Listening to programme about Barbara Castle who introduced the breathalyzer legislation in 1966. Furious driver asks how dare she spoil his fun and he drives at his best with 5 pints in him. Drivers don't quite have that same sense of entitlement - not even Jeremy Clarkson would demand the right to drink 5 pints and drive.

Castle didn't drive, which really infuriated the drivers (also that she was a woman).

I like this; bit like putting pacifists in the Ministry of Defence.

    This is different!

A police officer who used a car to knock down a knifeman after he stabbed two colleagues showed "extreme bravery", a review has found.

Why is this junction so wide?

I saw a driver turn left from the main road into the side road there at about 80mph earlier today. I was about to turn right into the side road. A few seconds earlier and there's a good chance I'd've been absolutely smithereened.

Could equally be posted in the Sentient Beings thread.

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/disruption-to-haymarket-trains-after-lorry-hits-bridge-near-station-1-4831889

“Rail services in Edinburgh were disrupted this afternoon after a lorry struck a bridge in the Murrayfield area.”

  7. "Why is this junction so wide?"

And why just after it, does the "cycle lane" end and an equally wide bit of tarmac in the centre of the road get hatched out?

Got to make room for that right filter lane for accessing that single house!

I watched a black cab driver pull right into the kerb to stop two cyclists filtering through the near stationary traffic on St John’s Road this morning. Both cyclists stepped onto the pavement, wheeled past and carried on.

Petty and vindictive from the driver.

On each commute-leg so far this week I've been moved to complain/wave/yell at an oncoming motor vehicle performing a stupid overtake on a cyclist, all seemingly paying more attention to effecting a hurt/disgruntled/unfairly-delayed woe-face than give the cyclist sufficient space or pay attention to anything in the opposite lane.

Not the UK, but the reporting reveals the “speeding isn’t a real crime” mindset:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46288054

“An unlucky youngster managed to lose his driver's licence just 49 minutes after getting it, German police said.
The 18-year-old was returning from his successful driving test when officers in the town of Hemer checked his car with a laser speed gun.
He was clocked travelling almost twice the speed limit - at 95km/h (60mph) in a 50km/h (30mph) zone.”

"...was returning from his successful driving test..."

My driving instructor had a policy of not letting the testee drive back from the test centre after a successful test.

@winpig My instructor was the same - after I passed my test he drove me home - with the seat back at 45 degrees and one hand on the steering wheel most of the way...

I doubt many have their cars insured for people other than pupils and themselves to drive, as well.

I was impressed to observe the driver of a Mini this morning on Oxgangs Road waiting patiently behind a bin lorry which was stopped next to a pedestrian refuge while a couple of brown bins were emptied in to it.

I was less impressed, but not at all surprised, when their patience came to an end and they pulled out to pass the bin lorry after all, in the process "failing to comply with" the keep left sign on the bollard. The decision to commit this offence (TS50, 3 points) being taken all of three seconds before the binman had finished emptying the bins into the lorry and the lorry started to move along the road thus clearing the way. (Since the car was behind the bin lorry, the driver had a clear view of what was going on all the time, so it should have been obvious to them that only a few more seconds' patience was required.)

Turning right from West Mayfield into Minto Street filtered past two workie vans to the ASZ. Big mistake.

One comes past my left elbow on the rev limiter in first while the second turns right from behind me as I start to turn.

Left standing there thinking 'OK, still alive.'

A neat collection of videos to illustrate the points in this thread.

Lots of "a Cyclist cut me up once and cost me 10 seconds, therefore all cyclists deserve to die" comments BTL...

I didn't go near the comments below that article. I don't understand why The Guardian leaves them turned on for cycling-related articles like this one - they always seem to attract the worst in swivel-eyed, foaming at the mouth loons. They seem to keep comments turned off for plenty of other articles about topics that normally attract far lower levels of obnoxious stupidity and wilful ignorance.

    That's good going.

I've only knowingly been deleted for suggesting that it might perhaps be time for the author of their Adult Learner column (who, according to her LinkedIn profile, is a "Journalist and Commissioning Editor", and who graduated in 2009 making her about 30 years old) to actually grow up a bit, rather than writing about how jolly confusing it is to be wilfully ignorant about the world.

(To be fair, some or her recent columns have been noticeably less eye-rollingly dumb.)

Also, couldn't face the yellow vests and danger/chaos of George Street. Went up Princes Street instead. NCN1, eh?

Not sure where to put this...

Greenroofer Towers has recently acquired Forza Horizon 4. For those unfamiliar with console-based driving games, this one is set in a fair facsimile of the best bits of Edinburgh mixed with other attractive parts of the UK.

    Anyway...

    • It starts with a disclaimer saying that driving is dangerous, that some of the things shown and done in the game are not legal, and that airbags are not simulated (I mean, seriously?)
    • The bike lanes on the Mound are beautifully rendered in glowing red in a way they've not been in real life for many years.
    • Many YouTube videos are available showing that nevertheless many Edinburgh drivers have learned their skills on this game. Notice the 'lack of situational awareness' in the bollards in this example.

Wow, that looks like a great place to drive - very little traffic or pedestrians and all the traffic lights were at green.

Is it me or is everyone driving like total maniacs today? I've had close passes, drivers ignoring red lights, drivers tailgating, drivers failing to look left and right...I just want to ride my bike into town safely.

A few million years my mate had project Gotham racing, I spent a few hours while he was at work unlocking Edinburgh, I was disappointed to discover they'd moved the water fountain at the bottom of Victoria Street to allow for easier racing.
