Tall SUVs baffle me. The purchasers of such things seem to think it allows them to see more but given the massive blind spots they generate in all directions around the vehicle I feel they are fooling themselves.

Do we need a rule regarding seeing the road 2m or less in front of you bumper.

@gembo Rather than absolute size restrictions perhaps you should consider volumetric permissiveness. You can have a slightly longer car on the condition that it is narrower. The circumference of the body could similarly be restricted.

This must surely get some prize for the most creative/ridiculous use of magic blinkers. I was in a car on the WAR approaching the lights by the turn into Morrison Link. The car I was in was in the left lane and the green had just come on. However, the car in front of us merged to the right and overtook the car that was stationary at the stop line. It turned out thus latter was just standing there with blinkers on while an occupant was outside the car, answering the call of nature against the wall.

Just back from another wonderful cycling tour in the Netherlands. However it did strike us, almost literally, that Dutch driving seems pretty much as bad as here. I'm disappointed in this, in that I'd kind of assumed that with so many cycling, motorists would have more awareness and be more benevolent to cyclists.

Bus passed me close enough to touch it. Pulled in front of me because the lights were red. Pointless and aggressive but not dangerous.

As I repassed to reach the ASZ ten seconds later I said 'Bit close mate' to the driver through his open window and his grim demeanour was enough for me to dob him in once I got to my cushy desk. Low tolerance today.

Heading north at Summerhall yesterday, I saw this:

The driver of the convertible had just overtaken the cyclist (lights were already red), who was following the cycle lane until forced out of it by the driver. I can't even begin to guess what the driver's thought process was. The cyclist appeared to be offering some words of advice.

@Frenchy - I've seen many cars think that is a car lane. Pretty unforgivable to force anyone from anywhere though.

I cycled up to Gracemount from Tollcross and then down to the commonwealth today. Had youngest on the front. Appalling close passes left right and centre. I can take it all but I cannot abide the disapproving shakes of the head for not cycling in a cycle lane which is full of cars, by passengers of vehicles that endanger our lives driven by entitled ****s

There are works on Slateford Road so Harrison Road is closed as a rat-run, with all the traffic displaced to Ashley Terrace. This morning at school drop-off time it was total carnage with solid nose to tail cars between at least the canal bridge and the Slateford Road junction. Hats off then to the two lads in the white van who dumped it with magic Park Anywhere blinkers on outside the corner shop on Cowan Road. Hats off also to the lorry that had to do the Margiotta delivery at 8.45 leading to Harrison Gardens being completely blocked to traffic in any direction.

Why is it when you call drivers out on a close pass they often react with 'I'm a cyclist too' as if that absolves them of dangerous driving. I'm looking for some good come backs on this. So far i have used

    'where's your bike?
you ought to be ashamed of yourself
    you're not wearing a helmet...
    so f**ing what

I need some more amusing and suitable retorts. All suggestions gratefully received

There's roadworks at the bottom of Clermiston Road North so several drivers last night just decided that there's no need to stop at red on Queensferry Road regardless if it is a green man for pedestrians.

Thankfully this was not the case this morning.

@pisoad I marvelled at how pleasant Harrison Road was without the rat-runners this morning. Especially since the road is closed-not-closed at the junction with Slateford just now so you can just cycle right on through...

6 weeks of that closure, then a rolling closure southwards until December until they reach the bridge.

    Excellent...

@MediumDave: six weeks! I'm hoping for some traffic evaporation. It has indeed become more pleasant to deal with Harrison Road, which is on my morning school run (it's amazing how many drivers pretend not to see you when you try to cross a road with a small child at 8.40), but Ashley Terrace is grim. What is really needed in the area is filtered permeability (aka big fat bollard, supplemented in one case with bus gate) in all the rat runs across the canal (Viewforth, Yeaman Place, Harrison Road, Ashley Terrace), but, well, this is Edinburgh.

The entire city of Edinburgh from Liberton to Leith. Nose to tail.

Top spot: a guy rolling a big cigarette on his open laptop while at the controls of a moving automobile outside Old College.

Told off a someone using their phone while rolling forward next to the primary school on Ashley Terrace this morning... Total indifference until I took out my phone to take a picture.

Heading through Longstone at a shade under 30mph, and a driver decides now would be a good time to overtake me, now being a nice straight stretch of road with a car coming the other way.

I pulled slightly wider towards the centre markings but it didn't discourage the overtake. Driver pressed the loud pedal and left me a good amount of space as he roared past, but left the other driver about 2 feet between wing mirrors.

Caught up with the driver a bit later and knocked on his window and had impolite words about his unbridled enthusiasm to make progress. I was told not to touch his car, and that I should've "got out of the [rule 2] way".

Driver drove more carefully afterwards when I pointed out the recording device.

Entitled rule two driver of Sb63fnp who overtook us then pull it causing me to hit them and crash into a bin. Thankfully older child was on pavement but younger was on my bike. "I was indicating" - was her defense. No corroborating evidence or witnesses and my remonstrations just will have labelled me as an angry scourge no doubt.

That's actually quite incriminating surely? Indicating never gives right-of-way under any circumstances.

Sorry to hear that, algo - it's incidents like that which cause me to wear cameras.

My friend came off her bike in Holyrood Park on Tuesday after a black 4x4 pulled out on her on a roundabout - while she was already on the roundabout, heading from Horse Wynd to Queen's Drive. She slammed on the brakes to avoid them and came off her bike. She's got a swollen knee and ankle (got taken to A&E, nothing broken, but the ankle is quite spectacular).

Driver left the scene, no other drivers stopped, and no witnesses or reg, so the police can't do anything. She's now looking at cameras too...

Black Isle. Cyclist suffered a severe brain injury, multiple rib fractures and spinal injuries. Driver didn't stop 'immediately' because he was 'in shock'. Driver lied in court about the sun being in his eyes. £450 fine and a 4 month ban. That'll teach him.

    That'll teach him.

The sarcasm is strong with this one.

Spinal injuries. Spinal injuries. The driver broke someone's [rule 2] back and gave them a TBI, and is docked a few days' pay.

@algo & @EdinburghCyclist - worth noting that SECTION 170 (RTA1988) requires driver to provide details of vehicle insurance, when the PRESENCE of that vehicle causes harm to persons or property. It is an offence if this information is not provided at the scene or within 24 hours at a Police Station.

Worth checking with CyclingUK or other organisation you may belong to on ability to make a civil claim, even where the driver cannot be traced, but you may have sufficient evidence (witnesses/video) to prove the case.

It may be using a touch screen the manufacturers should disable those when car driven as like using a phone

Driver next to me at traffic lights was playing with their phone when a police car pulled up behind them. Some pointing later, the passenger police officer told me they were about to pull them over for their faulty brake lights anyway.

Crazydriving around Mayfield Road near KB at the moment. Due to the road closure at Craigmillar Park. Yesterday buses trying to navigate the streets between that road and Mayfield Road - extra narrow due to parking of course. This morning a whole sequence of vehicles bounding out of Lygon Road onto Mayfield Road because the traffic in Mayfield Road was stopped. But none at all looked for cyclists in the LQBC(or pedestrians for that matter). Not important enough apparently.

It's rare that I use the LQBC but today the futility of the 20 zone was clear. Most vehicles were well above the speed limit, if not above 30 (there was a tailwind so I could tell). We really do need hard enforcement on the rules of the road.

Heading east on Dundee Street last night. It is dark enough that everyone has lights. I'm going to turn right into Gibson Terrace to get on to the canal towpath. There is a car waiting to come out of Gibson Terrace, and another two cars waiting to turn right into the cinema complex. I pass those two cars and pull right behind them, to wait while an oncoming car comes through, keeping half an eye on the car in Gibson Terrace.

Just as I'm about to move off a car comes flying through from behind me, completely on the wrong side of the road (i.e. to the right (from my point of view) of the two cars in the middle of the road) and zooms off to join the queue at the traffic lights at the Viewforth junction. I swear very loudly.

I just don't get what people who do stuff like that are thinking. They could easily have hit me or a pedestrian could have stepped out not expecting a car from that direction.

Yes, it is a 20mph zone.

Thank you to the woman who asked me if I was OK. I was, just a little bit shaken and very cross.

    @fimm

I've complained to @edinhelp about the road markings on that junction, which don't take into account cyclists' need to turn right into Gibson Tce.

They said they'd get the Roads Dept to look at it, but I doubt they'll do anything.
