    An attempted overtake by fast-moving idiot on the way out of Linlithgow this morning. A blind hill/corner combination that's standard location for stupid overtakes: it's the point where drivers think they're "out of the town now" so start opening up and don't take kindly to cyclists in the way.

    On this occasion there was a vehicle coming the other way and the idiot in question had to perform an emergency stop. Will the lesson be learned? Judging by the speed at which they drove off after that, no.

    The driver of the car who decided to overtake and left hook me through the red light to turn onto London Road from Meadowbank Terrace because I had the audacity to stop at the red light. Video tonight probably.

    Two close passes today, one on the way in to work and one on the way back, both by drivers clearly fiddling with phones in their laps, both of which scared me enough to swear loudly. Training session alll day: a burly depot manager from another bit of the organisation told me he's amazed anyone cycles in Edinburgh because the roads are too dangerous. He likes to cycle at home in the central belt but stays off the road as much as he can because of vehicles. Depressing.

    Just as my right-filter light was turning green, someone whizzed through the already-red straight-on channel with what looked like a phone in their right hand.

    Just on the final half a mile home and the driver of a slammed grey Honda Civic drove past in the opposite direction, booted the loud pedal and caused a massive backfire from the exhaust.

    An hour later my right ear is still sore, and I fear for my hearing.

    I would have phoned 101 as soon as I got home, but my video camera battery had gone flat so I have no record of the registration.

    Why do we have to put up with this kind of ****?

    And there's another one from tonight which is still rendering (God, I need to sort out my living room PC...), a typical "Oh, there's a cyclist in front of me, they must be going at 5 mph. I'll overtake them, even though there's no space in front of them, because I'm sure the space will appear when I start driving towards the kerb with them in my inside".

    Very murky on Oxgangs Road this am. In not very many minutes I spotted (just) 8 motor vehicles showing no lights of any kind and 7 motor vehicles showing only sidelights or DRLs. Three motor vehicles which did have headlights on (as required by law on such conditions) had only one working headlight.

    The drivers showing only DRLs are worrying. If they mistakenly think that DRLs are adequate in fog then they are presumably also unaware that running on DRLs alone means having no lights showing to the rear. (More likely is that they just don't think at all.)

    As I went to turn left from Canning Street into Rutland Court Lane this morning I encountered a massive red bin lorry reversing up the hill out into Canning Street with no banksman. Had to hop onto the pavement to avoid getting squished!

    And the opposite of ejstubbs' observations, I spotted a mini with its fog light on yesterday in spite of the fact that it was merely raining a bit.

    @fimm: It's bizarre/annoying/makes me despair. Some drivers seem to be desperate to put their fog lights on at the slightest excuse, regardless of the legality or otherwise of doing so. Some drivers seem to be unable to find any kind of light switch when it is actually foggy. I'd hope that the intersection of the two sets is empty, otherwise the resulting cognitive dissonance could be positively injurious to the subject's psychological wellbeing.

    Not just today - the past 3 times that I've turned into Hermits Croft from St. Leonard's Street, I've been driven at by drivers on the wrong side of the road, due to the roadworks.

    Apparently giving way isn't an option, it's more important to barge through and then sit at the junction, waiting to pull out.

    Yes, there's the cycle lane on that corner, but I'm in the road because it's closed...

    The driver of a Scottish Gas van did similar to me this morning, only they were going past a parked car rather than roadworks.

    They gave me a thank you wave, apparently misunderstanding my braking as an act of altruism rather than of self-preservation.

    Someone turning from Ashley Drive into Ashley Grove not so much cutting the corner as full-on driving on the wrong side of the road, at significant speed, just after the drop-off at the school — just the time when parents, often with associated tiny people, disperse from the gate. (Actually, if it were up to me, I would straight up close Ashley Drive at least at school times, you have lots of children crossing the road coming off the towpath, with terrible visibility because of all the parked cars, and drivers bombing down the hill.)

    Drivers egregiously cutting corners is a bugbear of mine in my area (which is a bit of a rat-run). I see far too many who seem to be operating on the basis that "there wasn't anyone there yesterday"...

    And there are kiddies about at school times.

    Silver Honda cycle lane preacher Something-577KTH on Corbiehill Road pointing and waving her hands at me for not being in the door-zone cycle-lane which had also had a car parked in it just up ahead, as she passes both the Primary School and me travelling maybe a touch under 30mph in a 20mph zone, with her daughter in the car.

    The drive of the white BMW (length > 3 m) who chose to continue on across the give way markings onto Teviot Place from the left-hand lane of Potterow despite the fact that I was already on my way past the right-hand lane. They then cut across to the right-hand lane, joining the queue of traffic heading for Forrest Road. I gesticulated towards the rear-view mirror, but didn't realistically expect the driver to see that so tried again as I passed them in the queue, albeit from the far side of the road - they just looked ahead steadfastly.

    @davidsonsdave Honda Jazz is small little hatchback thing. Def not > 3m.

    Edit: Hmm, just checked and it must have grown in recent years. Spec now says it is 4028mm long.

    An old Ford Ka is 3.6m long. Are there any >2 seater cars less than 3m long?

    Cars can be longer than 3metres if heading out of Edinburgh. It is just the direction in to town that needs the shorter wheelbase. This is because all cars driven in to Edinbugh have single occupants.

    On the other thread there is a link to one called Mercury RV like the SMART car. Also I am guessing minis (old school ones) and cinquecentos? I mean for these classic cars The Crusher is willing to overlook a centimetre or two.

    The original Fiat 500 was a 4-seater, length 2.97m.

    The original Mini, also a 4-seater, at 3.054m would just about pass if you removed the rear bumper.

    Indeed, Issigonis (sp?) designed it to be a 10-foot car. Missed by a quarter inch but no-one begrudged him that.
