@condor2378 I've only just seen this. Gave me the heebie-jeebies - can't quite believe someone would pass that close. I pull a trailer too with little people in, so I can share you feelings of pure ire. Good luck pressing for charges to be brought - I hope you get some success. I'll be looking out for that car....

Last night, around 9pm, making good speed along Craigcrook Road at Ravelston Park and, for the second time in as many months, some idiot speeds past on the wrong side of the crossing island, only to turn up Strachan Road and pull in to park 20 seconds later.

The first instance was similar, with that driver pulling into a driveway lower down the hill. What is it with some people who live up there?

That's about 4 times some idiot's gone the wrong side of that island from memory.

This morning's utterly pointless impatient spuntery was from the unseen driver of a wee black car, who beeped me on Bruntsfield Place somewhere around Forbes Road (didn't initially think it was for me, as I was no more in anyone's way than the car ten feet in front of me) then revvingly overtook around Bruntsfield Terrace (but not in order to turn right down it), ending up behind the car in front of me just in time for me to move over to the left to take the bus lane past the solid line of stationery traffic all the way to Gilmore Place.

    "beeped me on Bruntsfield Place"

Horns make some people feel big.

    Sad.

Perhaps they should be wired to give the horner an electric shock as a motivator to ensure they only use them when they really, really need them?

The lady van driver at around half six last night at the King's Theatre junction, who decided to follow the first couple of cars that had already jumped the red lights as they approached from Home Street (but then went straight ahead) and turned right towards Gilmore Place... By the time she reached the middle of the junction I had also reached the middle of the junction after setting off from the ASZ at the end of Gilmore Place on the green light. I came to an abrupt halt in the middle of the junction, stared at her angrily and held my arms up in despair. She then had to drive all the way around me to then continue onto Gilmore Place.

Shortly afterwards I found myself following a slow white van down Valleyfield Street. It put its hazard light on and came to a halt in the middle of the road. Asssuming that it was about to reverse into a parking space I initially held back since there is barely any space to pass a vehicle on either side of that road in any case. The driver then got out of the van to open the back door while a pedestrian who had crossed the street behind the van then got in the passenger side. By this point I was fed up of waiting so just squeezed down the passenger side, avoiding the wide open door...

BMW Saloon going west along Shandwick Place (Tram,Bus etc only) last night 2300.

Not really that bad you think!

Turned right from Stafford street which is one way in the opposite direction.

Whoever it was that knocked the eastbound motorcyclist off @ Fountainbridge/Dundee St this morning 8:20am.

I presume he didn't fall off all by himself. Hope he's OK.

It was outside the entrance to Fountainpark, I know that junction is really bad for right-hooks when you're travelling eastbound along Dundee St. I think the road layout encourages fast right turns (from westbound) into Fountainpark. Bad.

The ned who decided it was a good idea to pass me when I was slowing and indicating a right turn off Duddingston Low Road onto the Innocent Path, whilst there were cars approaching in the other direction. Two reasons he should have waited 5 seconds.

I wave my hand in disgust and he stops in front of me to shout that he believes I'm from Mongolia (though we all know what that insult really refers to). As I turned down the path I suggested he get a brain and learn how to use it before suggesting he procreate with himself. That wasn't big and it wasn't particularly clever but it was no less than he deserved. I was on the way to visit my mother in hospital so the last thing I needed was to be going there in an ambulance (if I was "lucky").

Earlier, the #41 bus driver who decided to drive over the ASL at Hope Park Crescent, not stopping until his front wheel was on the line. Seems Lothian's drivers are definitely slipping after showing signs of improvement since cycle awareness training began.

Yesterday's actually...was the post office van swerving up Dalry Place yesterday evening at abou 6pm - even though he had plenty of room to his left, he gave me no room, so I had to swerve left, catching my pannier on the poles sticking up near the seats.

When I got home I found that the rather nice bottle of Bordeaux I had been given for mulling the wine and warming the pies at the office party had shattered, saturating 23 pounds worth of Xmas cards, and the box containing my Brother's Tardis mug I'm giving him as a present.

Equally unfortunate was that my helmet cam battery had given out as I recorded the party for posterity. Hey-ho.

I'm quite used to impatient chumps overtaking on the left from the eastbound lights going past Newhaven Asda on Lindsay Road (where I take the right lane seeing as the left is always filled with cars), but yesterday a taxi tried it when another taxi wanted to swerve east out of Annfield to park in the bus stop. Couldn't tell which one did the beeping.

It was a distinctly edgy commute this morning:

    1) I decided to go on the Gilmerton Road cyclepath this morning. So on the Dobbies roundabout I signalled and turned right to go into the false entrance and then onto the path. However a red audi coming south from Gilmerton didn't bother to look for my extra bright front light or my reflectives and just came onto the roundabout as if I wasn't there. It was going at some speed but fortunately I picked up the "body language" of the car and braked in anticipation. Very nearly a t-bone.

    2) Going up Minto Street in the bus lane near the West Mayfield junction, a small white van (with Walker, Unipart etc plastered all over) decided my space on the road was his as he wanted to turn left. If I hadn't of braked again, I would have been hit.

All very upsetting - mostly because my faith in humanity is diminishing in discrete jumps every day.

Not rubbish driving as such, but I've noticed a lot of Royal Mail deliveries being made out of either white vans with temporary stickers on them or hire vans. I assume this is to cope with seasonal increase, which may also mean being driven by seasonal workes, who may or may not fall below the usual "standards" exhibited on the road by RM drivers.

So be extra wary of white vans and hire vans which may or may not be parked all over the place on pavements or double reds and yellows as they see convenient.

I suppose all this makes it even less likely that RM have any idea who is driving their vehicle at any given time.

  14. Driver of a Nissan Pathfinder SUV rolled straight into an ASL this morning, sitting right of a cyclist who was already there. Lights turn, other cyclist and I get away quicker, cue overtake with lights ahead red (in fairness, space was given, but a little pointless) but rolls straight into the ASL at those lights.

So I pull alongside (noting there's an indicator on to go left so I can go on the right to go straight ahead) I indicate the width of the ASL and the window comes down. Calm conversation where I simply point out to the lady driving that this is an area for cyclists, and it's the second one she has pulled into. She says, "Sorry, I didn't realise." I point out again that it was twice and she should really stay out of them.

I'd forgotten the key point that was fortuitously taken up by ARobComp who pulled alongside and pointed out that it could be 3 points and a £60 fine.

Of course the argument was scuppered somewhat by 30 seconds later a cyclist beside us in the ASL running the red when the green man came on. We both declared exasperation.

It's £100 fine, my wife tells me (plus 3 points, as you say).

I witnessed a motorbike roll into 2 ASLs in a row last week. I attempted to explain to the owner that he was risking a fine and points, and that the area was not for him to use, to which he told me to f*** off, and sped off at high speed. I managed to not swear myself, which took some effort.

Aye, PTWs in ASLs... I do find it annoying - and their normal response if I mention it terrifying.

I want to like PTWs, but with Pizza Hut numpties and road owning road warriors, it's a bit tricky

It's ok to like PTWs but not their riders, or vice versa. Some of the people on CCE are also PTW riders, though.

I got into a row with a school run dad yesterday afternoon who'd parked his range rover so that I couldn't get from Montpelier onto Viewforth because he was blocking the cycle cut through. and on double yellows.

he was like 'who do you get so upset about every little thing'. but he was the one in the wrong. and he wasn't just blocking me. he couldn't even see if someone was trying to come from thru behind him.

I'd love a motorbike - the snag is I'd cost the NHS a small fortune in repairs, given my track record on push bikes. I used to share a flat with a biker, and had many a happy day as a pillion.

Like all road users though, a small subset are a pain in the posterior.

Of course the argument was scuppered somewhat by 30 seconds later a cyclist beside us in the ASL running the red when the green man came on. We both declared exasperation.

This point relies on an argument that is clearly a falacy.

The argument in its purest form is:- "Because some cyclists sometimes break the law, no driver has any legal or moral obligations to any cyclist"

This is neither how the law nor morality works. Please resist this falacy.

    Posted 10 years ago #
  24. Charlethepar, I think you're over-analysing.

    [EDIT: Was unnecessarily narky there]

  25. "Because some cyclists sometimes break the law, no driver has any legal or moral obligations to any cyclist"

In this situation it was more a case of, "That cyclist broke the law just seconds after we'd been telling a motorist off for breaking the law, d'oh!" Very specific situation, Ms Morrisette may call it 'ironic'.

Jogging in hi-viz, corner of Leith Links, Links Place/John's Place junction. I check for cars before crossing and here comes one speeding as usual, no indicator on the turn into John's Pl.
I compliment myself for being careful, start crossing and here comes another muppet doing the exact same thing. Almost runs me over and honks at me. While I sending him off, I notice he was doing all of this while on the mobile.
I don't think I affected his phone call, thankfully!

This morning was a bit mad. I think I need a list.
Refuse truck turned right into side street as I was turning left into it. Bad overtake too.
4x4 overtook me and immediately pulled in. I was 3-4m from the turn when he came round.
Small car did a partial overtake when I was keeping up with traffic, and started drifting into me. A hand on her window made her behave a bit more sensibly and back off.
Another 4x4 trying to overtake then undertake on East Fountainbridge, when I have to take the central line. Only to come up to a queue of traffic.

All of these were unnecessary and could have been avoided with a little bit of patience.

I think it might be somewhere in this thread, but I read an anecdote of a cyclist explaining to a car worshiping colleague the mathematically provable fact that if you catch up with a vehicle which was ahead of any impediment at the point it began impeding, then you weren't actually delayed by it.

@Uberuce I thought this was obvious, but I'm good at maths. I think the partial overtake was an example of a driver treating a cyclist as a static object, rather that something that is faster than them in traffic...

Me too, but the car driver just looked at the anecdoter as he was gibbering nonsense.
