  1. Oh well in that case, if car magazines use it it must be all right! ...

I was slightly surprised when my wife's replacement car (2010 plate) didn't have an automatic setting for lights and wipers when the previous one (2005 plate) did. I'd've thought five years was long enough for a feature to trickle down a few price points, but evidently not, even though the 2005 car had wing mirrors you had to manually fold in from outside the car and the 2010 one has a button inside the car to electrically evert them.

@winpig, are they the same make of car? I wonder if there is a patent issue at play with some of these more advanced features.

@Ed1 is probably the closest in his assessment. It's a term that's creeped into the vocabulary and in particular the base model of BMWs, Mercs etc. back in the day when they didn't even come with a radio as standard.
I remember having a 2005 Skoda Fabia Classic which still had windy windows and wouldn't go back to those days. I like my toys although I do draw the line at automatic gearboxes.
As noted earlier I doubt anyone driving around Portobello in a brand new Kuga is genuinely short of a few bob!

    @acsimpson Nup.
Also, the 2005 one was all electric windows, even the children's seats, whereas the newer one has hand-cranks in the back.
I find it odd that there's an alarm for opening the doors when the lights are on and reaching 10mph if one of the doors hasn't shut properly but no alarm for starting to drive with the wing mirrors folded in.

I get the impression that as it starts to get colder and darker things become more unpleasant on the roads. Today We were turning right out of Thirlestane Road onto Whitehouse Loan - waiting for some time. I ushered my eldest to turn right when there was a space, but there was a car coming south in the distance which turned out to be going much faster than I thought who thought the appropriate response to seeing two children on bikes crossing in front of him was to swear and gesticulate rather than employ the middle pedal. Usually it's ok to find a space in the traffic there and we get very few problems, but today seemed more hectic. It's true in retrospect given his speed I perhaps should have waited but I was already concerned as there was a car waiting directly behind us which seemed to be getting impatient and I suddenly felt quite vulnerable.

I think in general the roads are getting busier as winter approaches. I wish I could just ask these drivers to demonstrate a small amount of empathy though - do they do this with their kids? If not then please imagine what it might be like - and realise that in a massively flawed road system which we share, there are sometimes no good judgements - just less bad ones.

Massive amount of IDGAF driving on my commute today of which only about 3 miles is by road.

5 drivers failing to give way or pulling a stupid manoeuvre in the road without looking/caring.
    5 red light jumpers
    1 on a mobile

Forgot to link this last night.

From Tuesday: after 7pm, Holyrood Park, no lights, black car. The mind boggles. You can see how bad it was from just the video thumbnail...

You couldn't make this one up yesterday, in fact I'm still gobsmacked.

Pedestrian crossing at the Kings is on a green man when whizzing out of Gilmore Place across both crossings and the wrong way along Tarvit Street came a very fast motorbike.

I'm quite amazed he got away without hitting anything.

What type of bike, and did it have a number plate? Despite the efforts of Police Scotland there is still an underground coterie of feral trail bikers who can be pretty brazen in their journeys to and from the green spaces that they like to churn in to mud. Such activities seem to peak during the school holidays, though I believe the Edinburgh schools aren't off for another week.

Hi, it was a road bike. Definitely not a nicked trail bike. Looked legit but the speed the were doing meant no chance of getting the plates.

The rider's garb normally gives away if it's nicked or not. If it's a nice, powerful bike and they're wearing tracky bottoms, a hoody and no gloves, they are less likely to own it. I've noticed the specimens round my way have taken to wearing helmets - perhaps to blend in?

Amazingly, the person driving a transit van down South Bridge whilst on a video call was not the worst example of driving I saw today.

That honour belongs to the driver who turned right into West Richmond Street as I was heading south through the same junction, looking me right in the eye the whole time.

Nothing unusual about a Transit pulling out into my path on Leith Walk, forcing me to slam on the anchors.

But it was liveried 'Scorpion Safety Training'. I may suggest booking the driver onto one of his own courses.

Found myself yelling and gesticulating at a guy in a big white panel van yesterday morning. Because he was making a left out of Rose Street onto Hanover Street, crossing through pedestrians, with only his left hand on the wheel - because his right hand was clamping his phone. to. his. ear.

I was turning into Rose Street, so got a nice view of how very much he was not paying attention as he crossed a pavement at the end of a pedestrian zone in several tonnes of metal.

He looked flustered and pulled the phone away from his ear but as he drove off it looked like he went back to his conversation. Didn't clock livery or reg, but maybe associated with the resurfacing work outside Costwold etc.

I'm guessing that the schools are back today given the gridlock that I negotiated to reach the top of MMW.

Schools still off (for pupils). Roadworks in one northbound lane on Hanover St seem to having some impact. Got into a pointing duel with a jammed Lothian bus driver who deliberately (IMO) blocked the bike lane on George IV Bridge at the Chambers St t-junction.

Schools back tomorrow - should be interesting!

EDIT: Heriot's was back today so no doubt that had an effect at MMW

I don't think it is all Heriot's as GIV Bridge was a car park yesterday also (even more so than usual) and it was a staff-only day according to their website

@Murun Buchstansangur oh, ok. I was running somewhat earlier than usual this morning come to think of it so perhaps it was just the normal situation at that time...

Close one today at Comely bank as a woman in a jeep decided to come out despite not looking for traffic in both lanes. The only mitigating circumstances was the van in the left lane moving to the right to turn left! (Why can't people turn left from the left lane these days?).

I also had 2 other drivers failing to give way on Clermiston Drive but I wasn't going very fast so not as dangerous.

A police officer caused thousands of pounds worth of damage by crashing his patrol car into a set of traffic lights in Perth, a court heard.

PC Mark Chance overtook a cyclist, who was a colleague who had pulled out of the force's car park 50 metres away.

From last week - two failed "must get in front"s - one minor one at the roadworks on Corstorphine Road, and then one 5 minutes later coming up the the bride on Russell Road.

Both drivers aborted their overtakes to avoid driving into the traffic island and bridge, respectively.

Edinburgh Cycle Cam, is that your only rear light? It has quite a slow flash on it.

@fimm It is - it's a pulse rather than a flash - it's pulsing from normal brightness to high brightness. The normal brightness doesn't light up the pannier much, but it's still very visible.

3 motorists today demonstrating that red is the new amber.

It's funny to think that when I learnt to drive in the 80's amber generally meant stop unless you were practically at the white line!

"A heavily pregnant woman was killed weeks before she was due to give birth when her car was hit by a driver who lost control at more than 100mph."

The dashcam video from the lorry is truly frightening.

"The coroner ... ruled Mr Barton died as a result of a road traffic collision."

I'd have been tempted to rule that "Mr Barton killed himself through his own thoughtless stupidity, and illegally ended the life of an innocent third party in the process". Why the need to sugar-coat the facts? (Especially since he had actually recorded a verdict of unlawful killing for the innocent party.)
