That is so sad :(
Utterly pointless waste of life.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

I was a few metres behind Rosie at at the Tollcross junction - the car passed us both in the junction before cutting her off like that. Truly shocking.
Saw a cracker today.
I cycled up Abbey Lane to London Road. As I approached the top, I could see a white van waiting at the lights, which were red.
I sat in behind him.
After half a minute, he just drove through the lights. They were still red and he almost collided with a west bound car.
There was a honking of a horn... by the van driver!
The lights turned amber about 10 secs later so I went through them and turned left (towards town).
There was a lot of traffic all over the road, due to red lights at Montrose Terr and people trying to get in lanes obstructed by parked vans etc.
I picked my way forward to get a better position... and heard the van driver honk his horn - not at me, but presumably at the car in front of him (which had no place to do because the lights were still red).
I made sure I was on a very different part of the road to this guy. What a nutjob.
@ Colonies_Chri - oh you were that bloke behind me? I saw this small red car with a flashing indicator cutting straight in front of me, and then you said something. I think I swore and apologised for swearing.
Grey Renault going through the 20 zone in Holyrood Park at 35, then pulling out from Marionville Drive across three learner motorcyclists, then failing to look properly across the Duke St/Easter Road roundabout with very nearly calamitous results and finally flagrantly disregarding rule 170 turning into Cables Wynd. Invisible brake pedal on the passenger side not working.
Heading south this morning, Russell Road, just before western approach viaduct, became aware of engine reving, woman driving a red fiesta? ???? NYS decided to emulate a formula 1 chicane using myself and the viaduct pier as edge markers, I usually ride primary plus at this point to prevent such manouvres.
Once past the pier lots of brake light. Tried to have discussion at the Murieston/Dalry junction when I caught up with her, was not for participating, indicated that she had done nothing wrong!
CityLink coach, Haymarket Terrace, you can guess the rest, evasive action on my part, already a bit angry (see 'today's rubbish cycling), my normal Zen-like calm commuting state of mind shattered, yelled at driver but he was too busy not looking. </stream of consciousness>
@panyagua
Apologies if I had disturbed your Zen nes, If you wish to discuss this further suggest you PM me
@559 - no worries, my fault too... have PM'ed
Silver Vauxhall SG12 VDE, deciding to pull out of Shell Braidburn Service Station when I was about 2 *BIKE* lengths away and had to take avoiding action - they carried on oblivious.
That was despite having constant and flashing front lights on giving 600 lumens! - Clearly lack of due care and attention and shouldn't be on the road!
I cycled up Dublin St for a change and down York Place to turn right into the St James centre/bus station. Ahead was the green ahead only arrow and a red light indicating traffic turning right should wait behind the line. 4.5 cars drove forwards to the yellow hashed box and waited for a gap in the traffic coming up York Place. tut tut tut.... All on the red light.
Driving back home today after some morning chores. 20mph zone, school kicking out time. So I'm doing 20. Pug 307 hares up behind me, sitting right in my boot, grey-haired lady at the wheel, starts shaking her head as I look in the rear view mirror as I indicate left to turn into our street, and glares at me as she passes (while I fruitlessly shout 'TWENTY' through the closed window). What is it with people?
Cycling cityward through Dalmeny Main Street and little miss Focus comes out the road that leads to the station. Looked down the road behind me but didn't actually see me. Luckily I saw that she didn't see me or that I was obscured by her windscreen frame (not that I'm that thin).
Drivers do get annoyed at other drivers, who insist on sticking to "rediculous" speed limits. Its quite affirming that its not just cyclists they get annoyed at, its pretty much everyone who dares impede their speed.
edit to add, actually we can substitute "drivers" for "people". This behaviour is common in pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, etc.
I was in Glasgow this morning.
1) chap in blue estate car on his phone
2) chap in butchers van who looked at me and pulled out into my path from a side street. His vehicle was bigger than my vehicle, so I braked sharpish. I think he would have pulled out if I'd been driving a car rather than riding a bike, to be honest, but if I had been driving a car I wouldn't have been able to filter past him later :-)
@Wilmington's Cow. It's a limit. Not the speed you have to drive at. Next time do it at 15, you know, just to wind her up even more ;)
I've lost count of the number of folk who have overtook me and raced away, as I've been driving @20 through the royal park. I usualy always end up directly behind them at meadowbank terrace or Holyrood road lights!
AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Tonight's ride home was infuriating.
Car turning left on Salisbury Place to Newington Road tailing a bicycle on the corner at less than a foot's distance, which I think started getting me annoyed.
Then at the junction of East Preston Street and Dalkeith Road a cyclist went past the red lights, through the ASZ, only to stop after the pedestrian crossing lane. WHY? Why not just keep going for all that? I asked him and he didn't respond.
Immediately afterwards, at the left turn onto Holyrood Park Road as I was 3/4s through the turn, I was joined by taxi (no. 1228) which was no more than 2 feet away from me, and that was being generous to him. When the driver eventually opened the window to respond to my complaints he said "Two feet's plenty". NO - IT'S NOT YOU FAT GALOOT!!
Next, the idiot who pulled out in front of me at the roundabout going on to the Duddingston Low Road.
Last but not least, after catching up with and overtaking all the cars who had overtaken me on the Low Road through Duddingston, the woman in the monstrous black SUV who indicated left on Duddingston Road West to go into Meadowfield Gardens who decided once I was alongside her to cancel her turn and move out back towards me. She sheepishly waved "sorry" to me.
Good lord... Right - quarter past five. That's good enough. Time for a drink.
Take care on those streets fellow forumites.
Was the Scottish Hydro van who attempted to half me as he right turned into Slateford Gait. Will be returning today to get the van number to make a formal complaint.
Apparently, despite my impressive front light, having right of way, and that he looked me in the eye - I should have stopped for him.
Thankfully it was dry last night.

Yes I saw that story yesterday, appears to have been a very short sentence for what was reported
I came off the canal at Meggetland this evening, and headed up to this junction.
I indicated right in prescribed Highway Code fashion (arm fully-extended horizontally from the shoulder) and occupied the middle of the lane at the junction as I waited for traffic coming off Colinton Road to clear so I could turn right.
A green Daewoo Matiz then drew up beside me and to my left, indicating right. What were they thinking? How did they possibly think this was a sensible thing to do? Where did they think I was going to go when I turned right? Did they not consider that their road positioning was going to create conflict between us at some point very quickly after we left the junction.
I ask you...
Coming back up Market St and onto the Mound with Uberuce after tyre handover to Darkersider at Doric cafe.
On Bank St I want to turn right onto Lawnmarket. Check mirror as few car lights showing and they're going straight on south.
Just about to head out to right hand lane beside Deacon Brodies and see a fast moving shadow behind me.
Yes... it's a grey car (Alfa / Fiat maybe?) with absolutely no lights on front or back. Not as unusual as you might think of course but just shows you. Of course unlike some bikes he had lights fitted but just hadn't put them on.
Maybe Uberuce saw him later? Hope he did anyway...(!)
Today's scariest driver : I was slowly climbing up hill on Ardmillan Terrace and crawled through the green light (I'm having a week of weak legs, but I'm usually must faster - I Swear!) going straight across the junction at about 3.30pm, which then promptly turn amber 3/4 through the junction.
The black jeep wanting to turn right onto Angle Pk Terrace, knows it's not going to get across this time, so just drives straight towards me fully on the wrong side of the road and slams on the brakes when they realise that I'm about to go through their windscreen, resulting in a swerve around me and through a very red light.
Idiot. Genuinely thought I was going to be jam over the road.
@LaidBack: yep, saw that dark shape during a shoulder check too, then double-taked until it really sunk in that I was seeing a completely unlit car.
He did put his lights on shortly after this.
Earlier in the day, I heard the rumble of a large diesel behind me as I approached the blind corner at Balcarres Street heading to the clock, so picked up a bit of speed to clear the mid-repair car that is almost always doubled parked outside Stuart Norman Auto Services. That evidently wasn't speedy enough, so the large diesel(which had by now been ID'd as an HGV, not a 38 bus) just overtook me. On a blind bend which has tot all room to take evasive action.
My Strava trace shows me braking sharply, not because I thought I was going to be hit(it was a full lane overtake, which in other circumstances would be good) but because I wanted the driver to pull back over ASAP.
Followed a similarly unlit car for a while earlier in the week. I don't understand how anyone can drive without lights for longer than 20 seconds - surely by that point one should realise all the instruments are invisible...
Ta for tyres/pleasant evening Laidback/Uberuce. Probably my round next time!
@ Darkerside
You would think so, wouldn't you? Just goes to show how little attention many drivers pay to what they are doing. It's probably not until they decide to change radio channels that they notice! (Though with controls increasingly built into the steering wheel, even that is less likely nowadays).
More selfish parking at Craigleith Sainsbury's. First, as I'm unlocking my bike, a large 4x4 stops on the bus waiting area (which is clearly marked in words and with diagonal yellow lines), and out almost tumbles a veiled woman who nearly caught her leg in her shoulder bag strap. The husband then just sits there as she wanders inside (no "excuses" then of a physically-challenged shopper).
Moments later a black pickup truck belonging to Jacksons Plumbing & Heating stops behind it and the driver also wanders into the store.
As the bus waiting area is also where the cycle parking is, they are now blocking the view back onto the car park road. Rather than go between them, I went to the front of the 4x4 and shook my head at the driver, who could hardly have cared less. Then I noticed the small child strapped into the rear seat. So much for parental experience telling them that blocking parents and children's view when leaving the store by bike was stupid and dangerous. I sarcastically shouted to ask him where his bus driver's licence was. Queue another dumb expression along with apathy.
Sainsbury's need to do something about policing that area. All it takes is for their trolley shifters to ask the drivers to use the car park 3 metres away. But as I was discussing with one of the #13 drivers, they (Sainsbury's) don't seem interested in doing anything about it.
The woman who was turning off 'Boundary Road North' on to the incorrect lane of Gait 3 upon which I was waiting and giving way to her at Heriot-Watt Uni. Luckily she spotted me before driving into me and steered around me using the correct lane whilst holding up a hand to apologise. I put my hand up to say 'what the hell were you doing' in reply.
