My normal commute along the north side of George Sq is currently blocked by the Fringe, so I have taken to the cobbles of Buccleuch Place. This morning I was subjected to an extremely close pass from a white van. I suspected it would be wise to be wary of it when it failed to slow down as it emerged into the road, but the pass was extremely close, and scary on the cobbles. Needless to say I overtook it twice at lights going up Buccleuch Street.

2 close calls near Royal High school this morning as a couple of drivers forgot to look before coming out a side street.
Later on 1 mental MGIF driver who overtook despite a bus coming the other way. Even worse was the driver behind who started to do the same before suddenly realising that the bus driver (who had right of way) was not going to stop and that I was not going to smash into a parked car to allow his reckless overtake.
He had the cheek to hammer on his horn too!

Guy in shiny black landrovery thing obliviously turned left onto Lothian road from Morrison Street during the straight-on-only phase. Looked only mildly unsettled at the large number of pedestrians crossing on a green man that he had to slowly negotiate his way through.

Not one but two vehicles (a mid-sized truck and a sizable van) reversing into the small car park at the front of our building at Heriot-Watt for deliveries this morning as I was locking my bike to the rack right next to the entrance to the car park. If I was to lock my bike at the back of the building, both the outdoor bike rack and underground bike parking there are well away from reversing vehicles, but I then have to run the gauntlet of vehicles as I walk from the bike parking area to the rear door to gain entry. It's almost like bike parking was a complete afterthought.

Ours is full. Again. And asking about it we just get told it won't happen until a bunch of other building stuff happen. Maybe a year, maybe two. There are about 60 parking spaces, but they won't delete ONE to put in some more Sheffield racks.

Taxi driver has crashed into a pedestrian on corner of North Castle St and Queen Street. About an hour back. Pedestrian serious injuries and hospital. Taxi driver being treated at scene. Passengers apparently ok
Pictures looked like maybe Queen St still flowing.

One lane of Queen St closed as well the top half of N. Castle Street. Damage to the building and taxi looked nasty so can only hope the pedestrians injuries aren’t life threatening/changing.

I cycled up Old Dalkeith Road at the back of five tonight, so was enjoying filtering past the miles of queued single occupant vehicles when I noticed one driver in front of me was veering in and out of the bike lane. Well, veering as much as possible at 3mph. Unsurprisingly, they turned out to be texting at the time, so I helpfully pointed out that if they put the phone away they might manage to drive in a straight line.
I didn't actually catch the reply, so will assume it was "Yes, you're quite right, I'm very sorry."

The driver of the mobility scooter on the canal towpath who was approaching me as I was passing the Bridge 8 Hub this morning. Having been tipped off by a colleague only yesterday, I decided to cycle very slowly along the wide part of the path to allow them time to exit the narrower part ahead because it looked fairly clear that they were intending to take the full width of the path regardless of my actions. Even then, when they did reach the wider part of the path, they barely gave me any space when passing me. Their small dog was rather more considerate at least.

woman driver texting at morisson street, when i asked her to stop she rammed me, knocked me off and drove off ... passers by tried to stop her but got her registration. i think she nearly drove into one of them. thanks to the traffic warden, and the three passers by that came to my aid. dizziness cuts and bruises and a dented front wheel but otherwise unscathed.

Yep, I had a texter on George IV Br. this morning. Completely endemic.
Drew alongside his cream Fiat 500 for a bit and stared in, to which he eventually opened his passenger window:
ME: "Put that down!"
HIM: "What's it do with you, anyway. <rule 2> off"
ME: (raised voice) "It's to do with *my* safety. You are putting other road-users at risk"
HIM: Repetitive swearing to say "go away"So sick of this...
Just ban driving in town and be done with it.

@Ragingbike - That's absolutely appalling. I imagine however with the witnesses she's just bought herself a whole load of trouble? Charged with leaving the scene of an accident? Cycle Law to recover the damage to your bike and injuries? - Presumably via CL her insurers will be contacted?

@twinspark: Deliberately driving in to someone has to be dangerous driving, surely? Leaving the scene of the accident should be the icing on the cake (which part of me hopes she chokes on).
@Ragingbike: Really sorry/disappointed/borderline fuming to hear about your incident. Hope you and your bike are each feeling a lot less battered before very long.

Whacky races on Gogar Station Road this morning. In the space of a couple of minutes I had three close passes. Two were from taxis that were close enough to touch with my elbow, and in both cases the I caught up with the taxi in seconds as they had to stop at the narrow bridges. The other transgressor was a small car that overtook me into the face of oncoming traffic, causing the approaching car to have to slow down to avoid a collision.

going at quite a clip. Did consider dropping stuff from balcony as they barrelled underneath - but decided against.

Might be worth reporting to 101, especially if they're still doing it. I've done so in the past for off-road motorcycles being ridden along the WoL walkway and they did send a patrol to check it out.

@Ragingbike - Sorry to hear about that! My experience is that if there's actually damage or injury, the police tend to take it seriously (And that's the only time...)
As mentioned on Twitter; I heard back from the police about this one.
Apparently because I shouted "What are you doing!?" and knocked on the window, that counts as "prior interaction" and the police won't charge the driver. I already said I wasn't happy at that decision, and the officer dealing with it apparently spoke to a road traffic sargent, who agreed. The driver was given "words of advice".
I'm not sure who it can be "prior interaction" when it happens after the car passes inches from me, of course.
The driver claimed that I was blocking him (AKA following the traffic, keeping pace), and the officer mentioned that I was "in the second lane, not letting the car pass". I did point out that was because the road narrows up ahead and I get squeezed into parked cars - and regardless, I'm keeping up with the car in front, and there's no room to pass - I'm around 2m from the car in front.
The driver also wants me charged with vandalism for hitting his mirror (doing no damage). I maintain that I extended my hand in a "stay back" motion, whereupon the driver drove into my hand.
The driver also said that he was going to call the police to report me for my behaviour, but couldn't because I have no registration plate or anything. I'm certain that's nonsense; he was never going to report me, but wanted to try to get "even".
The driver also left the scene - there's been no mention of that from the police, apart from when they took my statement. Also, leaving the scene is counter to his argument that he was going to report me - if so, he would have stopped to at least talk to me.
I also got contacted by a reporter from the evening news, who wants to use the video as an online piece, saying "we're keen as I think there's a wider public interest in terms of how cars interact with cyclists". I've decided not to go with that, since I can imagine the form the comments will take, and I'm not convinced by the EEN's "public interest" about interactions between cars (not drivers, apparently) and cyclists.

The person in the Polo who overtook me going downhill on King Stables Rd on my way in this morning.
Gave me plenty of space however given that (according to Strava) I was doing around 25mph at the time and it's a 20mph limit they must have been going at well over 40mph to get past me!FWIW my average speed for the King's Stable Rd Sprint segment today was 21.9mph.

EdinburghCycleCam - that is ridiculous from the police, perhaps you should ask them what's happened to their close pass operation that they were blowing their trumpet about.
My close one today was at Sainsbury's garage where they seem to have an extraordinary large amount of drivers who drive with their eyes shut and don't give way.

@ragingbike please write a complaint to the area commander responsible giving th a link to the video and cc in councillors of your choice.
Especially on the rear view we can see that the vehicle was repeatedly driven at you - removing all space and putting you in danger.

Just submitted the following via the Heriot-Watt 'Report a Hazard':
As I was walking along the footpath between the Millennium Garden and the newish halls of residence at lunch, one of the small, orange Estates vehicles which was pulling a recycling/waste trailer was driven up the path from the halls of residence and rounded the corner onto the path towards the Millennium Garden at speed despite my being on the path already. The driver only saw fit to brake to stop when it became apparent that I wasn't going to step off the path onto the grass to let the vehicle pass. Quite why the driver didn't wait on the ramp up from the halls and give me time to pass by before proceeding but instead tried to bully me out of the way is beyond me... In the end I was left with no option but to step off the path to walk around the vehicle and trailer which was taking up the full width of the footpath. As a regular lunchtime walker and a cyclist on campus, I'm used to encountering Estates vehicles on paths (appropriately or otherwise), yet on the vast majority of occasions drivers make an effort to give way so I don't have any reason to complain!
