Impatient person sounding their horn at me for taking the lane down Lanark Road in the dark and wet (just about at the spot Andrew McNicholl was killed, yes I do give the parked cars down there a very wide berth).

They ended up at the back of a nice big queue of traffic waiting at the lights while I went down the bus lane. Oh I did feel smug.

Last night I saw two separate Pizza Hut delivery mopeds do unindicated U turns - one on Lauriston Place, the second on Fountainbridge which came terribly close to splatting a cyclist who was lit up like a Christmas tree.

And one of them parked diagonally in the ASL outside the transfusion center, which was a tad annoying, though all too common

L plates on them? I don't see how any commercial vehicle (for that's what they are in my mind) can have a learner driver (or rider) on them. Or maybe that's no longer permitted? I tend to stay well clear of pizza bikes for the reasons you give.

@Focus - the one on Lauriston Place certainly had L plates, but I'm not sure about the Fountainbridge one - I was about to turn down through Springside, so I was checking the traffic around me.

  6. The Clancy Docwra driver this morning. Had his wagon PARKED right at the Ped/cycle crossing at Forkenford (innocent railway)

Pulled away right at the moment I started making my right turn from Duddingston Road West onto the Innocent Path. If that wasn't bad enough he slammed his brake on in response to my uncomplimentary shout. Very close to being under him. Barsteward.

The woman in a silver Jeep coming out of Asda Chesser car park. Not on my bike, but pushing my 11 month old and 1 week old girls ( I know, slow down Dunny you dog) across the zebra crossing, she was totally oblivious to our being there because she got a very important text message, and I had to pull the buggy back FAST to avoid her hitting them.

Shortly after that, her wing mirror, amazingly, seemed to come flying off...

This happened on monday but I only just got around to posting the picture online.

I've tweeted it to Eddie Stobart Group twitter account and awaiting a reply at the moment.

Eddie Stobart lorry was following me all the way along from nicholson street through the meadows. Was clearly driving in a fairly distracted manner and I was getting quite nervous. He arrived at the below lights on lothain road:
    https://twitter.com/AlexDRobertson/status/398783890027847681/photo/1
WELL after they'd turned red and proceeded just to drift forward about 10 metres. I snapped this photo
    http://pic.twitter.com/2CWv7IAc26

The guy was reading something on his lap and was clearly VERY distracted. He then continued to drive down towards the western approach and was NOT driving like he was aware of anything. Bad times.

@ARobComp Stobarts have acquired a good name for ensuring their drivers behave themselves. I would hope that they'll be having a word with the driver and will also let you know about it.

I passed a driver who was very absorbed looking at his phone in his lap, while his car was going 5-10mph. I kept pace with him and he looked up at me. I gave him a phone sign and a shake of the head, and he responded by waving what turned out to be a sav nav at me, as if that made it all ok.

Loads on the way home tonight but I can mention them all.

However, on the 20mph section of road through Holyrood Park 4 cars overtook me while I was doing 20mph. It's not just a nicety when it's dark and when there loads of peds. The zebra crossing is a dangerous place for pedestrians - it's difficult to see them in the dark. If I hadn't have stopped I don't think any of the cars would have.

On the way back up Dalkeith Road, a car going the opposite thought it would be fine to cross the road and park direcly in front of me - that was a near one.

In general I am finding more vehicles too impatient to wait for me to pass and feel as though they must cross my bows. Those that do wait are often revving ready to cross right behind. This is really scary and I can understand why folk feel that it's unsafe out there. It happens several times pretty much every ride in town.

I'm sorry to say this evening it was me. I was parking the van on Marchmont Road, and while parallel parking a cyclist flew past me that I simply hadn't seen and scared the bejesus out of me - luckily he swerved past successfully enough. He had no lights on and it was dark, but it's pretty scary to think that as I am primarily a cyclist I go out of my way to check first for cyclists - and yet I didn't see him. Of course it is tricky there too as you have to sit in the cycle lane in order to wait to parallel park.... still rubbish driving be me.

Doesn't sound like bad driving from you algo. More like one for the "bad cycling" thread. No sympathy for anyone that gets hurt riding in the dark with no lights. Pure idiocy.

thanks a lot Bhachgen - it's true the cyclist is an idiot, but I am still kicking myself as I probably wasn't checking the off-side mirror often enough while looking to get nearside rear wheel where I wanted it. The problem is I *might* have seen him if I'd look in the offside mirror more often, but when I started the manoeuvre I saw nothing behind me as he was essentially invisible....lesson leaned at least - keep checking offside mirror more often.

There must be idiot sauce in the drinking water today. After upgrading my lights (so I know I can be seen) I've suffered several eejits.

Going to work I was almost run down on one of the roundabouts on george street by someone who blasted through at ~30mph without pausing to stop. Very close to front wheel and resulted in lots of swearing.

Coming back the same thing happened on the roundabout at oxgangs tescos. This time the woman skidded to a stop right in front of me. She had the look of, at best, mild annoyance at almost connecting with me.

I think I might invest in a helmet camera in case something happens

Had a lovely ride in this morning, took in a loop of Arthur's Seat and caught the sunrise. Came down and up Holyrood rd, and was following a filtec water services truck towards Cowgate. It took a left turn up Pleasance without indicating, and lost a bit of traction, wheel spinning and spraying me with mud & gravel. Not so lovely. Company duly emailed (about the lethal un-signalled turn, not the free mud shower.

I was cycling east through the Grassmarket last night 1945.

Car overtook me on the zig-zags at the Pedestrian Crossing and turned left up Victoria Street missing me by about a metre.

At least the indicator was on!

On Ferry Road this morning, I'm cycling at 19mph (according to the Edge) and am passed by a van closer than anything I can recall this year:

He didn't get far. 20 seconds later I went past him as there was a huge queue towards the Red Bridge.

had to slam on the brakes at the junction by the statue of Wellington after a taxi does a u-turn from one side of Leith Street to the other, the lights were green for me.

Annoyingly close tailgating from a chap in a blue van going through some roadworks. I was tempted to go really, really slowly but resisted. Driver shot past with minimal clearance the moment he had space to do so. I must have delayed him by all of 30 seconds. Bully.

mkns: I'd send that image to the website you can see on the side of the van. That's shocking driving.

mkns - under my dictatorial regime, such driving will be treated as attempted murder.

This spot is the point on my commute where I am most often passed too close - the bit where the left lane (westbound) splits in 2 for the left turn to B&Q/Tesco Home but I'm maintaining a strong primary into the new middle lane to carry straight on along Newcraighall Road.
    Google Streetview Link
Today's was the closest yet - not comfortable at all.

Firedog / Min - the overtake sort of started out ok. I mean, I think he was still too close, but at first I wasn't unduly worried. But it was one of those overtakes which happened both in slow motion (because he was doing about 2mph more than me), and where the driver clearly forgot I was there or didn't realise I was going as fast as I was, and essentially "closed the door" on me (there's probably a better phrase). Here's the slightly boring footage:

By the time the back of his van was almost nudging me over, granted, I was getting a little concerned, because I think I could touch his van with my hand without lifting my hand from my handlebars.

I'm on the fence about whether it's bad enough to mention to the company, tbh. Maybe the video shows it to be less scary than the picture? Difficult for me to judge, since it was me on the bike. What do you reckon?

@douglaswaring - I have a similar issue with a similar roundabout at PC World in Corstorphine while travelling west, where I also attempt to retain strong primary in the middle lane. Can get hairy. I have empathy.

It was most concerning when the wing mirror passed by underneath my handlebar!

@mkns Isn't there a place to report problems with Haymarket ;)

At the risk of sounding rude (not my intention), you are making excuses for the driver. Never do that - it's up to the driver to come up with a reasonable excuse, not you as the one endangered. Equally, don't feel bullied or obliged to report it if you'd rather not. It's your decision and yours alone.

Would I want to report it? Yes. Would I report it? It depends how I felt when I got home and had time to think about it.

  30. DirtMaster.co.uk transit pulled up behind me at a red light tonight. I was waiting on Roseburn Street to turn right onto Roseburn Terrace/Wester Coates/A8

As i cycled off, the twat pulled out on my inside (the lane to turn left) but accelerated past me turning RIGHT forcing me to brake heavily to avoid smacking into him or turning into the lane for oncoming traffic! Probably the most dangerous driving I have encountered whilst on my bike. Very dangerous, very aggresive and very illegal.
