Whoever caused a lamppost by the Roundabout on Maybury Road to disappear overnight on Christmas eve definitely warrants a mention here.

It's been a while since I've see an incident there (this might be the first since the 30mph limit was introduced).

Why are there so many lazy car drivers that instead of finding a space on the road drive on to the pavement and park on the grass opposite Corstorphine hill!

Why are there so many lazy car drivers that instead of finding a space on the road drive on to the pavement and park on the grass opposite Corstorphine hill!walking to their nearest hill to sledge drive there instead.

Especially at the moment when popular sledging slopes are likely to be the busiest places in town.

I was pretty certain this was satire but I think this person has posted about cycling before. Reminds me of the "Soccer Mum" character from Death to 2020.

@algo: I think that's the first time in a loooooong time that I've (a) bothered to read the comments under a chipwrapper article, and (b) basically agreed with all four of them. Makes a significant change from the usual comments under an EEN "person parking illegally has a hissy fit when caught at it" article.

Oh dear, Not now small ranger, I am not in the mood. I may also have shouted some words I can’t remember at the poorly paid official who was only trying to do his/her job whilst I was 100 per cent bang to rights in the wrong. As this was unpleasant I am staying in bed today with a wispa whilst the poorly paid official is out again in the cold being abused by the general public for doing their job.

And most amazingly as I cannot think of anything else to say I am writing an opinion piece for the ex Johnson Press for which if I am paid I will give none of it to the functionary I abused for doing their job

There is so much that is odious about that article I don't even know where to start. @Stickman thanks - seems yet again Charlie Brooker's satirical characters are a bit close to the bone. @ejstubbs - totally with you - I didn't even look out of habit but the entitlement is hard to miss - glad it's even picked up in the EEN comments.

One minor section which irritated me was:

We took the car because we had large bags of feed for the swans, a change bag, a sledge, a buggy, snacks and everything else apart from the kitchen sink.

I think pretty much everyone on here has walked (or cycled) longer distances laden with similar.... it's hardly "everything but the kitchen sink". Not that long ago @wingpig turned up at my door with a fine large bicycle attached to his rucksack. I didn't check but it's highly possible he did actually have a kitchen sink in his bag.

One could easily strap swan food? To a sledge and pull it through the streets? Tho I imagine was just some bread crusts?

As noted at the time, it's easier to attach a bike to a rucksack if there's something else in the rucksack to give it a bit of spacing. Both times I've taken a frame in to have a headset pressed into it on an empty rucksack they've fouled my elbows.

Next week - Why did those jack-booted thugs employed by Waitrose march me out of the shop for parking at the deli counter? They surely can't expect me to carry ham AND cheese to the checkout!

We are now governed by journalists Johnson and Gove so go easy with the venom - Ms Matthews may be first/prime minister in due curse. (Leaving that typo.)

@wingpig, sounds like you did have the kitchen sink then.

Holyrood Park has space for people - as long as they are in cars. Something pathetic about having to constantly walk off and on pavements to avoid people under the constant threat of traffic. Most just passing through from what I could see. Less traffic should require less road space? What exactly is the purpose of this park?

Lovely Holyrood Park on a winter day. Home of the 'essential car journey' and a few walkers, cyclists and runners. @welovehistory
@carfreeholyrood It would be so nice to allow this space to be shared safely rather than being squeezed on the narrow pavement. @urbancyclist @scotgp https://t.co/7p00kRcQ8K

'Bob's Garage' white van. Passenger sparks up big doobie and the driver fishtails the van across the icy road onto the pavement.

Heading up to the mini roundabout at Polwarth on shopping trip.
On UA so not too slow but have driver behind. I get to the zebra and look over shoulder as thinking about doing U turn back to Margiotta.
Imagine my surprise to see that 'advanced' driver has decided to go straight at roundabout onto 'wrong' side of road past traffic island at zebra, overtaking me and saving nanoseconds.
Was quiet road at the time.
I've seen this a few times in other places (eg George IV Bridge) as drivers give me space or go round double parked vehicles.

Cruising down bsck from Aldi yesterday in the UA with child #1 (in age but variable in ranking) and a large amount of heavy shopping. I moved out to ride past the large number of cars parked outside "Dreghorn Woods", or "Covenanters Woods" as some locals demand it be known (few maps show this name - a discussion for another thread), very close pass from a small black car for no reason at all.

I was going about 28MPH and he must have had to go well above 30 to overtake as he set off the "30mph warning" flasher at the park there. Then there was nothing coming so absolutely no reason to pass so close. He was gripping the steering wheel and leaning forward in a pose I describe as "the mole" which suggests some challenges with sight, nervousness, or just horrific posture.

The main frustrating thing was I raised a hand in mute frustration, and then slapped it back down onto the handlebars transmitting a wobble into the steering and giving the UA front wheel a proper speed wobble. It handled it very well and a gentle brake on the rear settled it down, although meant I lost previous momentum.

Suspect speed wobble due to heavy front load and said slapping on handlebars. Interesting experience. Pleased I wasn't killed by car during discovery.

Had a cracker today at Cockenzie Power Station. Was approaching a pair of cyclists who were 2 abreast and going a bit slower than me. I do a quick shoulder check, nothing behind me apart from a white SUV about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile away. So I put a little bit of a sprint on, pass them and then get back into my pedalling rhythm when about 30 seconds later said SUV (a Kuga on closer inspection) pulled along side, wound down the window and the driver proceeded to give me dogs abuse for not indicating when performing my overtake. I pointed out that my intentions were pretty obvious unless he expected me to go through the other 2 cyclists and given how far behind he was it had no impact on him and that I likely wouldn't have indicated if I was in a car in the same situation. He continued his foul-mouthed tirade until we got into Cockenzie at which point he wound his window back up, made a half-hearted swerve towards me and booted it along the road at a fair bit more than the posted 20mph limit (confirmed as I had Komoot running and according to it I was also going above the limit!).
An utterly bizarre overreaction, it might have been scary if I didn't find the whole thing so darned hilarious. Why do these things happen when I'm not running a camera??

Unfortunately due to the lack of said camera I didn't catch a number plate.

Interesting? On a bike or in the car? I actually remember getting told off by my driving instructor for habitual signalling!

mcairney he was cycling. He looked back, car a long way back, he went round the slower cyclist, the car was then revealed to be a police car the driver of which pulled him over for a chat...

No quote from South West Edinburgh in Motion? Silence from East Craigs campaigners. Cllr Webber turned down the opportunity of getting her name in the paper? No comment piece from Cllr Mclellan decrying scofflaw motorists?
