"I also reported it to the police, but they said there was no way to confirm it was in any way related to the driver I reported."

Aye on the basis of probability someone plucked your name and your mate's address out of the aether in order to prank a funeral director. Truly these polis live in another world.

@ragingbike I reported an incident where a driver coming from Teviot Place onto Forrest Road tried to change lanes into me and then, after failing to force me out of his way, sat behind me at the lights shouting abuse and then close passed me on the inside to turn down Candlemaker Row. It was all caught on a rear camera so there was corroboration.

The last time I spoke to them they were planning to prosecute for a public order offence and the close pass. It seems highly unlikely it will ever reach court but may make the driver think twice about thier behaviour when they get behind the wheel.

@EdinburghCycle I had a long ongoing discussion with the Royal Mail as I felt that my home address was irrelevant to reporting the poor behaviour of one of thier drivers at a completely different location (parking on zig-zag markings).

I don't suppose your incident was recent so that it falls under the adoption of GDPR? I wonder whether the ICO would be interested in that either way...

I am not saying van was not too close it appears to be, but hitting mirror is likly to cause reaction

If ragingbike had hit the wing mirror, in the manner of filtering, it would have been pushed forwards. The mirror in the video is clearly pushed backwards, which implies that the van approached ragingbike from behind and collided with the handlebar/hand as it passed.

JBEMS is quite a large organisation, so it should have an HR department. Not all large organisations who have HR departments are lucky enough to have effective HR departments, mind you.

Nah, 30th April (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=CrBE_7x9b-A - Space added in the URL to disable embedding). But they'd probably also say the same as the police said - there's no evidence that the funeral estimate and reporting the incident are related - even though there's some pretty strong circumstantial evidence. I did consider reporting it as a breach of data protection or something, but again - no actual evidence.

On the plus side, my friend hasn't had any more notes addressed to me or anything, and they're moving out at the end of the month anyway (which is why they agreed to let me use their address).

@edinburghcycle I find your story truly chilling. That's a death threat and two major public bodies, Royal Mail and Police Scotland, are content to do nothing about it. I don't feel it would be hard for either body to determine how your name and (friend's) address was released to the RM employee involved, and then the very least that should follow is serious disciplinary action, and a police caution.

  7. I've dropped complaints I tried to make to Royal Mail in the past because of their insistence that the couldn't do anything about it unless they had my full name and postal address.

As I told them at the time, they didn't need it - and I also said that I'd imagine that a lot of my mail would start to go astray when they inevitably 'leaked' the complainant's name and address to their staff.

It's a great way to ensure that no-one will lodge any complaints against their drivers, I suppose.

Taxi complaints require an address, too. I occasionally wonder if the one which regularly parks coutside the house and takes a very long time (with the rumbly engine running loudly) to leave or arrive at five in the morning is coincidental or not.

@ih Vince Cable and his Lib Dem chums privatised the Royal Mail. It has an activist hedge fund as a major shareholder so you can bet it is being sweated for cash returns. That's what really turns managers into brutes.

I made a complaint about a Royal Mail driver last year. I did this by sending an email to customer.service.team(AT)royalmail.com. It did not occur to me to tell them my address (thankfully, it turns out), and they did not ask for it. Got a reply saying they take these matters seriously, and it would be passed to the relevant manager to deal with.

Don't think I've been asked for my address when making complaints to the council, although when I've done so to the police they have.

I complained via Twitter initially, and was asked via DM to e-mail twitter@royalmail.com with details. I got this reply:

    ----------------------
    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for your message.

I’m really sorry to hear of the incident involving one of our drivers, I appreciate your disappointment and concerns.

The public's safety and that of our employees (including drivers) is something Royal Mail takes very seriously - so thank you for taking the time to make us aware of this.

Before I can log this as an official complaint I will need the following details if I can:
    * Your full address including postcode

Just to clarify your address is for logging purposes, without this information I can only inform the Manager of what’s happened but wouldn’t be able to log a formal complaint.
    ----------------------

I've also reported a couple of taxi drivers via licensing@edinburgh.gov.uk and never been asked for my address either.

Hmmm. Maybe it's Loathium Buses' complaints process I was thinking of, then.

Don't think I've ever given my address to them either. Possible that whoever it was has changed their policy, or that some staff ignore it since they get grief from customers about it.

I don't think giving your name and address or not is the fundamental issue. There's an argument, I understand, that says if you are making a serious complaint about an employee, you should be prepared to establish your bona fides with some identification. To me, the issue is that organisations should have the governance principles in place so not to reveal your personal information to psychopaths who send you death threats.

The driver of a car who didn't hesitate as the lights of the pedestrian crossing just outside Filmhouse were changing from amber to red moments before they sped through up the hill. Also the driver of the taxi who was blindly following... I attempted, but just failed, to slap the side as it passed.

Ha. Turns out the guy that gave me a volley of abuse on Wednesday was working for CEC at the time. Now they're getting an e-mail from Phoilis na h-Alba with a few choice excerpts from his monologue.

Should be a nice sweaty meeting with his manager.

Looks like I caught the aftermath of something - ambulance on Gogar Station Road this morning, and a cyclist standing talking on his mobile. Hopefully no serious injuries.

Personal Trainer in a wee red car (this guy http://www.bodytechnician.co.uk/) cut in front to enter the roundabout at London Road then, after waiting 5s at the red light at the Playhouse decided red lights were not for him and just set off.

Pedestrian crossing near Royal High on Queensferry Road had some really shocking driving behaviour this morning. Several blocking the crossing and when they moved off another couple decided to run the red light which had been red for about 5 secs and almost mowed folk on the crossing down.

@wishicouldgoabitfaster Queensferry Road is for Otherwise Law Abiding Motorists to get to work quickly and not for Lazy Pedestrians who should get a better job and buy a car.

I always get my phone out to record (or look as if I am recording) when I cross there. Early anecdata is suggestive of a correlation between the presence of the phone and the ability of drivers to stop at the red light.

Weird thing was i wasn't taking a photo of him but the temp guage on the Farmer's garage...

going up Broughton street there's a pedestrian refuge where i've been passed uncomfortably close. so when i heard a car behind me today, i thought, aha! and moved into what i thought was a good primary position.

apparently this driver needed me to be all the way to the right, as he came through with me!

his windows were open but i was afraid if i swore he would swerve. and murphy's law, the light at the top was green like it never is, so i couldn't catch him to talk about how 1.5 metres is not the same as 1.5 feet.

Someone in a transit van driving up Gilmerton Road with a dog in their lap; the dog had its front paws on the steering wheel.

Whilst this was, admittedly, incredibly cute, I don't think you would pass your driving test like this...

I'm just confused how the dog communicates to the person what it wants with the pedals.

There must have been another dog working the pedals.

Taxi driver on Leith Walk, Southbound last night, approaching the McDonald Road junction.

The lights had been red for a good 5 seconds before the driver went straight into the bike box.
Then, the advance cycle light came on and the driver floored it - he got almost all the way across the junction before the green light for all traffic came on, and then he went straight on from the right hand turn lane.

That one's been reported to the cab office, since all 3 of those things are dangerous to cyclists. They might ask me to call 101 instead (they did when I reported a taxi driver on the phone), though I'm not sure I can be bothered doing that. We'll see, I guess.
