@mcairney - Good job on those reactions! Did the driver stop?

Myself: From last week, I just forgot about it until now. Taxi driver slightly close passing me going up Leith Street, then shouts at me to "Get in the cycle lane" on Nicholson Street. He parked outside Tesco, we had a polite conversation, and... he apologised!

    wow!

i thought a delivery driver pulling up beside me on a side street was going to shout at me, but instead the driver cheerfully informed me that his (very embarassed) co-worker thought i was, 'very nice, a very nice lady!'

i thanked him for the compliment, and said something like, 'that's fine, but please don't run me over' and he assured me he would drive carefully.

(i normally am not a fan of random compliments, but this was was face to face, not shouted, not 'sexy,' very polite, and cheerful.)

true to his word, he drove carefully!

I took an extended commute home via A70 and A701 this evening. Both were busier than I'm used to, but every driver save one passed with consideration, patience and care. Most of them crossed to the other side of the road. It was lovely.

Then I got to Penicuik and it suddenly turned into Wacky Races. The crowning glory was approaching one of the traffic islands (you know, the ones with the big signs saying "Do not pass cyclists at traffic island" and a bike lane that fills most of the tarmac), and hearing the driver behind me rev their engine and floor it so they could rush past me and just squeeze through the island.

@the canuck - It's been a fairly bad week for incidents for me this week (I've got a few rendering / uploading). At least they're not all "bad"!

@Greenroofer - impressive commute! I should have said that on Strava rather than a sarcastic comment, but never mind ;)
Ride to the Sun was similar - getting to Penicuik around 3am and realising that all the boy racer idiots were out and about. Nothing too bad, just lots of revving, drunken shouting (from passengers, thankfully) and the like. Maybe folk have been driving on quiet roads for a bit and forget how to drive in more built-up areas when they get to Penicuik...

Another of my grievances, from today. Just your standard "I'm in a car, I don't need to give way to a cyclist" nonsense. Sweary as usual from me, of course...

And this one, yesterday morning. Very much a non-incident, but still - why honk at a cyclist filtering safely (you can see how much I'm checking for other filtering cyclists / motorbikes, and I'm keeping an eye out for any cars moving forwards / changing lanes), through stationary traffic, at a red light. I despair.

Classic left hook by a red Mazda yesterday morning on Slateford Road - but with a difference: the victim was a Volvo B9TL i.e. a bus. Car driver had MGIFed past the bus as it was already in the act of moving away from the Moat Drive stop, only to then dive across the front of the moving bus on to Gorgie Park Road.

Worst intentional close pass I've ever seen today, against a cyclist coming towards me near Inveresk. Driver swerved around the cyclist, just missing them and blasted their horn at the same time. Like a stunt out of Fast and Furious. Big souped-up car. Tiny p***s.

@ECC not sure about the reactions as I do wonder if I should have started braking earlier rather than trying to manoeuvre out the way. I also could have been going slower myself (Strava had me doing about 24mph just before the incident).
You live and you learn I suppose!

Would you prefer the mods keep a tighter brief* on things?

25/75 rubbish cycling / driving this afternoon.

Heading South along Clerk Street when a driver decided to left hook the cyclist in front of me, so they could turn into Rankeillor Street.
The driver was indicating left when they "overtook" us (they ended up not being fully in front when they started to turn). I held back, but the other cyclist who was going along Clerk Street kept going up the inside and had to swerve out of the way. The driver stopped just before the turn, causing me to have to stop as well, despite me also turning left.

Then of course they drove up Rankeillor Street at about 10 mph, so I got fed up and overtook.

Video in the next day or two.

Not entirely sure I agree with the 25/75 blame attribution on that one.

10/90 maybe? Looking back at the video, the car starts indicating later than I remembered, the timing is similar to my incident last month on Leith Walk, maybe indicating a bit later.

Err more like 90/10 in my book .. from the video it looks to me like the bike is well behind the car when it starts indicating, but matey boy keeps pedalling...

Oh, I see. The driver indicates just as they pass the white van on the left. Yes, the cyclist keeps going, but the driver should give way to traffic in the inside lane, as the highway code says.

Not the best idea perhaps, but nothing wrong with it from a highway code / legal standpoint - not that different from a car pulling out from a side road into oncoming traffic. I really don't think this is more than 25% the cyclists fault.

Tuesday evening: a Rabbie's bus driver removing both hands from the wheel in order to clap, whilst his bus was moving, heading from Shandwick Place to Princes Street.

Tuesday's rubbish: birling downhill on Aberdeen's Market Street when a massive transit van parked facing uphill on the other side of the road suddenly roars into life and immediately u-turns into my path. RULE 2 and hauled on the brakes. Driver sees me at the last second and jams on his brakes and then looks annoyed because I'm still swearing and shaking my head. Yes, pal, I know you're "sorry" but a second or two later and I'd have been under your van, and I almost wiped out as it was.

Driver of a silver Range Rover reverses out of a driveway on the south side of West Coates into the path of oncoming cyclists. He then continued to reverse down the street before deciding to head off towards Roseburn. Perhaps my prejudice, but he was elderly and I got the impression he wasn’t in full control of his vehicle.

I’m prepared to bet he objected to the bike lane.

The driver in front of me on Mayfield Road tonight has either incredibly good or incredibly poor spatial awareness. They were in the right hand queue of traffic, and drove so close to the car beside them (which was stationary) that their wing mirrors passed one under the other. Lucky that the other vehicle was an enormous Volvo SUV.

RE earlier 101 / LRT buses post.

Having reviewed the bus cctv footage, the police today advised me they are satisfied that there is sufficient evidence for a Careless Driving charge (of the LRT driver), but also added that if I wished to continue with this, then I would be open to a charge of Dangerous Cycling (as I used by phone on my bike to take a pic of the bus 3m off my back wheel).

    So that seems totally reasonable.

Do the police not know that it's not an offence to use a mobile on a bicycle ...

This smacks of we can't be ersed so we'll scare you off!

Perhaps the Police meant that craning around to photograph something behind you whilst "in control of a vehicle but possibly not really in control" was dangerous.

I am not a lawyer, although WC is.
