  1. I think it was me getting beeped today.

I was heading towards Tollcross from the Meadows, around about where the traffic starts to divide into two lanes before the lights. all the cars seem to be in theright lane, whereas I'm happily tottling along in the left lane. A car goes past on the right, but slowing for the stopped traffic ahead, and behind that is a BMW (I think) whose nose I see out of the corner of my eye, sort of straddling the lanes. Clearly they were thinking to whizz through the gap to get in front of me, but because of the slowing car ahead, well, I am the gap.

The lights ahead are red, everyone is slowing, she can go absolutely nowhere, and there's a beep of the horn. I turn to work out why on earth there's a beeping, and notice kaputnik behind me - so either she was beeping because she didn't like me riding with no hands on the bars (we were slowing, the lane was clear, my top needed shuffling), or she took offence at kaputnik's fancy new cycling garments (in fashionable understated grey).

Either way I actually think the beep was a reaction to a suddent realisation that her driving skills, and observation abilities, were somewhat lacking this morning.

For those who don't know this junction it's a blind corner, uphill, on a school route at 8.40pm. Forced us (and all the other traffic) into right hand lane i.e. making corner even blinder than usual. Couldn't care less 'I'm making a delivery'. even though there were safe parking/loading spaces not 10 metres away. Anyone know if this is actually a Garvald van?

Why do van drivers think they have some sort of magic special permission to stop where-ever they like?

Nearly got clobbered yesterday. Main road in Helensburgh, car pulled up on a minor road to go straight across, stopped, looked *at* me, and then pulled out when I was about 5 metres away.

Cue fistfuls of Avid's finest and a good blast from the Hornit, which finally made her notice me and apply her own brakes. We stopped about six inches apart - if she hadn't also stopped I'd have gone into her side.

She was somewhat shocked that she'd managed to miss a cyclist in daylight and with daytime running lights, so we left it at that.

Hornit has paid for itself now though, so small mercies.

from a colleague of mine on the POP FB page "Btw, I (and my son in the trailer behind me) nearly got run over by an ice cream truck on Edinburgh's North Meadow Walk (yes, that's bikes and pedestrians-only) last week. The driver was texting while driving and then got aggressive when I pointed that out to him."

@Darkerside Ha, I used to live in Helensburgh. The driving there is like nowhere else I have encountered!

Silver Passat overshot the pedestrian crossing at junction of Saughton Road / Stenhouse Road / Broomhouse Road and then got trapped on the "wrong" side of the white line when the lights turned red.

Then proceeded to attempt to reverse back over the toucan crossing while myself and another cyclist were using it. Came within inches of dismounting me into the other chap.

    Completely unneccessary and dangerous move.

So, I politely queried Garvald about the incident above, and they replied saying it would be passed to the appropriate manager. Which made me wonder if it was one of their own vehicles. I then replied saying 'I do hope it's not one of your own vehicles'. They then deleted the entire exchange. Lovely social media strategy eh?

    a decent reply:

Thank you for your comments and complaint. This morning I had nine fairly heavy chairs to deliver to our main office before 9am and I made a foolish decision to pull over and unload them as quickly as possible. This is not an excuse – I made a bad decision and I accept your points fully that it was blocking the uphill lane and caused a dangerous obstruction. I apologise fully for the inconvenience it caused. You have my assurance that I will find a more appropriate place to park a vehicle for unloading in future and will pass this on to all Garvald vehicle users. It was never my intention to cause an obstruction or to annoy any of our neighbours or supporters so I can only apologise again.

We also wish to apologise for giving the impression that your complaint was not being taken seriously on facebook. The page administrator was unfamiliar with the situation, and wanted to forward it to the appropriate managers for response. Rest assured that it was quickly sent to my attention.

Cycling to work today - going down Colinton Road at a fair pace in the middle of the left lane, with another cyclist in front (who coincidently turned out to be my old dad).

Cue the left hook by a wee hatchback to Craiglockhart Park. They barely touched the brakes when careering around the corner at 25mph. Thought for a horrible second two generations of us were going into the side panel. Twit!

Tonights incident was more bizarre than bad. Had come down Henderson Terrace and onto Gorgie road. Doing about 20 mph and was behind a black Vauhxall Zafira. I normally don't catch the names of cars but I was at his back left corner for some time as he wasn't going any faster. My bikey-sense had started to tingle that something just wasn't quite right here. Lo and behold, he puts his indicator on to pull in left as we're heading under the railway bridge at Tynecastle. He didn't slow down at all so he was at least being nice and giving me a decent warning. Now I'd been towards the left so I swished my head round and checked to pull out and overtake. What happened next went really fast....seen a taxi a little bit back, plenty of space and not getting any closer given my speed, so I pull out just as the Vauxhall begins to slow to pull in. No problems so far. Next, the taxi beeps, as I pull back in to the left in front of the Vauxhall. I got the impression he'd beeped at the Vauxhall pulling in as he came round the somewhat blind corner.

So, slightly hair raising overtake but I survived. Now still doing 20 along Gorgie road past the park when the taxi pulls alongside and the window lowers. Uh-oh. Except...the driver looked really apologetic and was saying 'I didn't see you...I didn't see you...' OK I couldn't read the conversation that well given I was also looking at the upcoming pinchpoint and also being shaken to bits on the potholes but he really didn't seem to be aggressive. Thing is, I don't know what he was sorry about, and I don't see where he was supposed to have not seen me. Maybe I got lost in the glare of the Vauxhall as he came round? I don't know. I sort of mumbled 'err...no problems then!' and gave a cheery thumbs up as he let me in front at the traffic island pinch. He overtook slightly later and that was the end.

For the avoidance of doubt on the visibility issue, here's how me and the bike are lit up:

At the back we have 2 Edinburgh Bikes 5 LED lights, one steady, one flashing on each side of a Smart Lunar R1. Since I value other peoples retinas I run the 2 little LEDs on the R1 only in town, saving the main 1 watt light for unlit roads. Also have a little 3 LED light on the pannier and a 1/2 watt light on constant on the back of the helmet. Up front, I actually have one of those absurdly powerful Cree XML T6 lights, again for the unlit roads and off in town. Main front lights are Raleigh RX1.0s at 3 watts each and they are bright - so bright I have them dipped down to splash light all over the road, again one constant and one flashing. On top of the helmet is a Electron micro 5, bright enough that there's no doubt that when I look back people have seen it.

Adding in the spoke straw reflectors and reflective sidewalls, a reflective vest and the mudguard stripe exactly how probable is a SMIDSY?

Some sort of blue large Nissan thing, speeding up to sit on my wheel going towards the bottom of Abbey Lane then audibly preparing to steam past over the speed bumps outside the school, temporarily thwarted by there being a car in front of me to pass too, though as soon as that signalled to pull in to the left the blue thing steamed past, continuing its vitally important mission by pulling out just in front of a cement mixer under the overbridge.

  12. Overtaken just before the mini roundabout at the eastern end of Holyrood Park (heading west). I was in strong, very strong, primary to: a. keep out of the door zone; b. avoid the truly terrible road surface on the left; c. to prepare to turn right at the roundabout.

Mondeo I think (will check the vid) just had to get by before the central reservation before the roundabout. Utterly pointless.

Not long after a Honda soft-roader overtook me after waiting behind very very well, and gave me LOADS of room. Not fast either, definitely not over 30, though he almost took off over one of the massive speed bumps (proper full width thing).

Earlier than that, near my house, some moron swerved left juuuuust after overtaking me, so he could straddle a speed cushion (I was strong primary again having not long gone past a parked car, more ahead, and avoiding going over the speed cushion, or having to go on the left side then immediately move back right to go past the parked car ahead.

It was a strange Yin and Yang commute.

Just a heads up - it's that time of year again, when tourists with dodgy sat navs end up driving down Princes Street.

And you thought the taxis were bad!

Reminds me the other day I was coming out of MMW to go into the Argyle Place cycle junction and found a car full of tourists coming the other way trying to use it to do a U-turn on Melville Drive!

This west Calder excellent shop has flipped the van trend tho. They have parked in the double yellow outside the bike lane. Most vans I see park in the single yellow which is usually out with the bike lane. Not mounting a defence, just saying that instead of going in the bike lane where they would not be fined they have gone for double yellow outside the bike lane? If my eyesight is not failing

Nearly got run off the road this morning going down Colinton Road ~ 20mph. A car slowly overtook, then veered suddenly left in order to squeeze past a car which had just stopped to turn right. If I hadn't had a crystal ball moment and slammed on the anchors I'd have become a 20mph human bowling ball on the pavement, which was full of schoolkids.
At the Grays Loan traffic lights I asked him with as much calm as I could muster if he could consider looking where he going next time he performed a sudden change of direction. A simple glance out of his side window would have sufficed. To be fair he was very apologetic.

I had a similar crystal ball moment this morning to you, @Snowy. Heading east along Main St, Davidson's Mains, I'm coming up the pedestrian crossing next to Silverknowes Road South. A man running on the pavement is just ahead, and there's two cars, sitting opposite each other, one wanting out of Silverknowes Road South and the other wanting out of the cul-de-sac bit of Silverknowes Road. My spidey-sense was tingling at this, and rightly so, as the car on my right proceeded to turn right at the worst possible moment, going to t-bone me. Cue (a) hard on the brakes causing back wheel to lock and skid, and (b) me shouting "Oi", loudly. The runner crapped himself (sorry, whoever you are). Credit to the driver; he looked around in surprise, and immediately apologised.

A really scary one this morning. Tan coloured single decker bus, NI plate, up my ass all the way eastbound through Main St, Davidson's Mains, but I'm riding in primary because I'm going at the same speed as the cars due to a slow cyclist way up ahead. Through the small roundabout, and I pull over to the left to let the guy past. He gets his nose past me with inches to spare, then proceeds, while going about 2mph faster than me, to slowly squeeze me up against the kerb so that I end up having to hammer on the brakes to prevent myself getting squashed. Heart pounding...

Blue audi last night who decided to quickly u turn in front of me without using the mirrors or the indicators. Sent me flying and got him a dented door scraped wing and smashed door mirror. I was Ok!! got a pedal in the shin but I'm already smashed up from sundays crash so one more won't hurt..... but it does. Driver was incredibly apologetic and offered to pay for my bent mudguard .

Twat in a Rangerover screeching past me to turn right at a T junction before I did, almost smashing into the car waiting there after having to drive on the the wrong side of the road whilst going round a blind corner to do it. Then they slammed the brakes on to avoid hitting the back of the next queue but not before wrenching the steering wheel round to ensure I couldn't filter past on their left.

Hope you enjoyed the sight of me getting off and WALKING past you on the pavement. Loser.

Scariest moment for ages earlier this week. Flat road, tailwind, so I'm not going slowly. Box van passes me and indicates to turn left. Junction is still a fair distance away and he has plenty of time to get in front of me, so I've no problem with his manoeuvre. Just being prepared to have to slow down/swing out in case he finds an obstruction in the junction and stops part way.

So I'm watching the van, and not paying much attention to the car I can sense on my right shoulder, which seems to be leaving me a decent amount of room (though not if the van does stop and I need to swing out round him, but I don't expect drivers to be thinking that hard about what's happening on the road in front of them).

Imagine my surprise then when what turns out to be a red VW Polo proceeds to follow the van round the left turn.

Cue embarrassingly high-pitched "SHIII*I*I*I*I*ITTTT!!!!!" from me as I slither about on the slightly damp road, managing to miss the Polo by millimetres at most. Followed by a more controlled and deeper pitched stream of profanity suggesting that the driver might want to take a better look around in future.

Could have been very different had I been on my usual commuter steed rather than my road bike, as the brakes are way inferior and it's much less manoeuvrable. I definitely would have hit the car, the road, or more likely both. That bike was away having a wobbly rear wheel trued. There but for the grace... etc.

Frightening close pass from a taxi today. Sound turned off on the video to hide my high-pitched profanity of terror and surprise as it came by...

I was just cycling along the road and had no interactions with it before this, so it wasn't a 'punishment' pass, just thoughtlessness or inattention.

Of course it turned off immediately afterwards.

    What a pointless overtake.

Assume it never occurred to them to adjust their speed for traffic ahead - it not like it is narrow and bumpy or anything.

Gogar Station Road at it's best...

Have you thought about sharing the video with the Polis? I know of some other incidents on our infamous road that are being reported / have been reported. Not saying they would do anything in this case with the driver, but would help to show a trend of the problems on the road.

Lady in swish black jaguar who kept going through stop lines. I've taken to pointing this out.

She got so annoyed with me at the junction with causewayside that she started rolling through not just first 1st stop line, but also the advanced one.

Unfortunately for her, it was on a pedestrian phase, and they weren't too happy with her.

today it's the turn of mister angry. What is it with bad weather that brings out the half wits. Muppet overtook me 10m from the lights at Dundee st heading along Slateford. I shook my head at his impatience of passing a few metres from a red light. At which point he gets out the car and starts shouting at why I shook my head at him and if I wasn't in the middle of the road and not in the gutter where I should be. At this point the chances of rational went out the window and I started yelling back. In the end telling him to get his wee arse back in his motor. The lights changed and he drove off at low speed, a maneuver I'm sure we're all familiar with. Next set of lights I reiterated my opinion of him and pointed out the futility of driving quick in town, he got a little more irritated but stayed in his car, me and a pedestrian had a chuckle at his expense.

When I passed him for the last time at Chesser avenue he was fixated on something in his other wing mirror as I waved and went on my way.

Worst of it was I was having a pleasant evening practicing a presentation....

Yep, town was mad today. Three times on the Forrest Road northbound cycle lane a driver attempted to run into me.

The first one was dootering and of no risk, simply hung back until they worked out there was a cycle lane, second driver waited until I was alongside before moving in to the kerb, until I shouted and "made him aware of my presence".

Third time was the same idiot who decided to teach me a lesson by actually driving at me.

Police Scotland's approach less than inspiring; "it can't be threatening behaviour, or attempted assault as a car isn't a weapon, and didn't you hit him first?"

Remind me why we do this again?

    <sigh>
