This morning, at the Cameron Toll junction, heading North from Liberton Road into Craigmillar Park / Lady Road, here. I was in the middle lane due to a number of buses and highway maintenance lorries in the inside.
The lights turned to green, whereupon highway maintenance lorry who was in the right hand lane took the corner pretty wide - certainly wider than is needed to get around the traffic island, and scraped along pretty much the whole length of the car in front of me who was going straight on (and was already on the left edge of their lane), showering bright yellow wheel-nut caps all over the place.

Lorry driver turned into Lady Road. I followed the car driver who stopped on Craigmillar Park, and gave my details since I had it all on camera. A police car happened to come past a minute or so later and I grabbed them to let them know what had happened too.

Apparently the car wheel is damaged, so the driver has had to get the car towed, and the lorry wasn't there when she or the police went to see - I assume the lorry driver just assumed the collision wasn't that bad and the car driver had left, but they certainly didn't come and check while I was there.

Not a great start to the week for that driver...

    @laidback

Trouble is my twitter account is not anonymous and last time i tweeted a complaint about a driver i ended up being charged by the police and PF...costing me £8k in lawyers fees ...as a result of a tweet. Totally spurious charges.. eventually dropped but sometimes its who the driver knows...or has paid.

@miak - did think my advice might not be good in some instances (!)
That's a huge legal charge - much more than many fines for criminal behaviour.

@LaidBack you need to pour yourself a stiff drink and then speak to @miak in person about that one....

@edinburghcyclecam I was on the 47 bus that briefly stopped to speak to the driver. Saw you pointing out headcam had recorded it all.

Couldn't work out what had happened, given there was only one car and the side of the car was scratched all the way along.

@dk1 - Ah, one for the spotted thread!

I didn't catch what the bus driver was saying, presumably something about their CCTV which can be requested, or maybe she was offering herself as a witness too.

    [Slightly off-topic] @algo, @LaidBack, @miak - there's a good chance for that: https://twitter.com/ABeardWalks/status/1226864083842064384

Now that the junction from Teviot Place to Forrest Road has reopened there's a little less traffic chaos there during my morning commute, but the left-turn lane on Gilmore Place right at the King's Theatre Junction is now shut, promoting additional traffic chaos there! I managed to forget this for my cycle back into town from the picket at Heirot-Watt and ended up in the ASZ at the front of the queue (from where I managed to have a chat with Luke from Biketrax who was passing on foot and was admiring the MTB that he had sold me), only to then be honked at by the driver of the vehicle behind when the left-turn light came on because I obstinately waited in position while indicating right. They quickly lost their patience completely and drove around me to the right to then turn left (luckily nothing was coming in the other direction at that point...) moments before my light also turned green and I could turn right.

I heard that in NI during the troubles one of the the most vulnerable places for soldiers was when re-entering their barracks.. the right turn into my driveway is getting like that.

Moved into an ASL on Queensferry Rd to turn left. The VW driver behind the box was holding a glass tumbler full of liquid in their hand. I turned left and proceeded up a hill indicating and moving right to immediately take a right turn into the next road where upon after 20 m i would turn into a driveway. Between the junction and the driveway the VW driver cut the corner at speed overtaking me ...missing me by inches and sped off down the road... shaking followed them and put on my full beam where upon they sped up to over 40mph in a 20 mph zone... they took a side street and i guessed correctly which one and found them parked up ...lights on ...engine running. I didnt approach. No idea of driver gender but anyone willing to endanger my life like that...and then speed away knowing what they'd done....while i assume drinking some form of liquid. Took a picture of the licence plate and pedalled home. Question is what to do ... police as usual will do nothing, after all I still awaiting call back from one hit and run and one bus hit and assault by driver all with witnesses, video and photos.... my better half suggests i stop cycling ....

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/education/drivers-slammed-abusing-parents-they-enforce-edinburgh-school-traffic-restrictions-2008390

PROTECTIVE parents got so fed-up with drivers flouting a traffic ban around their kids’ school - they took to the streets to enforce it themselves.

The band of 15 mums and dads take turns to don high vis bibs and put out cones to block-off the road outside Sciennes Primary each morning and Friday afternoons.

But mums have told how mean motorists have subjected them to torrents of abuse - while some have even got out and kicked away cones.

T*xi driver who looked in my direction and either (1) didn't see me or my 1100 lumen front light, or (2) performed the most nonchalant right turn across me. Who gives a [rule2]. Forced me to brake and turn slightly into the side street with him to avoid a collision. Thinking about investing in a bikecam.

@CocoShepherd: I can obviously recommend a camera. Much better to have one and not need it that need one and not have it.

T*xi driver this evening in Holyrood Park who honked at me, then gave me a load of abuse for cycling safely in the road while he was stuck in / taking part in some sort of car protest where everyone drives to Holyrood Park and then crawls along with their engine running.

Apparently the council has spent an absolute fortune building cycle lanes in Holyrood Park, and I should use them even if there's pedestrians in them because "it's better that you drive into a pedestrian than be on the road".

Reported to the licensing department due to his constant abuse and swearing at me with a passenger in the back.

That is really shocking. He can't surely believe that garbage that came out of his mouth. I'm sure he will be thoroughly embarrassed and ashamed of himself when he sees/hears that back again. Or will he...

Much better to have one and not need it that need one and not have it.

    My thoughts exactly.

I can obviously recommend a camera.

Could you go as far as to recommend a particular make and/or model of camera to those less experienced than you?

The two cameras I use are the Drift Ghost 4K for forwards-facing / helmet mounted, though it's pretty pricey (~£300). It can do 2.7K at 60 FPS, and battery lasts a couple of hours and can be swapped out for a 6 hour one. I have however sent the camera back twice now (this is the 3rd) because it keeps having issues where it just won't turn on in the morning, and usually behaves strangely beforehand - switching on and off constantly, making random beeps, and similar oddities.

The rear one is my old rear camera, which is a bit dated now - it's a Shimano CM-1000. I can't remember the resolution it records in, I think I run it at 720p / 60 FPS. Battery originally lasted about 90 mins to two hours, now lasts an hour, and isn't replaceable. I don't really think I'd recommend it.

Both of those cameras are pretty small, which I like - the last time I looked at GoPro, the cameras were massive and made you look like a tellytubby.

I've also heard good things from others about cameras from e.g. Aldi which are much cheaper, but do the job just as well, just a little lower quality.

tl;dr - I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend either of the cameras I use! The Drift is very good quality for the price and is nice and small, which is why I keep getting replacements.

Liveried white van driver, with opaque rear windows, who suddenly decided the route ahead of him on the High St was blocked. This left us trapped behind him in his blind spot.

He then proceeded to reverse into us to allow an oncoming lorry to pass. Cue much shouting from us and furious push the bike back using feet on the ground. I think we may have shocked a few people on the High St with all the shouting.

He remained completely oblivious to what he had done until I pulled up alongside and explained.

He apologised and we all remained calm. But even so, how can anyone stop this happening again...?

@ECC: The latest generation of GoPros are smaller than the originals, though I don't know how they compare to the Drift or others.

The way to avoid looking like a tellytubby is not to wear the thing on your helmet. Apart from anything else that can be an injury risk in the event of an unexpected rider-tarmac interaction (the rumour is that Michael Schumacher's horrible skiing injury was caused/exacerbated by a helmet mounted action cam). It also avoids the footage going all over the place every time you do a shoulder check or similar. That said, handlebar mounting can be almost as bad for wavy video. I don't think anyone has yet come up with a really acceptable solution for mounting a front-facing camera to bike or rider. I am currently experimenting with a chest mount, but that has its own drawbacks.

I use a Fly6 at the back which produces acceptable if not completely brilliant 1280x720 video at 30fps and has pretty good battery life. I believe the Aldi one was a clone of that. I did try the Fly12 for the front but, on top of the wavy footage due the handlebar mount, I didn't like the dazzle-prone integrated light (and if you tilted the thing downwards to reduce the dazzle risk, you ended up with a video mostly of the road).

I like the idea of these 360 degree cameras that you can post-process to pan/zoom to a "standard video format" in any direction you like.

    I think Garmin do one.

@ejstubbs - Yeah, I am tempted by a chest mount, I know at least one Edinburgh cyclist with one: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3v4CCwsEFT3hHDirRkioTg/videos

I prefer a helmet mount personally, because it points where I'm looking, meaning I can capture things that happen to the side of me easily. Plus, I find that the video lurching sideways when I shoulder check is actually a good thing, since it shows that I am in fact looking and am aware of my surroundings - something the police have mentioned before when looking at some of my videos.

Two more drivers getting reported to the police this evening, for going through a red light - which had been red for 4 or 5 seconds when turning right here. Both of them drove at pedestrians crossing the road, which is why I'm bothering to report it. At least they didn't blast their horn at them I suppose...

The drivers are clearly in the wrong, but I always wonder whether that road design is actually legal (or sensible!) The zig-zag lines suggest it's a pedestrian crossing - and it did used to be - but the stop line has been moved to project the turn, making it a junction.

They should either move the stop line forward and get rid of the cycle crossing line, do a buildout at the end of the cycle crossing line or move the stop line back a couple of meters, put an ASL in and get rid of the zig-zags, ideally adding separate lights for cyclists coming out of the lane. For the benefit of all users, road designs shouldn't be this ambiguous.

I wonder if this is an indication of the quality we're likely to see from future improvements tacked on to the side of resurfacing projects.

@jonty - the google street view is actually out of date; the stop line has been moved back about 2 or 3 metres, so it's clear it's a junction. Both drivers drove straight over the stop line before starting to turn.

I agree the junction could certainly be clearer, but I'm pretty certain these drivers knew they were going through a red light (One was a private hire car for a start, who as a "professional driver" should know better).

This morning - PC Nod in Police Scotland Vauxhall (SF64OYY).

No siren or lights but great sense of entitlement and a lack of awareness. Pulls out in front of traffic to do a switchback right turn at Liberton Road/Mayfield Road forcing cars to brake suddenly and me to fire on the brakes to avoid hitting the vehicle in front and the car behind squashing me.

Further up the road on Causewayside a few minutes later, the same police vehicle attempts to overtake a cyclist who is indicating to turn right on to Duncan Street.

    Semper Vigilo indeed.

Although i no longer film I used a gopro hero for years and apart from the clicking the helmet mount did allow me to film assaults and also gave some spectacularly high quality viral content re-used by broadcasters ...given my experience with the polis and courts i reluctantly don't film anymore

I suggested to a van driver engrossed in his smart telephone that he might want to watch the road using the universal Robert de Niro gesture. He flicked me the Vs old skool so all good.

Told off a driver for using his phone while in charge of a ton of dangerous machinery.

Was it on here that I commented that I couldn't remember the last time I was beeped at? Maybe it was making the comment that has made me notice, but I've had a few recently.

Oh and some man in a truck yelled something this morning after we'd all waited for a couple of cars to turn right - the only word I made out began with "F" and broke rule 2... (thankfully I'd turned right and the truck went straight on...)

Drivers have been stopped for speeding in Edinburgh as road police enforce the new 30mph limit on Maybury Road.

Two drivers were stopped by officers in the area yesterday.

One was doing 66mph, while another was travelling at 61mp”

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/crime/drivers-maybury-road-stopped-police-speeding-new-30mph-zone-2073299

Maybe need for average speed cameras?

Sadly 2 drivers is just the tip of the iceberg. It's a very rare occasion when someone doesn't come past you significantly over the limit.

Had a proper EdinburghCycleCam close pass here, just like him. Close enough and fast enough for me to fear Death. Caught the guy up here and enquired what he was up to, pointlessly.

If I'd been thinking straight I'd have put my D-lock through his windscreen and scuttled off down NCN1.

Driving instructor texting during a driving lesson this morning. If they'd been paying attention, they could have told the driver not to pass cyclists so closely, too.

Searching for the company's name only brings up a result from London, though.

Privileged muppet making the sharp left turn from Bells Brae onto Dean Bridge, not looking in the slightest, iPhone to side of face, while i'm coming downhill at pace turning onto the bridge.

No time to brake so quick filtered into slight gap between polo-necked muppet and oncoming lane. Muppet remarkably unrepentant and very fortunate indeed that i was already deep diving into an absurdist mood.

    Muppet.
