So I finally caved and posted my first close pass clip on Twitter. Not the first but probably the worst since I got my Cycliq:

I'll never understand why people do this - they're seconds away from having to slow down/stop at the roundabout anyway!

Looks like they came very close to the bus too.

Many otherwise normal people enter a hypomanic state when at the wheel of an automobile. Many persons are impaired from drug use, personality disorders and mental illness.

The mix of wild abandon and sudden over-caution leads me to suggest that this person is drunk.

@IWRATS because of the wobble at the exit @mcairney was taking - could be. Bad one. Polis in S Lanarkshire booked a driver who did this very manoeuvre (sans roonaboot)

Yes, the wobble. Judgement of risk, benefit and capacity all gone.

Also no signal for either manoeuvre.

@IWRATS another crucial detail there. I think I agree he was out of his gourd. Always worrying

The ten empty vodka bottles on lang whang from Carnwath to Tarbrax are also a worry but I would not often consider going down that way at night

He/she/they definitely overcooked their entry into the roundabout judging by the frantic braking and body roll of the car. I'm just glad I was going straight on and not turning right!

Yes I was relieved for you just watching the video

Most drunk drivers used to be male, that has maybe changed?

Must not have been paying attention to rear end the car in front

    Reads like fiction...

It is alleged Orman used a loaded shotgun to kill Welsh in Chester Street in the west end of the city last year.

The 29-year-old is also accused of driving at speeds up to 123mph on the Edinburgh Bypass on April 22, 2019 – where the limit is 70mph – and failing to stop for uniformed police officers.

He is also alleged to have driven on the opposing side of the carriageway of Clovenstone Road “in excess of 92mph”, where the limit is 30mph.

The charges state Orman continued the wrong way along Hailesland Road at 80mph; Murrayburn Road at 101mph; Longstone Road at 80mph; Lanark Road at 98mph; Slateford Road at 90mph – where the speed limit drops to 20mph; and then on to Gorgie Road at 95mph, Stenhouse Road at 90mph, and Stevenson Drive at 88mph.

Orman is then said to have driven at “excessive speed and negotiate a roundabout in an anti-clockwise direction” at Balgreen Road before heading along Dalry Road at 74mph.

    From today's National.

Coming back from my lovely leisure/self-care ride yesterday. Almost home and round the corner on the wrong side of the road comes a big black faux-by-four. I decline to dive onto the pavement.

4x4 Man: [Rule 2] you looking at?
    IWARTS: You.
4x4: You never even tried to get out of the way!
    IWARTS:
4x4: Oh, you're smiling, you're laughing at me?
    IWARTS: Yup.
    4x4: {Obscene hand gesture}
IWARTS: COME AND GIVE US A KISS!

It doesn't say he shot him...

@iwrats I wish I had that self control. I generally end up trading insults and even more angry than when I started.

The thought processes that could lead to them saying this are fascinating.

Descent Denied Dude: You’re in the middle of the road mate
Ascent Impeded By Gembo Driver: Wherd’you rule 2 expect me to be

Gembo - Smugface grinding in granny[nothing else the old boy could do and he sure as rule 2 was not stopping for someone who had driven more than 5 miles to take his leisure. Err or anyone else, might neve have started again]

Friend of mine knocked off by a t*xi driver who pulled out without looking. Friend tried to swerve towards the middle of the road out of the way of the t*xi but of course said t*xi driver then pulled a U-turn so wiped him clean out.

Broken wrist, bike, helmet and all his equipment completely totalled.

Did the t*xi driver stop? Nope.

Police, more police and the licencing people at the council. That's several crimes.

Get the police and ensure they retrieve and check relevant CCTV to nail the taxi driver

    Yikes.

Makes the driver of the Audi A4 YG16 PRN, who nearly took out two oncoming cyclists and two oncoming cars while pulling an impatient overtake on yours truly, look comparatively mild. They were stationary for so long at the next junction I was able to catch up with them and take a photo of their car...

@CocoShepherd - must be traceable as others say.
CycleLaw will be happy to nail them.

@fimm - head to head overtaking - particulary bad on Lanark Road the other day for me as well. Make no mistake, driving is a sport for these (mainly) guys and they don't like sharing the road with anyone.

It seems to me that drivers are angrier and in more of a rush in the current lock down conditions. I have had numerous angry honking incidents in the past couple of weeks for no other reason than I happen to be cycling on the open road and not obstructing anyone. My wife who is commuting to the ERI several nights a week has said the drive has become much more stressful of late with people driving at really high speeds and taking bigger risks on corners.

Cycled into town for the first time in weeks. I don't know if I have lost my gradually-built up tolerance of poor driving or if the driving is just worse than it was a few months ago.

4 or 5 close passes just on Ferniehill Drive. One from an ambulance driver, with oncoming traffic.
Van driver cut me up to turn left up Kirk Brae (I was going straight on from the left hand lane, which to be fair wasn't my best ever idea).
Close passes going up Liberton Brae.
    Tailgated on Captain's Road.
    etc.

Spotted half a dozen or so drivers on the phone, too. Which was a behaviour that seemed to disappear when traffic was reduced in April/May.

I cycled into town today, did a couple of laps of Arthur's Seat and then cycled home. 30km total, 20km of that on roads which were open to motor vehicles.

Now I could just be hyper-aware at the moment, given the vigil this morning and the fact I've not been cycling anywhere near as often as normal, but it really did feel like I was sharing the road with an unusually high number of numpty drivers.

The people overtaking me on Queen's Drive (as I cycled at 18mph) were bad enough. The person tailgating one of them (less than 0.5s gap), and hammering on the horn even once they were past me, was something else altogether.

Close passed at a gap in the wands on Old Dalkeith Road.

Someone else on Old Dalkeith Road tried to pull out in front of me as I did 25mph down the hill.

Someone attempted to overtake, with lots of VROOM VROOM, in the middle of Cameron Toll gyratory.

Overtaken and cut up 5m from the back of the traffic queue on Ferniehill Road.

I'm fairly sure that most of the above incidents would, in other jurisdictions, lead to the driver getting points on their license. I'm struggling to believe that five such incidents in 20km of open-road cycling is just bad luck or me being precious.

Police officers in an unmarked car had also pulled someone over on Holyrood Park Road. DVLA website says the vehicle lacks a valid MOT.

Also got shouted at for cycling on the road instead of the cycle path coming up Queen's Drive. Weirdly, though, it was a pedestrian using the path that was shouting at me.
