A fairly usual amount of private hires in the bus lane approaching Drumbrae Roundabout this morning, followed by a delivery driver who close passed me and then cut into the Marriott bumping over the pavement for good measure.

He didn't appreciate me asking for more space and promptly verbally abused and threatened me. Charming..

Perhaps not the best thread for this, but anyway.

A few years ago, the most popular pedestrian/cyclist entrance to Kings Buildings looked like this.

Obvious pedestrian/cyclist conflict ensued. So they changed it to look like this.

    Much better!

A few weeks ago, however, a bench was added, drastically narrowing the space for pedestrians and cyclists, and reintroducing conflict. It now looks like this. It turns out that people had been driving in that way, so the University has deemed it necessary to put a barrier in to deter them. Thanks, drivers!

Would a couple of bollards not be just as effective and less of a trip hazard!

    My thoughts too.

    Bringing barrier? Bollards beat bench.

I have already suggested bollards, but fear that they won't match the desired aesthetics.

TBF, the police are normally quite good at not using the word "accident". This one obviously has not done "the training".

The BBC, however, are the absolute worst for it & also for going out of their way to absolve the driver of any kind of agency.

Just listen BBC R2 traffic reports: "accident this, accident that, accident over there...."

I find it really bizarre that bad driving is treated in such a lax manner. The points system we have should be used to get bad/unfit/dangerous people of the road yet it is often treated as an ‘accident’ which more often than not is police speak for for we can’t be arsed. No wonder we have so many ‘accidents’ as we make no effort to remove poor drivers

Deep down, these people are terrified of being eaten alive by the police/DVLA/'justice' system if they drive carelessly (they might have to sit on buckets of poo in a prison, or travel by overheated germ-box), so they aid/abet and are relieved by this softening and de-personalisation of vehicular weapon use.

As a few of us have pointed out, some driving instructors take the time to point out how you're applying for a license to operate a deadly weapon in public, but even if every driving instructor was required to do this (and if every car was decorated like an old-fashioned sea-mine with spikes on the outside and an air of menace) there'd still be the people with two copies of the selfishness allele.

Too many red light jumping cars to count. Wet and dark and Friday so obviously ploughing blithely on is the only possible reaction. Special bonus from this morning to the lady who came through the red and went right into Gilmore Street (or is it Lochrin Buildings at the start?) at the Kings - I was heading for the Meadows on green and had been behind a car, so by the time she went though the red must have been red for quite a long time...

I remember the first time heard the suggestion that airbags should be replaced with WWI bayonets. Made total sense.

Someone texting whilst driving in Moredun. They only looked up as they approached the junction because their passenger slapped them on the arm. I was turning right into the road they were coming out of. Kids in the back seat too.

6th December, in the space of 5 minutes, down one road (A701 / Newington Road / Minto Street / Craigmillar Park / why does it have so many names?):

Two entries today. One this morning, which I've emailed the company about - an HGV speeding through Holyrood Park (which is no commercial vehicle access):

And one on my way home, a private hire car driver who close-passed me on Gilmerton Road outside Liberton High School, only to pull in to The Robin's Nest car park. *sigh*:

Just wondering what camera you use? Thinking it's time to invest...

@edinburgh87 It's a "Shimano CM-1000" (Example link). I like it because it doesn't make me look too much like a teletubby, though the low-light quality is a bit meh, and battery life is now down to an hour (at 720p, 60 FPS) after 2 years of daily use. It's probably going to become my rear camera, and I'll get a new camera in the January sales.

Ever since a driver somehow managed to overtake me going along here, I always make absolutely sure to take a strong primary position. Tonight, as I did so, the driver of an oncoming transit van waited for me. When I got to the top of the brae and signalled left, they shouted "Could have kept to the left then, pal".

This made me glad I'd taken primary, and also thoroughly confused me. Would they have been happy with my road position if I'd been going straight on?

SJ4000 cameras are very good, and a bit cheaper. £50 IIRC. I run a Mobius on the front and an SJ4000 for the rear. Good low light on the SJ4000, bit less on the Mobius.

SJ4000s also have the benefit of being same form factor as GoPro so the mounts work with it also. Google Techmoan for in depth reviews.

Regarding bench or bollards at KB (further up the page). Now told that a bench was preferred to bollards in order to make cyclists slow down.

I spent 5 weeks going in to the Kings Buildings from the south while that entrance was blocked for construction. there is no pleasant way to get into the area from the south without that entrance.

and as for going home, that vet's office shouldn't be allowed to book more appointments than they have parking spaces.

The driver of the white private hire Prius who chose to overtake me on Gilmore Place despite the fact that I was indicating that I was going to be turning right onto Lower Gilmore Place. Admittedly, I indicated quite early, but I did so to try to discourage the overtake that I suspected was about to come since there was no longer traffic coming in the opposite direction. Just as well I didn't actually want to turn right onto Gilmore Place Lane though...

NWH tipper truck reversing onto Picardy Place during rush hour this morning. Under observation of man in high vis but no actual control. He didn't attempt to stop traffic or anything, he just stood there as vehicles (and me) had to scatter.
