their bumper, then sat up the backside of the car in front until after the bend where they overtook and floored it to easily over 40 mph. Though since Historic Scotland and Police Scotland both don't care about people speeding through the park, this is an almost daily occurrence.

    Wow that was bad, @ragingbike.

If it were me, I'd absolutely be reporting that to the police, but it's perfectly understandable that you don't want to, and I suspect you're right about the outcome.

Well done on your restraint as well.

Moron in a small dark blue VW sort of thing spoiled my morning by approaching rapidly from behind and to the right as I approached the Sleigh Drive/Marionville roundabout. They were doing their best eyes-straight-ahead face when I turned round to shout but somehow suddenly decided they were going to hold back. They then gave the cyclist in front of me a suspiciously wide berth when they finally overtook on the approach to the Sainsbury roundabout, where they squeaked through a very dark amber light to turn left. That. combined with the Mound not yet being shut, resulted in shouting at the bus in front of me (which was right up the mudguard of a cyclist cycling very close and parallel to the tram tracks on Princes Street) and making 'no headset' gestures at the two Rabbie's bus drivers I saw wearing and speaking into them.

This is a criminal offence, mind. No problem with corroboration if you call it in.

Just caught up with the thread - Ragingbike, that needs to be reported to the police. The fact that the driver thinks that cyclists have to be to the side of the road and apparently don't have any right to be on the road (Going by the road tax argument), coupled with the assault is plenty of reason to report it.

The police won't do anything about the wing mirror since it's your word against theirs, but presumably the assault will get taken seriously.

Also I'd at the very least contact the company with a link to the video.

Another one for the "Audis in houses" meme.

I do want to comment on that article that houses should be forced to be covered in "motorway maintenance style" hi-viz chevrons.

Thanks everyone. Some of you know why i don't report it. The last time I was run over and posted a video it caused me a world of pain, totally unfounded criminal charges were brought against me and it cost me time in custody, an awful lot of money, untold stress etc etc ...it is a quite unbelievable story.

I have been hit since and assaulted, all on camera and the police attending had a go at me... despite my bike being stuck under a private hire coach, video and witnesses... i didn't publish the video and never received a police report for insurance purposes.

So sure if anyone wants to share... i posted in for the record... and maybe the company will see it one day... but there is absolutely no point in speaking to the police.

For the record he aimed his van at me and hit me thats why his wing mirror hit me. I think he was trying to do a close pass and misjudged

Ah, understandable why you don't want to report it to the police then. I think it's still worthwhile reporting it to the company - at the very least they'll surely talk to the driver and passenger - the passenger might come off worse than the driver, since the assault is the only part caught on camera.

But it's up to you of course.

I'm just impressed you were as calm as you were - I can guarantee I wouldn't be ;)

I'd just ask their employer if that's the language their employees should be using when in a liveried van and liveried clothing.

If the HR department is up to anything they'll be in for a whole world of tedious retraining.

Most employees are covered by their staff handbook whenever they're identifiable as employees by any means.

You can cause these gentlemen a world of discomfort at little risk to yourself.

last time it didn't work out so well...I'd rather stay totally anonymous.

Trouble is if these two lose their jobs ... they will find me ..and thats not something i need in my life, nor would i want. They both seem to have issues.

On a similar note, I recently reported a Royal Mail driver for driving like a pillock and swearing at me, and as part of the complaints procedure they asked for my address. I gave a friend's address (with their permission) but my name.

3 days later, that friend received an estimation for a cremation from a funeral director, addressed to my name (Well, initial + surname). Spoke with the funeral directors, who said someone had filled in one of their "Please send me a quotation for a cremation" cards and posted it (which I now have in my possession).
I complained about that to Royal Mail again, heard nothing back. I also reported it to the police, but they said there was no way to confirm it was in any way related to the driver I reported. Fun times.

So the moral of this story is that if you ever need to complain about a Royal Mail driver, refuse to give your address.
