I hope the sun wasn’t an issue at all and Mr. Loophole is shown to be the chancer he is.

Today's rubbish driving...

Apparently the collision occurred here.
Mr Mountbatten was pulling out of the side road and the other vehicle was approaching from the north.
I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but the sun was most likely behind the trees across from the side road, or possibly further south in the sky.

A motorist who has been coming out the same road end for over sixty years surely knows that something is likely to be present. Sun or no sun it only takes a second to press the window button and listen for approaching vehicles as any sensible driver would do.

A taxi driver undertook me as I turned right from Dundas Street into Eyre Place, after waiting for all the oncoming traffic to go straight over. This necessitated them driving on the wrong side of Eyre Place for twenty metres, followed by a brief moment of normal driving before they switched on their hazards and drew to a stop behind a double-parked car just opposite the end of the wee road leading to the park, along which I went after I advised them that I thought little of them. They shouted something back at me but it wasn't "yes, I realise that now, I'm sorry" so I ignored them.

Police seemed to be pulling drivers over who were ignoring the buses only lane/direction past Edinburgh Park Station on Bankhead drive, this evening
When I passed around 5ish they had a queue of about 8 cars and vans they seemed to be processing.

I noticed last weekend that that bus lane is now signed for use by buses, taxis and cycles, rather than buses only.

Shouldn’t be a question of age.
It may be that more older people have bad eyesight - but under 25s more likely to have crashes.
All people intending to drive should have their eyes tested every year and have a bit of paper saying whether the test was with or without glasses/contacts.
Under 25s should probably have annual competence/attitude tests.

Driver of a council van with both hands off the wheel to text.

Crossing the road at McDonalds Corstorphine and was annoyed at a driver going through on red. Lack of attention due to being on his phone.

@wishicouldgofaster, Extinction Rebellion would have sprayed that car with their chalk paint. I feel if you are going to destroy the planet by insisting on driving every time you go out the house, even in your nineties, you should at least driver correctly ya bass.
Amazed today at the different tolerances from drivers passing Us today on our cycle down to elsrickle and back on main roads. From punishment passes of inches to very considerate drivers going right over into the other carriageway.
Of note, many tines overtaken on blind corners and blind summits. Also when two unbroken white lines in centre of the road which I understand means no overtaking. What's to do Minnie Caldwell? (as they used to say on coronation street)

The driver who overtook me on Gray's Loan this afternoon too close and in the face of oncoming traffic (and who then had to stop 20 yards further on at the red light at Polwarth Terrace that was visible the whole time he was doing this manoeuvre) might have been able to drive better if he hadn't been involved in a video call with a young woman on the 'hands free' phone on his dashboard.
I really do struggle to understand the level of stupidity and selfishness that makes him think that doing that can be in any way sensible. Obviously it's utterly illegal as well.

@greenroofer, see above, only 11 years left according to Extinction Rebellion so if you insist on driving a car at all times, then please learn to drive a car properly. I would move that all of Police Scotland's budget be shifted to enforcing correct driving. This will half the murder rate.

Back in the saddle -

@chrisfl, it's a nasty spot there, since the drivers who are about to ignore the No Entry signs to that stretch are also completely oblivious to the fact there may be a bike on the outside of them continuing round the roundabout.
I'd like to propose a fillip (see what I did there?) to driving examiners...mandatory 5-yearly driving tests for everyone.

Always good to know your enemies.
For reasons of nostalgia I recently linked to the village I grew up in which has a Facebook account and from thence to some people I was at primary school with. One of them is an arch brexiteer. His posts are not racist but they are all of a type. When he strays from brexit he is also quite something. For example he believes speed cameras are a crafty invention to catch out motorists and likes to alert us to where they are situated.
I was going to unfriend him but as I say, it is good to know your enemy.

Eeesh.
I unfollowed a couple of back-home people during the indyref campaign. If I hadn't done it then I suspect I would have by now, with the amount of things there have been over the past few years.Posted 5 years ago # -
“ For example he believes speed cameras are a crafty invention to catch out motorists and likes to alert us to where they are situated.”
Quite common.
It’s the attitude that got the fixed ones painted yellow!

Of it’s all part of the ‘I’m a good driver/laws don’t apply to me’ stuff.
IF any version of ‘no more laws from Brussels’ happens, it will be interesting to see if UK laws are respected more or less!

it is good to know your enemy
I used the comments section of the Telegraph as live-fire training for canvassing in 2014.
That guy is a lightweight though. Can't follow his own monarchical argument to any of its logical conclusions and his rhetoric is milquetoast pap.

The rural conservative journalist not really getting much help from Phil the Greek. Though whybshouldnthe consort of the monarch have to wear a seat belt? I mean it is his country.

Truly horrid experience this morning.
My commute with the kids takes me from Craigs Roads road across Drumbrae to Templeland Road (here). This is because the Craigmount steps bar a safer offroad route :(
I have to admit that I usually take to the pavement and use the pedestrian crossing. I know this plays into the hands of the 'cyclists on the pavement' lobby, so today, for some reason and for the 1st time in years, I decided I should stick to the road.
The road is clear so I turn left, put out my right hand and move to the RHS of the lane and slowly chug up the incline. Approaching Templeland Road, it's all clear ahead, and I'm just about to turn when my 'lifesaver' shoulder check highlights a fast moving little black car about to overtake me.
They obviously saw me as they were travelling North in the Southbound lane.
I'm going back to the pavement/ ped crossing and will bookmark this incident if anyone challenges why I do it.

That's some top tier bad driving.
Hope all are OK.

Bad driving with only drivers as victims...
today i had to wait 10 minutes for a particular grocery store delivery van to reverse 1/4 mile back up the Rochid path. i was very kind and didn't take photos--i hope the driver will think twice before following directions on a screen in future.
although, I admit i had no idea any system at all would take someone down that path...
(really hoping he's the driver next time i make an order.)

From memory the 2 second rule and stopping distances in the highway code are for cars traveling in fair conditions. Would motorcyclists not expect to have extended stopping distances?
Regardless it sounds like the correct judgement.
Posted 5 years ago # -
My nephew-in-law did an end-over on his GSXR to save the life of a jaywalker, all on CCTV. Depends on the bike and car, but I expect 2 front tyres plus 2 rear stop quicker than 1 front. Even more so in the wet, off camber or a dodgy surface.
For a mid-range car compared to a mid-range motorcycle at least, apples to apples comparison.Posted 5 years ago # -
"Would motorcyclists not expect to have extended stopping distances?"
Also people in tunnels.
Posted 5 years ago # -
"The driver became apprehensive when she saw motorcyclists in her mirror and she braked suddenly. In fact, she braked so hard she performed an emergency stop."
Hmm. I feel like if you're so highly strung that the mere sight of motorcyclists behind you causes you to perform an (accidental? how likely is this?) emergency stop, perhaps you shouldn't be driving on the public highway at all?
