neddie it isn't just cyclists who need to turn right there, drivers also do (indeed there was a car waiting to come out at the point I was wanting to turn in).

Loren Dolan was part of the British team that won bronze in the World Team Time Trail Mixed Relay.
    Then this happened:
    https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/dolan-blames-drivers-malicious-intent-for-crash-that-hospitalised-her/

""After returning back home to Devon, I was back training on home roads with my father on Tuesday," Dolan wrote. "Nearing the end of the ride, we encountered a frustrated driver, beeping on his horn behind us whilst riding single file. The man wasn’t able to pass immediately due to oncoming traffic on the other side of the road.

To seemingly display his frustration/anger for the hold up, he passed us with inches to spare. As soon as the driver was directly in front of us at 45kph on a descent and with feet to spare the driver slammed his brakes on. I’ve learnt since that the police have a phrase for it - 'punishment braking'.

Having nowhere to go I tried to squeeze down the outside of the car between a traffic island and the car with my front wheel centimeters from the car. Needless to say my back wheel just clipped the island throwing me over the top of the bike. The car sped off."

Dolan ... had to have surgery on her left shoulder, with a broken collarbone and substantial soft tissue damage among her injuries. "

    Re Fountainbridge

All good points, not helped by the permanent illegal parking outside the Fountainbridge Fry, though that could be down to Fountain Park patrons

This afternoon I suffered an unpleasant and utterly unnecessary close pass by a furniture removal lorry belonging to John Duncan Removals:

[+] Embed the video | Video DownloadGet the Video Widget

Note that I was doing around 24mph at the time of the pass (you can see my speed in kph on my e-bike controller) so the lorry must have been exceeding the 20mph limit for motor vehicles on that road to have done the overtake. It also appears not to have been displaying a registration plate to the rear.

    Worth reporting?

(The driver's impatience was rendered utterly futile when he discovered that he couldn't get this lorry round the turn in to Braid Farm Road in one go, and had to do a time consuming and awkward-looking shimmy to get round, blocking the road to four-wheeled vehicles in both directions in the process. He'd have had a much easier time going along Braid Hills Road and accessing Braid Farm Road from its eastern end.)

Likely police response: "Yeah, doesn't look good, but we can't actually say for sure that they were too close. We could have a word with them about their driving if you want."

Such long vehicles can give you The heebeegeebees when they pass so close for so long. See also tractors with trailers etc

A cargo vessel that ran aground on rocks off a Scottish island drifted off course while the watchman viewed music videos on his mobile phone, an investigation has found.

Don't discourage people from reporting to the police.

The more people that report, the more likely the police are to streamline/change their system

a big old beamer heading east bound for some reason veered across the road and hit a salon in Porty this morning and came to a stop about 20m along the road after taking a big lump out of the salon. Couple of fire engines, plenty of police in attendance but the driver was able to walk away.

Hard to see how that could have happened if the 20 mph speed limit was being observed. Plenty of photos on Twitter, didn't think me taking any more would improve the situation.

@ejstubbs - What Frenchy (and neddie) said. The police won't take any action on the speeding, because apparently they need to know the exact speed the other vehicle was going, not "faster than me" in order to charge them with speeding, and also apparently "speed cannot be the only factor in a careless driving charge", so they wouldn't be able to charge with careless driving either (And I doubt they'd say that the close pass merits careless driving).

Still worth reporting if you can be bothered, as neddie said, but I'd expect the usual response of no action being taken, or if you're lucky then the police might trace the driver and go and speak to them.

Definitely worth contacting the company, however - they're likely to do more than the police in this instance.

@ejstubbs I find that pretty terrifying to watch. I think perhaps those who don't cycle don't get the same shiver down the spine when they watch it. If the police do nothing and you don't get a satisfactory response from the company, it appears John Duncan removals is part of a bigger body of removals with this twitter account -

I really think that in this case trying to provide the driver with some training around how to drive around cyclists would be a very good idea.

Someone driving up Buccleuch St with their left wing mirror folded in. I pointed at it, they nodded, so I tried to unfold it. Unfortunately it was far looser than I was expecting, so I accidentally folded it all the way forward. The driver apparently thought I was taking the proverbial, as they then opened their passenger door to swear at me.

There are a few situations in life where helping seems like the right thing to do but as soon as you committed you realise it absolutely wasn't. I once pointed out to a guy that his bag was open and, in following a mumble or two back and forth, undertook to shut it for him. Fortunately I didn't get sworn at or worse, but it quickly occurred to me that it could easily have looked like I was just robbing him.

Wing mirror might have been broken, he might have been aware of this fact and you might have made it worse. More likely he was parked on the pavement and thought that folding in his mirror makes this fine...

Thank goodness for disc brakes as I would have crashed it I had blocks this morning.

Some erse decided to turn right across my path at Comely Bank as he couldn't be bothered to wait for a couple of seconds. What is the point in using lights and high viz if drivers just ignore you are there!?

Three drivers in the space of five minutes expressed disapproval with my road positioning. I'm considering this as a sign that my positioning was good.

@Frenchy Keep doing it - I wish I'd been doing the same this morning. Nearly left-hooked by a driver pulling in to park in a bus stop at Bruntsfield, then very nearly t-boned by a PHC who didn't even slow at the mandatory-stop Merchiston Ave crossroads, then 30 secs later a revving hatchback overtook me on a blind corner and met something large coming the other way (which I saw first so had fortunately hit the anchors). All three of these came within 2 feet of me.

Yes, some of our roads have poor designs, but 99% of driving is somewhere between just-ok and atrocious.

West Lothian cycle hub posted a clip from London I thought might have been staged.

Mercedes driver tries to skip traffic queue whilst waiting for a right turn by cutting down the cycle lane. A cyclist stands firm and tells him to go back, cyclist gets rammed a few times. Stays very calm, police arrive very quickly and issue a ticket and then ask the cyclist if he would like to press charges which he then does.

Mercedes driver very angry road rage exhibited but not with the throbbing veins and short hair, more your gangster accountant type

I would love an Indy march where everyone had to run. Spartans for independence or some such that You had to actually get into training for not just turn up as normal slightly hungover. Nicky S used to run or at least own jogging bottoms

Driver of a black car driving through Holyrood Park (where there's no street lights) at 7pm (When it's fully dark) without any lights (or hi-viz) last night.

And they drove straight past a marked police car, the driver of which presumably couldn't see them, since they made no attempt to stop them or signal to them in any way.

    Video tonight if I remember.

    BUT HI-VIZ!

EC - unfortunately nowadays society has a view as follows
cyclist - no high viz/helmet/lights = deserves everything bad they get

drivers - no lights - simple mistake, could happen to anyone

Shocking that the police done nothing!

I saw a brand new black Kuga (69 plate) drive all the way from the East end of Joppa all the way to the Kings Rd junction (where I turned off) with out any headlights on at about 7.30pm on Monday so it's contagious, despite me flashing my lights about 2 or 3 times and at least 2 cars going the other way doing likewise.
I'm assuming that a) the car is so new they haven't figured out how to work the lights and b) they went for the poverty spec model which doesn't come with automatic headlights.

or c) is a hire/pool car and they've not bothered to figure it out before leaving the car park

Even automatic headlights need turned on when the car is new and in my experience after the car has been serviced.

  28. @mcairney: "they went for the poverty spec model..."

That's a bit harsh don't you think? Not everyone wants/needs/justifies paying for all the bells and whistles.

@CycleCommute.CC I imagine it was a tongue in cheek comment, anyone who can afford a brand new car is far from poverty stricken.

Poverty spec is the term used in car reviews and magazines I think it can be used in a non pejorative manner. It just means the base model.
