Stopped at the lights on Gilmerton Road. Red with a school crossing patrol. Kids cross, patrol retreats. Still red, we wait.

Bluebird Cabs private hire gets impatient and drives through the red. Extraordinary and commonplace lawlessness.

“While the vast majority of those who visit Joshua Tree do so in a responsible manner, there have been incidents of new roads being created by motorists and the destruction of Joshua trees in recent days that have precipitated the closure,” said park spokesman George Land in the news release.

WF67 YCX missing the stop line at the end of Dalry Road at Haymarket this morning whilst its driver tapped merrily away on their telephone. They didn't notice me tapping their bonnet, waving and yelling, so they wouldn't have noticed removing a camera from the handlebars and pointing it at them if I'd had it with me.

Not sure if sentient beings or rubbish driving or just unfortunate, but:

"Gritter overturns during icy weather near Appin"

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-47055009

It's not like the driver couldn't have known it was icy.

I was cycling up from Colinton in Edinburgh today wearing a very bright pink Hi_viz jersey. approx. 08.45am.I advanced on to the roundabout as there were no cars to the right (oxgangs direction)so technically I had right of way and indeed the cars to the right of your van understood this and gave way to me. I watched as your driver put his foot down to accelerate onto the roundabout. When he advanced onto the roundabout at speed he was able to brake. I had of course stopped on the roundabout as I did not want to die. If you feel there is a training need here can you please point out to your driver that the highway code would suggest slowing down in this circumstance (approaching a roundabout) not speeding up. Also despite me contravening all fashion rules and wearing a lurid pink, he still did not see me. So perhaps your drivers could be asked to look for cyclists? Thanks for your time. (reg SE16, driver big black beard).

    Typical selfish cyclist.

One for the sentient beings thread?

Had word back, they are taking it up with him, but for some reason thought it was yesterday, which is odd given the word Today features in first line of my complaint.

Bet big black beard is quaking in his big black boots

I have pointed out he is not unique but he does drive around in a van emblazoned with company logo.

Maybe I'm getting older, well ok, I am, but certain roundabouts are getting worse, with people actively speeding up to beat the vehicles they would otherwise have to give way to, and lose, ooh, seconds.

Stick with the lurid pink, suits you!

Journey through west end yesterday must have seen 7 or 8 cars driven through traffic lights that were by that point definitely, absolutely, resolutely red, in the space of about 10 minutes, with a good 3 or 4 MGIFs for good measure. Fair enough, I had 5 bottles of wine in my panniers and was taking easy on the ice. If I'd slid out it would have looked like a massacre.

    @snowy, I had 3 red light jumpers.

    Your panniers sound very good

Summarised nicely in the amber no longer gambling thread.

Edit: not really summarised, more discussed and agreed upon.

  14. Two incidents this morning, one at each end of my commute.

Driver #1 was dangerous. The familiar story of someone entering a roundabout not paying attention to a cyclist already on the roundabout. If I hadn't moved into the right hand lane I would have been imprinted on her bonnet. All she did was stare at me blankly as she sailed on past.

Driver #2 was stupid and selfish. Telford Rd lights, there are 2 lanes: left one is left turn only, right one is straight ahead. Quite a lot of cars queued in the right hand lane and one car in the left. I filtered to the front and just as I reached the front the lights changed to green. I went through in front of both cars and moved over to the left as you are supposed to after the junction. Selfish driver on the left was obviously trying to skip the queue and came right onto my tail and laid into his horn. It was pleasurable to see all the cars in the straight ahead lane overtaking us. When he finally managed to pull out and pass me I received a torrent of obscenities.

Taxi #838 SS14 ZZX, trying to pass through the narrow bit past the Mound then trying to barge into me from the straight-on-to-Shandwick-place lane when I was in the turn-into-Lothian-Road lane. I shall report them.

According to the register of applications for taxi licenses, that number plate should be SF14 ZZX.

Naughty. That makes it illegal for him to ply his trade in that taxi, right?

Considering https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ doesn't list anything under the registration "SS14 ZZX", it's more likely a typo / mis-reading by winpig than an incorrect number plate on the taxi (unless it's been deliberately altered).

    Not actually today but: https://www.theage.com.au/national/nsw/cop-that-d-head-cyclists-in-viral-video-were-off-duty-policemen-20190131-p50upn.html

"If you're going to break the law, it's probably best not to do it in front of police officers.

But – in a classic case of picking the wrong targets – Thomas Harris did just that at the weekend, when he unleashed a foul-mouthed tirade at two cyclists on a Jamberoo road."

Helpfully, he videoed the whole episode on his phone as well.

I've probably misheard myself repeating the plate back over and over until I wrote it down. The taxi number is definite, which would be enough to complain with on its own.

I took this photo whilst walking the dogs this morning.
A couple of hours later, as I cycled to work, it looked exactly the same, yet drivers still seemed to be confused as to why I wasn't in the cycle lane.

The 97-year-old voluntarily gave up his driving licence on Saturday after his Land Rover Freelander collided with another vehicle in Norfolk last month.

Weasel words. But no longer surprising.

Driver…going the wrong side of a traffic island…to get past…

This happens frequently northbound on Penicuik Road (B7003) where they built a pedestrian crossing island as part of the improved access to/from the Cala Houses mansions and the bus stop. Many occurrences caught on my video camera.

Twice on Sunday I was praying to st aiden and st Cuthbert (my cycling saints) that the impending overtake was going to involve the driver going the wrong side of the traffic island as there was no space between me and the inside of the traffic island. Fortunately both times this was the case.

The driver of a small white van who failed to stop despite the fact that I was part-way across a pedestrian crossing on Heriot-Watt Campus just now. They spotted me as the vehicle crossed the painted crossing just ahead of me and waved a flustered apology. I slapped the side of the van in response.
