Obviously not defending the driver at all, but the (amateur) incident investigation officer in me wonders if the driver thinks the cyclists are together and that they are both turning left. Not sure why the camera cyclist is indicating at this point, not really necesssary given the circumstances. Just a thought.

The camera cyclist is indicating to turn left because he is going to turn left?

So much for "Spaces for People" when the council drivers try to wipe you and the oncoming traffic out! https://youtu.be/BHJOa5xR-I0

Yes @fimm. I know that. But who is going to use at information ? There is nobody ahead to see it & the driver behind might interpret that as both cyclists turning. The left turn signal doesn’t impart information that can be useful to anyone.

@stiltskin: ...the driver thinks the cyclists are together and that they are both turning left

Even if the driver did think that, they should still have stayed behind the cyclists until all of them had completed the turn at the junction and only then overtaken if it was safe to do so. At the point when they started the overtake they had no view around the corner to see whether or not there was any oncoming traffic approaching along the side road. Whatever they thought the cyclists were doing, there was no justification whatsoever for even attempting an overtake there.

Yes @ejstubbs as I said, it is still rubbish driving in any event. But as with any incident, there are many potential causes & in my view, the camera bike signalling may explain why the guy pulled a left hook. Personally, I never signal (unless I really have to) when I am in close company with another bike, for this very reason.
Of course the driver may just be an impatient psychopath who didn't care that he nearly took out a cyclist, we will never know. I'm just trying to point out what can potentially be learned from the incident.

One close and one very close pass from Akela Comstruction lorries this morning. I am writing to their Group Leader (Boy Scout joke). On the A70. The6 are building hoses in a Balerno field so up and down a lot.

Two friendly waves from chap driving bin lorry (I stopped for it twice on Cockburnhill road)

regarding the granton psycopath. My reading of the situation is that the driver behind planned to left hook the camera bike regardless of the signal. They hadn't looked beyond the first bike because it was more than 5m from the bonnet. The presence of the second bike was a surprise to them but instead of breaking they continued with the turn making it even wider than they might have otherwise. Psycopaths are going to psycopath and as far as MGIF behaviour goes there was nothing the camera cyclist could have done differently here to prevent the attempt on the lead cyclists life.

Approached Gilmerton crossroads just after lights turned red, and was going straight on. So I went into the ASL and stopped basically right on top of the giant painted bicycle. Perhaps normally I'd have positioned myself further to the left, but there was a driver preparing to reverse out of the layby on the left, so I made sure to steer clear of them in case they hadn't seen me.

A few seconds later the same driver pulled up on my left, and then undertook me when the lights turned green. A slightly odd discussion followed at the temporary lights 100m later, where the driver berated me for going straight on from the right hand lane.

    I remain confused.

Had an incident today on Restalrig Road South where a driver pulled over a blocked the road because I shook my head at him revving his engine and doing a close pass.

He wound down his window and shouted a barrage of abuse at me ("Why are you cycling down the road with a skateboard on your back") and when I had the cheek to respond to say I was allowed to do so he jumped out his car and started to come after me. I cycled off in fright and then he got in the car and chased me for a hundred metres or so, at which point I jumped off the road for fear I was about to get plowed down.

He caught up with me and pulled over his car again but I cycled in the other direction.

A Lothian Bus Driver saw the whole thing and was directly behind us catching the whole thing on CCTV. Spoke with him at the next stop who checked I was ok and gave me his vehicle number so I could get the footage.

I'm not sure an offence was committed but I've reported the incident to Police Scotland.

“I'm not sure an offence was committed but I've reported the incident to Police Scotland.“

Several, though whether the police see them as ‘serious enough’ remains to be seen.

It’s necessary to report such things, but sadly various people’s experiences have led them to believe ‘not worth the bother’.

    This needs to change.

Hope you get the footage easily/quickly.

Eep. Offence is possibly as simple as causing an obstruction, seeing as "driving a car at someone deliberately" doesn't seem to count.

If I was trying to lose a car there is probably head for the wee cut-through-thr-fence between St Triduana's rest and the Restalrig Gardens' Towers' garden.

Do get in touch with Lothian Buses ASAP - the drives for the CCTV footage only hold a day or two's footage, and it can only be accessed when the bus is in the depot.

Thanks for the concern all. I spoke to a customer service advisor at LB who assured me that the way to get the CCTV footage is through the Police and that he thinks that it is kept on record for "about four weeks".

@chdot I think you're right. There was multiple offences but the key thing here is whether it can be proven. The CCTV footage won't have recorded what he said to me or the tone of voice. I agree though, it's important that these things are reported - i suspect that thhe cases which are reported are only the tip of the iceberg.

These sort of incidents always make me question whether I was in the right, thankfully in this case the Bus Driver backed me up and gave me a bit of self-confidence. I asked for my thanks to be passed on when I called LB.

You can get the CCTV footage on which you appear, through a Subject Access Request.

    https://www.lothianbuses.com/cctv-policy/

I'd suggest that this is more likely to secure the footage prior to its deletion, than Police Scotland acting in time.

No evidence of anyone obeying the 20mph speed limits as I cruised at 20mph through the East Lothian coastal settlements, wind assisted. There really needs to be enforcement. And drivers need to grow up.

May or may not be driving related -

A 29-year old man was punched in the face by a man who was driving a white Mercedes SUV.

https://youtu.be/-bmceKvMRGY I'm pretty sure BF08 HGC was actually trying to kill me here. Even before the car door opened they were in touching distance of me and then sped off up the street despite the 20mph limit

    @mcainrney. Well handled.

This seems like the same mindset of the driver on the motorway slip road that is initially behind you but gets on the motorway first, overtakes you and closes the gap blocking your entry onto the motorway. Who knows what they are thinking (or more likely not).

@Moose It was suggested that I could have taken a more prominent position on the road (and this is pretty good advice). Thinking about it a bit more you'd really need to be in primary from the lights as getting into primary from secondary with a car bearing down on you is often impossible.

The good news is that I managed to spot the car door opening in time and was able to slow down/stop accordingly. I also decided I'd much rather be behind that particular driver than in front of them!

Didn't I read somewhere on CCE not too long ago that Police Scotland are now willing to accept video evidence of dangerous close passes? That one would qualify in spades IMO.

One of the longest headlines I have ever seen...

@mcairney, tricky one, but I would have been in primary from the lights there if I made it to front of queue/ASL in time. Porty High Street very narrow, no safe place to overtake there. Let the MGIF drivers beep their horns or shout from their open windows while the crawl behind you. Better that than squashed against a communal bin or parked car.

It's in today's report of the tribunal that the <rule 2> bus driver with the very long headline from yesterday now 'drives' for First Bus. Great.

    Dear Driver on Newcraighall Road,

Thank you for moving over a lane in order to overtake me this morning. Next time, please also make sure that there's no one driving in the other lane first?

    Thanks,
    The Cyclist.
