A blatant RLJ at the bottom of West Preston Street, one full second after a cyclist RLJed who was already one second beyond red.

The 4x4 driver driving down North Gyle Road tonight, so engrossed in his phone I was able to cycle right up to his drivers window, and knock. Hope the phone broke when you dropped it ! Good impression of startled rabbit.

You know those cyclists who run red lights because it "doesn't do any harm", and the annoying ones who ride through the green man on pelican crossings? Here's one I came across while on my way home after this morning's PY session: they had obviously forgotten they weren't on their bike...

Something I've never seen the likes of before...

A massive Landrover comes down Argyle Place towards Melville Drive, takes the right hand side of the traffic island as if to turn right. But then stops, changes his mind and carefully manoeuvres through the bike lane inside the traffic island to come out on the left of the island, and then turns left onto Melville Drive.

Probably the most off-road driving the vehicle has ever experienced <shakes head>

Shame I didn't have my camera on, otherwise I would have got the John Lewis articulated HGV accelerating up to and through the red light outside the Kings this morning. Myself and the cylist opposite waiting to turn out of Gilmour Place shared equally incredulous expressions as we passed eachother.

The white van that, in the process of exiting the Clovenstone roundabout this morning, nearly took out the cyclist in front of me. Didn't have the wherewithall to note the name of the van or the reg.

I was out and about more than usual in Fountainbridge/Dalry this morning. Every signalled intersection I came to a commercial vehicle accelerated on amber to push through the light. Mostly vans, but also one Lothian bus.

Anyone had any close encounters with a liveried black car with the details of Clan Gordon estate agents emblazoned all over it?

Two days in a row at the Haymarket junction, same place, same time at about 8.45am, this car has taken fast, scary, dangerous overtakes.

Yesterday he screamed past me at the Mercat Bar, only to be stopped at the already red lights and me to sit in front of him in the ASZ. Of course, desperate to get in front he took another dangerous overtake once the lights hit green, and almost took out the cyclist in front of me; he passed SO quickly and then tried to overtake the guy in front in one fell swoop in order to take the left onto Palmerston Place. He realised the error at the last minute, hit the brakes and had to wait for the cyclist to pass before he could take the left. Otherwise the poor cyclist would have been all over his bonnet.

This morning the same car whizzed past me at the same place and took the exit on Coates Crescent, all the while beeping at another cyclist in front of him for no reason!

Anyone else seen this culprit? Thought about emailing the company, but checked out the website and looks to be "family owned" by two brothers - one of which I suspect was driving the car. So I figured what's the point. The driver is clearly bonkers and an email will do nothing but hack him off even more.

Close pass that I reported to the Police 2 weeks ago has finally been resolved. Car is registered to a company, and they are unable to ask the company who was driving without a criminal case being initiated. I thought dangerous driving was a criminal offence, but ho-hum. The effort to actually report this, and the time it took to follow up makes me wonder if they were hoping I'd just drop it...

    That doesn't sound 'right'!!??

No it really doesn't. I'd like them to at least inform the company about the complaint with the car reg & time. The PC dealing with it is one of the bike polis seen round town.

...was... pretty much all of them, today!

I drove in both rush hours today, as opposed to what I normally do, which is cycle *outside* the rush hours.

Jeez! Tonight, anyway, red lights were simply an advisory that the fifth or sixth vehicle should consider not traversing the junction!
Pretty much every set of lights had at least three, sometimes five or six cars go through on red.

This was all the way along Ferry Road at around half five.
    Astonishing.

Firstcall small white van at 07:15 yesterday. I was turning the corner that links Corstorphine High Street and Saughton Road North; he was speeding down Kirk Loan towards the junction. The road ahead and behind me was clear, so I was keeping an eye on him to make sure he had seen me as cars often speed through that junction if there's no traffic about. About 20 yards short of the junction he slowed a little, so I assumed he had seen me; after all he had a clear view. But whether he had or not, he arrived at the junction just as I was passing and didn't stop. I had to swerve wildly on what was a slippery surface to avoid going over his bonnet. I shouted out as I swerved, but he had that fixed 'look ahead' gaze about him; utterly ignoring me.

I had 3 annoying sods on Clermiston Drive tonight. Why some people don't have manners and give way when the obstruction is their side of the road is beyond me.

@twq as chdot says, doesn't sound right, but maybe all you need to do is stick to your guns and say "that's fine, I'd like to press charges against whomever was driving the vehicle". It would then probably be up to the fiscal...but as several people said before, if the same vehicle keeps coming up, action is perhaps more likely...

Thanks @Snowy. I'm not going to take this any further, but if anyone sees a silver Audi RJ10 UKB, keep your distance & report any bad driving!

Sorry to have to revive this thread after a few days of rest but I had a bad one today.
Heading north on Braid road I was passed by a transit style van. Downhill with the wind behind I was matching his speed by the time he was fully in front so I adopted a good primary position behind him. Just as I was thinking to myself that I should probably leave more than about 2 car lengths gap (we were doing about 25 mph)a people carrier taxi drew up alongside attempting to pass me. Of course with the white van just a few metres in front of me there was no where for the taxi to go. But instead of recognising he'd made a mistake and pulling in behind me he just sat there while we exchanged looks of incredulity. After about 100m of this we approached a pinch point between parked cars and a crossing island, so he just moved across the lane into me. Fortunately I'd anticipated his course of acton and managed to pull in behind the parked car and do an emergency stop, which I very nearly completed before nudging into the back of the car (no damage done).
To give you an idea of our relative speed, after a few deep breaths I continued on my way down the hill, following the taxi's route along Hermitage Drive and down Braid Avenue. By the time we crossed Cluny Avenue I was right behind him and followed him all the way into The Royal Blind School off Cannan Lane. He had passengers on board so I didn't want to cause a scene so I just took a picture of the registration plates and moved on.
Registration SF09 MXO, Dumfries and Galloway registered taxi number 182 (I think), Peugeot "Expert".
I'll be writing to D&G taxi licensing.

Stupid 4x4 driver (W254 AGJ) pulled out and nearly sideswiped me coming out Canaan Lane and he had to perform an emergency stop when I shouted OI! at him when he came out. Then has the audacity to beep at me then give me a mouthful for shouting when we get stopped at the pedestrian crossing a bit further up. Upon hearing this I'll admit I was not restrained in my response, his excuse was "He didn't see me, and stopped when I shouted." I was in primary for visibility, hi viz jacket and flashing lights on the helmet and handlebars.

After a couple of such incidents recently, I'm beginning to wonder if nearly getting killed when just trying to get into work is worth it.

    Not passengers, witnesses.

A guy in a black hatchback decided to overtake me as I was cycling along Boundary Road North at Heriot-Watt Uni this morning and then immediately started indicating to turn left... I was about to turn left too as it happens, but I hadn't yet indicated my intention, and even had I done so it still wouldn't make it ok to overtake around me on the corner. Luckily, he realised the error of his ways before actually turning in front of me so I glared and held up my hand as I undertook and then turned left.

Potentially. Although without wanting to make an offensive generalisation, he was dropping someone off at the Royal Blind School.

Worst overtake I've ever experienced has still left me shaken a day later. On Russell Road about to go under the bridge on way to Roseburn. Cars parked so cycling along quite the thing just outside the door zone. Red estate car overtakes me without crossing the white line in middle of road with blind corner ahead. It was literally about two inches from my handlebars. Bump in the road or slight wobble from car or me and I would have been under the wheels and a goner. It was insane.

Didn't manage to catch up to plate - would have reported otherwise. Starting to think I might have to invest in a helmet cam.

    @Claire

I use a helmetcam and watching back the footage just gets me angry again, though if there is a particularly bad incident then it's handy for reporting and/or seeing if you could have done anything differently to avoid it.

I also have to find a way of beeping out my language when people try to kill me, I tend to get a bit sweary.

@condor2378 Do you think it was a good investment? The price of cams leaves me in a bit of a cold sweat, but saying that I'd rather have some video evidence if (when) anything like that overpass happened (happens) again.

The swear words just fall out of my mouth. Very loudly. Who knew a girl in pink high viz could swear like a sailor? :)

If I have to ride without my camera it makes me a bit nervous now. It's like a big safety blanket.

I think that's a bit irrational, as I don't think it modifies driver behaviour in advance, but that's how I feel.

Nothing ever happens unless I forget to charge it up, when there's inevitably a car chase / triad cleaver war on the way home...

I gave up using mine since nothing ever, ever happens on my commutes. I should probably sell it. It's a Contour GPS with two batteries and I think a 16GB card. Rarely used, one careful owner. God knows where all the mounts are though.

Nothing much ever happens on my commute either, but when it does I have a record, and that's important to me. Companies I've commented to on the basis of video evidence have always been quick to respond: there's much less room for debate when it's in 1080p on YouTube...

Also it means I don't need to get into confrontations with drivers. I don't think it's worth the risk banging on a car or shouting at the driver: it's likely to provoke road rage and that can be risky. I save my response until I'm out of harm's way.

Driver doesn't see me as she pulls out of Durham Sq into my path as I cycle up Durham Rd. Maybe it's the baby in the back seat distracting her as she fumbles with her mobile phone to wave her apologies....
